Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What is the current situation regarding travel to Austria

@radar, how weird.

I don't recall getting a letter from the NHS ...or maybe you have to ask for ut

Remember the QR expires after 30 days so you may need to add another certificate during your trip

Reminder to self, upload new cert before I go on 3rd Sept

@Snowsartre, @esaw1, The situation is fluid all depends on what happens with the infection rates, one think to think of is if your second jab is beyond 270 days then its no longer valid for Austria.

@radar, thanks - good until mid-March; it’s really the tests required particularly for non-jabbed kids that would be really helpful info, that and any differences between Germany and Austria in terms of COVID regulations

So, this much I have learned:

The 3 of us who are vaccinated just need to upload to app.
The 2 children (13 and 9) will both have to present evidence of a private and negative covid-19 test in the 72 hours before arrival.

We all need to take a covid test in Austria 3 days before returning to England.

We all need to take a further covid test on day two after our return.

That’s 12 tests - NHS tests of which we have a cupboard full are not valid Puzzled

I have read that the tests in Austria will be far cheaper than those in UK but have not established these costs but conservative estimate might be £600 in total. Quite a premium but probably worth it (if all are negative..).

What have I missed? Or does that get us a family trip away as things stand currently?

@Snowsartre, You may not need entry tests for the kids to enter Austria itself, and if you do, it may be that antigen tests are sufficient. Difficult to say this far out though.

Tests in Austria are currently free but will become chargeable for the unvaccinated in November (to encourage vaccine take up). However, they may well remain free for kids depending on the politics of vaccinating children, especially for kids under 12. If you need to regularly get the kids tested so you can access restaurants etc. there should be a way of doing this in or near your accommodation. Talk to your hotel or resort tourist info nearer the time to figure out what the procedure is.

@Snowsartre, tests for non residents are only free in test centres, tests in the pharmacy are €25. As @Scarlet, says difficult to tell what the requirements will be this far out.
Don't think a 16 year old with a single jab counts as vaccinated here either.

Children aged 10 and under do not need a test to travel back to the UK. Does anyone know if this true for arrivals to Germany and Austria?

@Chris_n, thank you; 25 euros is still cheaper than the UK can offer. Appreciate a lot can change in two months but I think it’s worth establishing the knowns and then see if it is worth it today and then later review that decision. All on FC and flights can be moved so no real risk other than disappointment. Have not considered the implications of a positive test in country but assume that’s ten days’ expensive quarantine in Germany or Austria.

They do if they also had a positive test, but you'd need proof of that too (here, I think it appears on the pass).

@Scarlet, @Chris_n, the nhs app treats the 16 year old as fully vaccinated so they get the same QR as those with two jabs.

Of greater and possible trip-killing concern is that my reading of the below means our 12 year old will not be admitted to Germany Shocked

Entry to Germany
From 7 July, the UK is designated as a ‘high-incidence area’. You may enter Germany from the UK for any travel purpose if you are fully vaccinated. Unvaccinated children under 12 years of age are allowed to enter Germany without a negative test as long as they travel with at least one fully vaccinated parent.

Those individuals who are not fully vaccinated may only enter Germany from the UK if they are a German citizen; the spouse/partner/child under 18 of a German citizen; a resident of Germany; the spouse/partner/child under 18 of a resident of Germany; serve in an important role; or have an urgent need to travel. Further information about possible exceptions for non-residents is on the Federal Interior Ministry website, under “What constitutes an urgent need for travel”. The decision on whether to allow entry in such circumstances is at the discretion of border guards.

Travellers who are not fully vaccinated and do not meet one of the exemptions outlined above may not currently enter Germany from the UK.

Apologies for wasting thread space. -ve PCR and the 12 year old can travel and be spared the ignominy of a week at Granny’s Toofy Grin

Why on earth is it so complicated? Both posts from GOV.uk...

Testing requirements
From 1 August 2021 travellers aged 12 or over entering Germany from abroad must possess either proof of vaccination, or proof of recovery, or a negative COVID-19 test prior to arrival and present this proof on request to carriers or authorities. If you are aged 12 or over, travelling from the UK and are not fully vaccinated or recovered from COVID-19, you will need to enter Germany with either a PCR test result that is no more than 72 hours old, or a rapid antigen or other test sample that is no more than 48 hours old. The result of the test required by the German authorities can be either in paper or electronic form.

Molecular based tests (PCR tests) from the UK are accepted in Germany. Antigen tests are accepted as well, provided they meet the minimum criteria recommended by the WHO. This includes tests that meet ≥80% sensitivity and ≥97% specificity, compared to a PCR test. Most lateral flow tests work on the same basis as antigen tests and must meet the same criteria to be accepted. Details on the antigen or lateral flow test manufacturer must be given on the test certificate. ‘LAMP’ (loop-mediated isothermal amplification) tests are also now accepted. Border officials and local public health authorities will not accept a negative test result if there is justified doubt about whether the test meets the minimum performance requirements.

