Looks like things are starting to look a bit more positive for late seaon skiing now - hiking boots may have to stay in storage a while longer. I've decided to invest in a meteorology guide so that I'm fully prepared for next season's forum.

The drought was primarily because the jet stream didn't come anywhere near mainland Europe from New Year until a week ago.
The jet stream is now roaring through central Europe and is splitting the two highs, firing through low pressure systems. It's this that has brought about the dramatic change and the weather in the Alps is expected to stay unsettled, with snow bearing weather fronts, for a while yet.

Looks like it's going to be near miss. Might possibly clip the very south west French alps.

There are low pressure systems rolling down over the Alps every 4-5 days on the synoptic charts.
The one that is there at the moment doesn't look in any real hurry to move either. No break in the cloud cover before the end of the week and possibly lots more snow at the weekend.

Noticeably cold temperatures stretching to the end of this run after brief mild period this weekend.
Snow coming into much of Alps on Thursday...
Likely to be something this weekend and options still out there around 04 March...

....I'm in La Rochelle on the west coast of France at the moment and it's blowing a gale and hammering with rain> I hope it makes it to the Alps for everyone! I work at sea and having had some meteorology training and dealing with weather predictions as part of my job, any forecast over 4 days away is very unreliable - snow next Sunday?? Maybe but predicting for the 8th of March!!! I'll keep everything crossed because I'm away for that week as well.....

Pablito, as philmes predicted, looks like it has missed the alps but has hammered the pyrenees.
looking at the sat24.com radar, there's a good chance of a large dump on the way in the next 2 or 3 days though.

18z goes for Snowmageddon (tm) for the French alps on the 27th. 70cm for Chamonix/3V/ValD - if that verified it'd be absolute pandemonium out there.

I said it earlier, the Jet Stream made a shift here in the PNW a a little over a week ago, and it's still bringing the snow here, although this weekend was bluebird at Crystal Mtn. Light flakes were sprinkling the mtn intermixed with sunshine. I'm just glad what we are getting here in the PNW is now falling on the Alps. Three storms in a row hitting the Cascades Tuesday, Wed., and Thursday. Fingers and toes crossed that I tow those bad boy triplett storms all the way across the Atlantic. Just let me please get out of Heathrow in one piece and with all my luggage!

Please excuse my n00b-ness - as mentioned before I'm not familiar with the weather patterns affecting the Alps, Australia is my specialty and the US to a lesser extent.
But given that I arrive in Chamonix for 3 weeks on Friday, at what point to I become very excited about this chart?

Chamwow, you need to hope that that the big spike on the lower chart between 27th-1st (which means snow) won't gradually shrink into the little pimple shown around the 23rd. 4 days ago the pimple was as big as the spike, and this constant down-grading is a depressing fact of life that one must get used to when watching these wigglies.

Is there an explanation somewhere on this thread of the terminology used. i.e. F1 06z 18z etc. And how to read all the squiggly lines. If so what page is it on?

red 27, but that little spike turned it a decent dump in Stuben, they cannot accurately forecast amounts of snow ...

Chamwow I think the best time to get excited is when you are strapped in, and looking down the the slopes at the results of the charts. At least that's when I get excited. Enjoy your 3 weeks.

Been snowing since lunchtime in Les Deux Alpes, nothing approaching a dump, but about an inch so far. Every little helps. Vis was terrible this afternoon as a result though.

At least 20cm at Superbagneres by 4pm and still bucketting it down. Heavy snow falling down now to 630m so tomorrow should be awesome.
