Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Just come back from our long weekend in the fleet valley near gatehouse of fleet, solway coast. There was a little bit of snow on cairnsmore of fleet 750m but nothing anywhere else.'driving on the a75 looking towards the moffatt hills they looked like they received a fairly big dump, all White!!!

Yes, the daylight and sunshine revealed some nice views here & this is the view along Moffat Dale this morning. I've skied off several of those hills but there's probably only six inches of snow there just now so plenty of time (I hope). What's so exciting is that this is the second decent dump in ten days so there's snow on top of snow now, very unusual for mid November in the Southern Uplands I think.

scotia, seriously? They kept that quiet ... mind you if I'd been up I'd have used my season ticket lol.

Shimmy Alcott, depends when you intend to head up, at the moment obviously Cairngorm because it's open but once the others open it's all open to debate. Do you have a date?

Or a quid if you lived locally with the strathy special offer. Used my season ticket, first day of the season for me. It was forecast to be reasonable weather, but it sat in cloud or snowed all day. Made skiing the Lady tricky as you couldn't spot the rocks or the best route.

CML haven't had time yet to do much in the way of piste perparation away from the pisted route down the traverse 105 and Gunbarrel, so no orange mats on the funicular towers where you cut across onto the Lady or wher you head back to the M1 poma. They make a good visual queue for where your going in poor vis. One of the lifties said they haven't got many/any of the winter staff in yet so are having to make do with the summer staff. The fitters were working on the M1 poma yesterday and by the end of the day the top half of the poma bars were all on, so the M1 poma should be ready to go very soon. Track looks complete though a bit thin just in the taqkeoff area.

I've got a few piccies, but not worth posting as the quality is low due to all the mist and snow.

boabski, thanks but it's difficult to make that view look crap in a photo when the sun's shining on those hills. Very Happy

This Aqua/MODIS satellite image from 12.50 this afternoon shows the snow cover over the Southern Uplands and Highlands of Scotland quite nicely ...

MoodyFFS, yeh you can hire all the time. Some options at all hills although in my experience of Nevis, Glencoe and Glenshee the on-hill hire can be fairly sh*t if you're not there at a decent hour.

Wicked satellite image there moffatross, thanks for posting that.

I've been having problems uploading photos to the snowMediazone today, don't know if anyone else has!

Anyway, better late than never here are a couple of nice shots I grabbed off the web cams today:

Firsly a great panorama from the summit of Meall a'Bhuiridh at Glencoe:

Secondly a lovely sunny shot from Loch Morlich showing the snowy Cairngorms in their winter coat in the background and down below a more autumnal look to things:

Lastly here's a link to a fantastic photo of "A skier looking down into Coire an t'Sneachda" in the Cairngorms on the UK Climbing forum

glasgowcyclops, where did you find that? Snow-forecast reckons its only going to amount to 2cm total with a bit of drzzle

The Lecht is low so will always take a hit when things warm up a little so no surprise there, the snow was pretty thin there anyway so it's to be expected.

Yeah, Cairngorm low down has lost some but there will be some snow falling as well. Most weather models are predicting a cooling into next week and have been surprisingly consistent in that, however there's always room for the weather to wriggle out of that one so keep watching and we can't tell until closer to the time exactly how much snow might fall.

rambotion, Snow-forecast.com is simply an amalgum of the latest charts so snowfall information, certainly for Cairngorm and I'd say Scotland generally, is not particularly reliable and will change (it's now 3 rather than 2 cm), usually the snowfall amount is considerably greater than they predict just before any event and temperatures are a degree or two adrift (usually warmer). However it is IMHO a useful indicator of what the charts are predicting but do take it with a pinch of salt up until immediately prior to anything it's predicting.

milnerhome, I very much doubt it to be honest - usually it takes them a while to get round to building them and they don't appear until Jan/Feb.

Shimmy Alcott, I think there'll probably be some snow, you've still got the risks of blocked roads and stormbound mountains. If you're happy with the fallback of a bracing walk and a fireside malt instead, then go for it! wink
