Arrived yesterday in Zell Am See which has received a dusting of light snow in the town and another 20cm of powder at the top. The valley runs are being saved for the Christmas week starting this Friday and are getting hammered from the snow cannons, so there will be plenty of snow next week and it is damn cold too!

Puts my mind at ease dk100, I'm hitting Zell on the 2nd of Jan. I usually ski later in the season but a friend organised this and frankly I was bricking it!

I see Ischgl's reported depths have gone up 5/40cm today so they must have got one of the decent snow showers yesterday. Quite a bit of heavy snow around in the South Tirol area over the weekend according to some weather models so fingers crossed for some more

Looking at Saalbach as we are there over new year from 28th dec..
The snow levels are well down on last year at this point and the weather starting Christmas Eve shows the freezing line hits 2500m - above the top of the mountain!
on the plus side its all grass so not much snow required to give good coverage, we didn't book with either BA or Flyspanglobelspanners, they’ll still be selling jagermister and playing "ich bin Tony" in the goatstall...

cfc5mu0, Remember that last year (and the previous year) were both exceptional years for early snow - and indeed for pretty well the whole season.
The latest wigglies (For St Johann/Kitbuhel area) are only showing the high temperatures lasting for a day or two around 23/24 December, then falling back to seasonal average. But still with quite wide variaytion, so who knows what will actually happen.

I have skied in Zauchensee yesterday and Flachau today, the conditions were ok but the pistes in both resorts are very hard, in Zauchensee quite icy in places , Flachauwinkl seems to have fared better, we are desperate for some more snow, although the snow guns are going all day.
Queues were ok til 11o´clock in Flachau, then it just went crazy, there were almost queues of people waiting to ski down, utter madness, in my 4 years of living here I havent seen it so busy.
If anyone is looking for some off-piste, I would second what Flangesax said on another thread and head over to Zauchensee, its not perfect but its better than most at the moment.

Local Austrian papers are saying up to 80cm fresh snow expected over the weekend however Snowforecast.com doesn't agree.

DB, Well the webcams in the Schneewinkel are all showing it snowing right now
Snowforecast was showing yesterday that there wouldn't be any until Friday, although it does now show a couple of cm for today - which they appear to have already had.

From my experience (and snow forcast addiction) it seems that snow-forecast.com should be taken with a large pinch of salt. They seem to regularly show lots of snow for the 4-6 days mark, knowing good and well that forecasts that far off are highly unreliable and therefore no one can say anything when it drops down to little or nothing. Met Check seems to give pretty reliable forecast for the UK so perhaps they'll be more on the mark (dont think thy're forecasting too much snow either)
I'd tend to agree with the local Austrian papers (especially as we're heading there on Sunday!!) - local knowledge is invaluabe. Conditions there seem to be in pretty good shape anyhow. Only time will tell...I for one have my fingers firmly crossed

Almost half a metre of snow could hit the capital by this weekend, meteorologists have warned.
Christian Csekits from Vienna’s Central Agency for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) said today (Weds) there could be up to 40 centimetres of snow lying in Vienna and Graz, Austria’s two largest cities, by Sunday.
"This would be remarkable, especially for Vienna," he added.
He said up to 80 centimetres of snow could fall in the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods) area west of Vienna, in the Semmering skiing area in Lower Austria as well as in the province’s Bucklige Welt region.
Around ten centimetres of snow fell in the capital overnight and Csekits explained: "Normally such an amount of snow falls just once a year in Vienna if at all."
Meanwhile a rail worker has died trying to clear a roof from snow in Vienna.
Police said the 35-year-old fell to his death when the rook he was standing on gave way at the city’s freight train station in Brigittenau district.
Investigators said they believe parts of the roof made of plastic gave way under his weight.
There were no reported major traffic accidents or delays today although experts have put this down to there being less cars on the road because of the national holiday marking Epiphany today. |

I got back from Hinterglemm-Saalbach tuesday the falls on the 1st and 2nd left us with a few great powder days, but they were very much needed as there had be no decent snow for a week and a half before..I drove back to Innsbruck via Zell and Kitzbuhel both looked in good shape although I didn't ski them.

A few cms have just fallen in schladming, cleared to sunshine now. Some snow forecast for this evening. I think we're on the borderline here for the weekend snow, depends how far north the system comes. My thought is that to the north of schladming is the Dachstein range, hopefully anything coming from the south will get stuck at the Dachstein and dump down on Schladming. Just my rather dreamy theory.

slightly disappointing conditions here in gasteinertal. the place could do with a decent dump as even on the upper slopes some of the runs are getting pretty bare in places. couple of the locals i've spoken to reckon it's about as bad as they've seen it for this time of year.... incredible when you consider that people are skiing all over the UK ! would be interested to hear from any others in the Ski Amade region as to how their local slopes are doing.

The 80cm predicted snow turned out to be 5cm
Looks like the snow either stopped short and fell in northern Germany or fell in Italy. Hope another dump comes soon.

At long last some snowfall in Schladming! Been snowing steady since early afternoon, pumping it down now and not a breath of wind. Not sure this was forecast unlike all the snow that was forecast last weekend but didn't materialize.

Anybody in the Stubai? I'm going there on the 21st. No worries about the glacier (!) but I'm puzzled by Schlick 2000. Their own website has just been saying 5cm at the lower slopes for a while, yet the web cams and website show all pistes open, including the back to valley ones.

Just back from a fabulous day with Robboj in St Johann-Alpendorf - clear blue skies, low temperatures - never got above 0°C even in the sun! Snow in perfect condition and magnificently maintained. The piste preparation and grooming was amazing.
Skied from Alpendorf over to the Krapfenwirt on the Wagrain-Graffenburg side of town, then skied down to the Graffenburg gondola where they have renewed the whole valley station. They seemed to be testing the new Grafenburg Express gondola while we were there as the entry was closed off and on our way up we did not see any punters going up or down in the gondola cars. The new gondola is going into the base station of the fast Graffenburg Express chair.
I was delighted to see the general tidying up and renewal of lifts The double drag-lifts on the nursery slopes for example have been replaced with a very child-friendly 6 man chair. Big, thick padded automatically opening bar that even the smallest of wrigglers would have difficulty slipping through and impossible to open too early.
Snow due to arrive tonight and should last through to Monday when weak high pressure conditions come in for about 3 days. The locals didn't think it would be a big dump though.
