Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

More lifts open today and bright sunshine above 3100m. Lots of snow in the village and still snowing, but it is cold so wrap up warm.

Aye, it was good eh?

We missed out on the blue skies up top though - went up the telepherique and had total pea soup up there.

Stopped snowing now but they did have the cannons going on the Palafour this afternoon.

Still recovering vehicles from the road after last night caught a lot of people out!

thanks a lot, just dropped an email to TDC. 6 years ago been using ESF services myself in Tignes

And the good news is that its snowing again and the snow cannons are blowing. And after a bit of research (OK talking in a bar or two) STGM (The Lift Co) plan to open the following Tignes lifts from Saturday morning:
Tichot and Grattalu, Tufs, The Aeroski (also for download if the resort runs are not great), and the Tommeuses so quite a bit of the area is going to be open for the snowHead arrival. Still some grass poking through the lower bits of the Palafour - hopefully soon.
Weather forecast has changed a bit from the baltically cold to just flippin chilly on Sat (about -12).

Just back from a first great day in the EK. Bluebird early morning - jumped on the third aeroski bubble of the season and had a warm up down Creux. Unfortunately Tommeuses was a tad late opening (ice on seats) then back down off the side of the piste. Higher up powder a foot deep- bit of a crust lower down. Then put the first track of the season under the Mont Blanc chair - fab - so fab it had to be done again. The hordes joined me so time for bits and pieces of Familial (under the Tommeuse) trying to remember where the rocks aren't. Over grass the off piste is fine - the rest needs another foot at least (or a pair of rental skis wink . Some pesky clouds appeared from Italy so then popped back to Tignes for a Tichot Grattalu and down Merles red - more powder. Links to Le Lac (Palafour and Trolles not open) so another wizz round grattalu and dwn to the halitosis hell that is the funicular! Glacier quite busy with the lycra and chin guard fiends - some evil mogils to catch you out at the bottom of Leisses. Back down Double M and the Bus to lunch. By now the whole of the EK was covered in cloud and light flocons at the top of the Motte
Overall the open pistes have been prepared really well by Team Tignes with quite a bit of artificial and very few rocks showing. You just have to be a bit careful off the side as the gullies have not filled in yet so there are a few traps for the unwary (eg Bollin piste is split in two by a deep gulley). So if you can get a deal get out here! Bit more snow forecast through the weekend

Chocksaway. Based on your report I will see you on Sunday 9th. Just booked flights Luton-Geneva for myself, hand luggage only, at a bargain price of £85 return. I didn't need telling twice when the OH said go and at least you won't be under my feet for the next ten days. I hope she was serious!

Assuming that the Spar has not slashed prices this season, am I correct in thinking there is somewhere at Geneva airport I can pick up groceries?

The Spar does seem cheaper this year, the various Sherpa supermarkets were cheaper than the Spar last year but have not gone into one yet.

Thanks rjs. Normally shop in Bourg during season but this is just a quick break before we come out for the main season. Have the basics already in the appt so just thinking about fresh stuff. A couple of hours to kill at Geneva airport waiting for the altibus, hence the query about shopping at the airport. On further checking there is a supermarket there Very Happy

Hi back from hanging curtains! Not been in the Spar but it has changed hands and the local agent in the Alpaka says its a bit cheaper. They are just fitting out another superette in what was the Richermoz Sports shop between the Banque De Savoie and Croq Burger so a bit more competition.
The GVA supermarket is called Migros (bizarrley its owned by the Group that own Inghmas). Just follow the signs for the railway statio and keep going.
Tigski, If you are delayed then i will probably be going down the hill 10th or 11th.

kitenski, you'll get plenty of the real thing if you're out there this week - Tues and Weds both look quite full on.

The risk is the wind might shut some of the higher lifts but it should be exciting if nothing else

Coming out 14th Dec. Now very relaxed about the early season conditions. The cold will hopefully mean we have a good base this season rather then the, IMO, dangerous off-piste conditions we got in 2010-11 - where a full snow pack avalanche was always a possibility

Looking at the webcams it would seem the predicted dump has started. I hope those out this week get at least a few sunny days to enjoy what should be epic conditions. You will appreciate I am more than happy, sat at home in front of the fire, that the weather is "unsettled".

Skis in bag. Boots taken apart for an airing. Ski gear pile growing on spare bed.

^ Same! Two weeks to go now, skis in the corner of the spare room (newly-serviced), boots in bag underneath (new moulded liners in), and now it's time to get the ski stuff down from the loft Very Happy

Feeling very optimistic about the conditions now, I think we'll be more than OK.

Two weeks for me too. I got the suitcase and ski stuff out the loft yesterday. I fitted and tested my new helemt cam as well. I am glued to the web cams. All this snow is adding to the excitment. Last year I was out there in Dec in the middle of that big dump. We lost 4.5 days skiing out of 6, so hoping to get some more time on the skies instead of watching and listening for alvalache bombs from the balcony.

If only... I'm repping in Tignes with a school, so at least until the kids are asleep i have to maintain some level of decorum. Folie Douce, bearing in mind its in the wrong valley, would definitely get me off on the wrong foot. No one wants to show up late for the kareoke evening! rolling eyes

Well winter has officially arrived. The forecast for this morning was sun and from the bedcam it was looking very promising as the sun rose and lit up the peak of the Chardonnet. By the time the lifts opened it had clouded over and it was clear bad weather was expected - the Aeroski was shut and so was the 'haut glacier'. Had a wander over to see the new Fontaine Froid chair in Val. They are still testing it - this morning they were putting a large weight on a chair and then giving it a circuit - then moving it to the next - guess its going to be a while...The drop off is right by the Olympic Express so hopefully theis will spread out the traffic jam ouside the Funi. No longer any need for the magic carpet from the old FF to the Funi Exit so that has gone.
The wind above 2500m was quite strong and the snow started falling - leading to a reasonably unpleasant damp wind chill. The Tommeuses stopped a few times on the way up just for good measure. As I skied past the Tov restaurant in a virtual whiteout the loudspeakers were pumping out Lost In France by Bonnie Tyler which seemed appropriate. So knocked it on the head in favour of a bit of brico.

Meteo Ciel are forecasting about 50 cm over the next 3 days and another 20 over the weekend so fingers crossed for next week. Very Happy Very Happy

Doing it with ICE.

An interesting first day today in very variable conditions, -15 this morning apparently, so VERY cold and very windy at the top of the La Daille funicular, wind increased thru the day so you got a 'free' face scrub via ice crystals as the day progressed.

A real mix of snow, frozen man made, nice soft stuff and everything in between!! Still a few rocks and pebbles around, but it has been dumping down since about lunchtime and was still coming down strong when I walked back from the supermarket!

Cheers,

Greg

Just back from 2 days at Tignes (+1 at Val thorens) - some amazing snow conditions (though still thin in parts) and a fantastic time had by Mrs MA and me.

Saturday was Espace Killy opening day - and we had one of our most amazing ski experiences Very Happy!! We took the first lift of the day (Tufs at 08.45) to find no-one else waiting, the Aeroski not yet open....and only us at the top of Toviere Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy. Woo hoo!!
