@BobinCH, looking quite warm for the next week. Sunny at times. Pack shades and pick up cold beer on arrival.

Anyway, back on topic... lots of snow was due overnight in many places and is forecast to continue through the day today. Currently snowing across Paradiski.

Light dusting of snow overnight at valley level in Gressoney, but ferocious winds. Heading to Pila for the day.

@altaski8, the long term average for 850hPa (the charts I was referring to) at this time of year is -3/-4.
More like -1/-2 further west.
|
The 850hPa pressure surface is below ground at both of those locations, so I assume it is a plot of surface temperature. And those averages seem very warm for this time of year in the mountains (e.g., 1800m). Do you know how the averages were calculated? It looks like Chamonix has an ave. daily temp of around -1.0/-1.5°C for this time of year at 1042m.

In my experience, the WRF-NMM (and its relatives) significantly overestimates QPF in mountainous terrain. In the US, a map like that is called a clown map.

Can someone do one of these fancy charts for Mayrhofen.....
Been keeping an eye on the weather on Bergfex/j2ski etc, it's changing so much in the long term - anything more than 3-4 days away changes every day.

@hinesy32, here you go for Mayrhofen
https://www.wetterzentrale.de/en/show_diagrams.php?geoid=2914&model=gfs&var=201&run=6&lid=ENS&bw=1
This site only does GFS (one of the models which is generally free to use) not ECM which many of the larger forecast sites use (it costs money to use their data, so often the various "national" weather services).
Personally I prefer maps to the graphs (they give a better overview but they do lack the detail of the graphs, I can see why many prefer the graphs), a large selection can be found here https://www.wxcharts.com/
Do note that GFS is updated 4 times a day and there can be significant changes between successive "runs"

In the end not a lot of snow in the French Northern Alps. Perhaps 12cm in the Vercors (which has been very dry), Savoie zero in the West, 7 to 10cm in the East. 10cm in the Haute-Savoie. A bit colder with the FL down around 1200 meters. On open ski runs it will freshen things up but won't make a difference elsewhere.
Storm still ongoing on and off though.

It sounds to me like you don't want realism at all. And many posters on here seem to conflate any negative comment concerning the weather with being "miserable," "gloomy," or unable to appreciate the privilege of skiing.

And that's perfectly healthy for debate. What's not helpful is when posters call other posters miserable for having a different perspective.

@altaski8, not sure I'd ever go as far as accusing someone of being miserable! That definitely would be a bit harsh.
I think we're at least in agreement that we both want the facts to be reported, even if we acknowledge that they can be presented back in different ways and with different emphasis.
Probably best to draw a line under this all now.

Yep it still looks like briefly below average from tonight, before briefly well above average over the weekend, before briefly below average again next week then turning milder.

@davidof, totally agree, but to be honest with you the response was more to do with @Whitegold, than anything else. As far as I can make out from 10 years or so of observing he does not post here on indeed anywhere else on the forum (and to be honest he’s a lot more objectionable on other threads) with any objective other than to irritate and troll. If he or she were seriously seeking to engage the tone and content of the postings would be quite different. As with a lot of these things it wouldn’t surprise me if it was some weird glove puppet. Then again maybe not. But nothing I have seen in the posts (despite them occasionally touching on quite serious issues) suggests that they are there to inform or encourage any type of sensible discussion.

Not to feed to trolls here, but interesting article about the Euro ski resorts and climate change. (Don't shoot the messenger, please!)
https://www.yahoo.com/sports/green-christmases-alpine-ski-results-ponder-future-without-153645018--ski.html
The Alps are particularly exposed to the ravaging effects of global warming.
According to the International Commission for the Protection of the Alps (CIPRA), temperatures in the mountain range have risen by nearly two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in the past 120 years -- almost double the global average, and will continue on the same upward trend.
The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research in Davos, Switzerland, warns on its website of increasingly common "green Christmases" in the Alps, with stations below an altitude of 1,300 metres most affected.
"The vast majority of stations are seeing a clear reduction in the number of days with snow-covered ground, regardless of their altitude or location," it said.
The Montclar ski station sits at 1,350 metres.
Every year the snowfall recedes to higher and higher altitudes from about 1,200m in the 1960s to around 1,500m today.

To summarise, Altaski is trying to engage noza in some kind of meteorological dick waving competition, from America.
Problem is, noza has been posting here for years and is very well respected.
In other news, whitegold has impressed everyone outside of Newcastle by skiing in a t shirt.

That's a pretty low threshold for a competition.
I was just playfully poking fun at Noza for his imprecise, non-location-specific, and not particularly accurate forecast summary. It was well deserved. I thought he was being tongue-in-cheek anyway.
