Can you teach / do something else in resort / region other than ski during Summer, to spread the risk?

Whitegold, Any other job I did would be at the expense of skiing. All jobs would require me to be there in the morning, so I wouldn't be able to teach at all. That's the snag, I could probably work for the lift company or hotel or something, but I don't want to give up the summer skiing! It's so nice to have a bit more time (usually), and to be up on the glacier in the summer with the views and so on. Also, since the ESF get more of the brits I hate to leave it all to them.
It was windier and chillier today than I expected and it had been warm at night, so the re-freeze was not very hard. At 08.30 or so I thought the snow was very nice on the Dome Sud, just hard but grippy. It did, of course, get soggy later on. I took 2 pix on the way down at about 13.00. First of the lower part of the Puy Salie from the resto, and the second looking down the Roche Mantel which is looking well dodgy now. However Marky B did ski down it earlier and said it was much better than it looks in the photo. I'm not at all sure that it will be open tomorrow though. Of course you need to get down Roche Mantel to access Signal, so it might be 31st July closing for those. Still, we'll see.

It was cloudier today with a bit of a breeze, but the underlying temperature was still rather too warm. Not much of a re-freeze I don't think although as we didn't start until 10.30 I can't say for sure. The snow was soft then, but when the clubs took the gates out there was some nice snow on Muretouse. Here's a pic of Dome North and Muretouse at about 12.20, and also one of the garden party last night.
Roche Mantel, Signal and Dome are all now closed - not surprising from yesterday's photo. Marky B did ski down to the bottom of Signal yesterday and said it was OK, this was to practise skinning all the way back up!

Butterfly, No - it's closed and not skiable.
jeu-d-esprit, Very cool - I take it you're all back home now?
Lovely day today, but no skiing for me, so no pix of the glacier I'm afraid.

yeremey, You should be able to rent good ones without any problem. there are several specialist snowboard shops - probably best to use them. Milou Sports near the Place de Venosc or Altelier de Snowboard. There's another one next to the marche U supermarket, but I can't remember their name and they're not on the tourist office list. Coming from as far away as Nepal it would be a pain to carry your board I would think.
Give me a bell when you get here and pop in for a cuppa.

More hot and sunny weather today - really summer now! I don't suppose it was doing the snow any favours but it was nice down here. I took a pic of the pretty weeds outside the house, and also of La Muzelle. If you compare it with earlier pix of the same mountain you'll see the snowline difference, and also the emergence of the crevasses and so on in the glacier.
going up tomorrow (yipppeee!) so I'll do my best.

Aww be kind to the pretty wild flowers , after all the definition of a "weed" surely is just any plant growing where you don't want it!
Incidentally, sad person I may be, but I wanted to see Edelweiss in the flesh as I never have done. Were we too early for it or does it not grow in your area?

Butterfly, you were too early, and it tends to grow higher up. Those are definitely weeds, and if you found them in your garden you would deffo pull them out, but they do make a good show.

I've never understood why people get excited about edelweiss - such a drab little flower.
Lovely photos, easiski. I love snow - obviously! - but mountain scenery is very gorgeous with less of it around.

yeremey, Mr L borrowed a decent board (Nitro) from Carrel Sports while his was being fixed last season but he had to ask specifically. The standard of most rental boarding stuff is frankly poor - you need to shop around and be firm about what you want.

easiski, Think your pretty weeds are Rosebay Willow Herb, we have loads in our garden, too many interesting facts to mention here. Try Googling it if you're curious as to it's medicinal properties.

paulmck, Never - that poisons horses!
Butterfly, you see - weeds - what did I tell you?
Well, the weather wasn't great today and we had a few (as in about 10) flocons of snow while preparing to leave the restaurant. The snow quality was very good throughout and although the black clouds were lowering away to the west they didn't amount to anything except a cool day. My first timer made it nearly all the way down the glacier on his own at the end of about 2.5 hours and was well chuffed with himself - so was I and his dad who hadn't skied for more than 20 years and was thrilled with the modern carving ski - could not believe it.
I took a nice piccy of the Muretouse/Dome Nord area where the snow was great (about 12.30), and then one from the resto about 13.00 or just a bit later. I'm posting a similar one I took last week so you can easily see the difference made by 5 days of hot sunshine and, more to the point, warm nights.

Butterfly, That would work fine if I had an expansion slot - but I don't! CEM gave me a link to a converter not too long ago. As soon as pennies permit I'll be getting one.
yeremey, I look forward to meeting you, although you're probably en route by now.
Yesterday was a horrid day: quite high winds from time to time (everything blew over on my balcony), and raining, however it cheered up in the evening. It's been a cooler night and feels much fresher this morning. There's a pic of the miserable weather yesterday and then one of the mist this morning. this has now nearly all gone, and it's going to be a nice day - good! I can get on with my outdoors DIY.
I've also uploaded a couple of photos of work going on on the mountain.

Rose Bay Willowherb (what a pretty name that is) is an opportunistic coloniser of disturbed ground - tends to be loads round new roads and building sites. Fortunately, round here, raspberries also seem to be opportunistic colonisers, and I'm waiting for them to be ripe to start picking and making some jam. We need some rain though - there was a storm last night with an impressive show of lightning all around the mountains but not a lot of rain.

It's cheering up a bit now with some short sunny intervals. The lifts are running and there is high wind on the glacier, but the glacier webcam hasn't been updated since yesterday, so I can't see if it's snowed or rained up there. Guess I'll have to wait till tomorrow to see. Will try to take a pic of views later today.

well it was very windy up there today, but it had snowed a little (about 2cms) which was really nice. The snow was just a nice covering on a very firm base and was actually super to ski on - except for the last bit to the resto, which was vile. So OK - windy, but sunny intervals, and with proper ski gear on not too bad at all.
Pix are: pretty view at 06.45 this morning; don't know what they're doing in the corner of the red part of the Thuit, but I guess they're trying to make the top part of that run a bit more inviting ..; snow on top of (I think) Pelvoux; and the nursery slope with some dusting on the Rateau to the right.

easiski, probably a silly question... on your 6th of august piccies it shows that the pistes are still usable but next to them is just sheets of ice.. Do skiers ever stray onto the sheets of ice? And if so.. do they ever stop? Do the lifties get furious?

Timmaah,
Easiski will know better but that slate looking ice is skiable in a fashion. It is a good test of your edges and technique.
When I was there 2 years ago, that looked worse than it skied but it is fair to say that the bottom 100mtrs of so of either side can be a true test for virtually anyone.
We skied the slate stuff because although very icy, it had less people on it and the danger can be more about how anyone else copes with it than you. If anyone loses control it can be about what you hit on the slide...rather than the loss of grip itself. You don't want to go down onto your hips or elbows though, whichever side you pick