UK government web pages about test requirements are always more complex than EU ones, it's a British thing to over complicate and put you off travelling wink .
I read the German requirements as being OK for you as a Child travelling with an a vaccinated adult is OK. I doubt the child counts as an individual in the second paragraph. Transit is usually in the list of exceptions anyway.
Edit, sorry hadn't realised child was actually 12.

Sounds like last year already, though 5th is midweek. And maybe focussing on Heathrow. If my Dec 11th flight is cancelled I think I will switch Munich and take a 3 hour drive. I need BA Club (on Avios) for the extra luggage allowance.

@Scarlet, I have heard that the MAN flights are now only two a day rather than 3 and are also at not particularly convenient times. I guess it is going to take a while before flights return to what they were and there is pressure to reduce flying in any case.

Not sure which country's car hire you mean. We hire a car for summer holidays here in Munich (prefer nice swanky one to small one we own for local) and that has been €200 - €300 more expensive than previous years for 14 days. I checked all the consolidators etc, which made no difference. I get the impression that the hire companies have far fewer vehicles so prices are higher.

The lower categories of car hire (A through C) seem little different in price though that maybe because the £ is stronger than last time I hired and the Euro price has increased. Munich is cheaper than Innsbruck for the big name companies, Avis etc. £155 is a much better price than I can get in Munich for any size of car in February… I’ve always expected £220 or so for a B or C car and that’s just about the prices I’m getting this year.

@Scarlet, I have heard a number of rumours that the car hire companies sold off a lot of their fleet to keep going thru lockdown so that could also effect pricing I guess.

Given the increase in price of used cars** in the UK I expect many hire companies sold off some stock - or, as new cars are hard to come by due to global semi conductor shortage, they'll have limited stock anyway...

(**I have a Alfa Guilia coming to the end of the PCP period where my final payment would be ~£14k to buy. Even "webuyanycar dot com" is offering over £20k for it. Needless to say the option I won't be taking is just handing it back; I could make £6k paying the £14k and selling immediately)

Our BA flight from LGW to SZG was cancelled today. No flights to VIE either (thinking we could get the train). We've rebooked with Lufthansa to go indirect, via Frankfurt from LHR. We couldn't find anything direct at all on our booked dates.

It's saved us about £70. The flight time works out as about 2 hours more each way, but LHR is infinitely easier to get to than LGW so it's probably about the same travel time overall.

Has anyone heard why they've cancelled them all? No excuse or explanation at all in the email.

We didn't want to change our dates as we've already booked and paid for the accommodation. We were really fortunate and got the accommodation at term time prices for Christmas week via VRBO because we booked last September when things were still uncertain. The only way to amend the dates would be to cancel and rebook, and we were concerned that the price would then double with the season looking more likely now. We could have had direct flights from Sunday to Sunday but are going Tuesday to Tuesday.

BA has cancelled a load of flights to Venice from Gatwick also (and switched them to flying from LHR). Somoeone suggested that BA are looking to decrease (or even halt) their flights out of Gatwick and concentrate solely on LHR.

We couldn't even get flights from LHR to SZG on the dates we'd picked with BA. It was indirect or nothing. Lufthansa offered the best flight times and prices in the end. Maybe if we'd have been more flexible with our dates.

Going forward,we'd prefer to go from LHR, so no issues there's. Just caused a stressful 40 minutes this afternoon as we searched for new ones and the Lufthansa site was lagging at every turn.

All sorted now with Lufthansa. Mr. Owlette was on the BA website at the weekend and they were still selling our original flight from LGW to SZG, so he wants to know why they were still selling them if they knew they'd be cancelling them this week.

Two ski trips for us. And two cancelled flights (last year our flight home was cancelled on the morning of it due to bad weather in the UK). Maybe it's us?!

Why not Munich? I’m trying it for Zell am See in February. Yes a longer drive, but Munich is where all the flights landed when I did package hols to Kitz, Soll, Mayrhofen, ZaS back in the 80s so it can’t be that bad a drive… Loads of BA LHR flights, even a couple from LCY.

@buchanan101, if the traffic was still the same as it was in the 80s it wouldn't be a problem, but now there are speed limits and queues it is likely to be 3-4 hours, and from bitter experience that can increase by 1-2 hours on a bad day. A minor inconvenience if you are driving to an overnight stop, but a major problem if you have a flight to catch as you either risk it, or leave 3 hours early and spend a lot of time waiting in the airport. Maybe by train, but I wouldn't recommend it by car unless you have to be out of your accommodation at 10am and your flight is 6pm or later
