As suggested by Samerberg Sue we drove over only as far as the Gleiming, and spent a fantastic day on Reiteralm and Hochwurzen. Found some great powder in places, but the busier runs weren't as enjoyable being a combination of soft bumps (great) interspersed with scraped sections (not so great). We didn't get as far as Planai as we didn't see the point of goin beyond the bottom of the Gipfelbahn - it just looked like flat fields. It did stop snowing a few times long enough to get in some views, but wasn't really photo-taking weather, and it's still heavily snowing now back in Altenmarkt.

Brilliant day today for us, went to dorfgastein and found they'd had about 10 cm of fresh on the newly pisted slopes, absolutely brilliant conditions. The fact that the gondola was only running to midstation was not a huge issue as ther skiing was so much fun ion the dorfgastein side we didn't care that we couldn't get over to grossarl. then as we skiied for lunch, we found that we actually could, so we spent the entire afternoon lapping the kreuzkogel chair, skiing the newly opened piste 9 and the skiroute no 11 - the latter was hard work as there were moguls, but the piste was fantastic with some lovely smoothe silky fresh powder. Absolutely brilliant. bit more forecast to come tomorrow which can only help too - we fly home tomorrow evening but should get in a reasonable day's skiing first, I hope

flangesax, Some good mileage there. You out-did us just a tad:

but we did loop the Reiteralm III t-bar a few times (fantastic conditions) and a few other drags which don't show on skiline.

Best.
New Year's Eve
EVER
20 cm of fresh on top of the hill. 10kph wind gave us thigh deep powder under the jungeralm lift. no idea what the rest of the hill was like as that place was so good we just kept lapping it. PERFECT end to the year.

nbt, Yes it was BRILLIANT today. We went drove over to Wagrain and skied to Alpendorf and back. Plenty of fresh snow, seriously deep in places. And hardly any people. Almost missed the last lifts back as the Stegbachlift was running and we spent ages lapping the blacks/ski routes at the side of that. Even the final run down back into Wagrain was a pleasure: very few icy patches at all, and being almost dark no people too!
Tomorrow is my last day hearabouts, will probably be lazy and just go to Flachau. Monday will see me on the road to France, to meet up with oski again as he's doing the Anglo-Scottish races in Les Houches - assuming it has stopped snowing by then.

cathy, Rather warm today and the snow is pretty heavy lower down, but piste preparation is superb. Skied over to Alpendorf this morning but it was very quiet.
More snow on it's way in, just a debate about whether it will be sooner or later. My gut feeling is not before Wednesday the way the temps are right now. Due to get warmer tomorrow then. Go back down to normal. Strong West wind blowing at the top of the mountains.

What an awesome week we've just had in Hinterglemm. It was raining lightly in Salzburg when we arrived on Christmas Eve, which turned to snow as we drove up the valley and by the time we got close to Saalbach it was snowing heavily, which carried on through most of the evening, and after a wonderful 9 course feast we went to bed so excited for the next morning. Which totally lived up to our dreams - fresh powder snow and blue sky for Christmas day! A few more days of sunshine, then the snow started falling again, and we had two final days of deep powder again. Leaving on Saturday morning was very difficult, it was still snowing, light and fluffy, the trees all had so much snow on them it looked like a winter wonderland and we had to go home.
One horrid thing happened - on Christmas night we got a text from some friends who have a place in Hinterglemm asking if we were ok, and to look outside down into the village. Out on our balcony we could see a massive fire, flames shooting up into the sky for hours with big fireballs going off. We felt so bad and scared for all the people down there, especially on Christmas night. Amazingly everyone got out ok, including the Dorfschmeider next door, which was evacuated in case it went up too, and all the local hotels found places for everyone. But it must have spoiled many people's holidays.
Oh, and another great occurrence - just as we were about to board our flight at Salzburg yesterday, I spotted a familiar face through the throng, and had the most enormous pleasure in running up, giving the guy a big hug and saying "excuse me, but are you Frosty the Snowman?!"

Here is a picture of the Grafenberg Lift station in Wagrain taken about 9.30 am on 31/12/11
It shows the decent snowfall but also the massive lift investment. 1x6 & 1x8 person gondolas out of this station alone. 1 of the 3 base lift stations for the town.

The toboggan run at Radstadt is the dog's doobry-whatsits, only 5 Euro during the day for the hire of a traditional sledge and up the gondola to the top of the Königslehen for a 7km run back to the bottom!

that sounds like fantastically good value.

Frosty the Snowman, Yes, it looks to be a good choice now. Sue has advised on all the speed traps to look out for, but I don't think we'll be hammering it down the Motorway.

It has dumped about 50cm of new snow here in Radstadt in the last 24 hours and the town is completely snow covered. Tomorrow the worst of the traffic will be going north towards Salzburg and Germany as the school holidays end in most European countries this weekend.
We currently have strong winds and more snow forecast. It was fantastic on the slopes today, with knee deep powder everywhere. Very misyt most of the day but it cleared later on and we had some beautiful skiing in the afternoon before the wind picked up again.
There is supposed to be snow every day for the next 3 or 4 days but with increasing sunny periods. Wednesday should be a real bluebird day and I'll be stuck in the office! But Thursday and Friday can be ski days as long as I work on Saturday and Sunday.
