Skied in Ischgl today, mostly below the treeline as it’s been snowing gently on and off all day.
Today has been hero snow, perfect piste conditions and off piste looked pretty good too.
Heavier going on the home runs at the bottom but perfectly skiable. The smart money is on downloading from the lower Finba mid station though.
This afternoon it’s snowing in the town, with heavy snow forecast overnight.
The plan is See tomorrow, Ischgl in the sunshine on Thursday and Galtür on Friday.
Anyone coming out next week has nothing to worry about. Snow cover is excellent even right down to the town. The town is alternating between a dusting of white and brown but don’t let that worry you.
Shaping up to be a pretty good week overall. We both agree that Ischgl is worth the ~£500 premium over the lower Austrian resorts. No posts about looking for nearby cities to visit from around here… |
Interesting what you say about it being worth the extra.
We did Soll this year and were not overly impressed. Ischgl has already been talked about as an option for next time. Usually 6 of us, mix of intermediate + skiers and boarders. Apres is a consideration as we like a lively resort.
Presumably most would recommend Ischgl? |
A lot of the skiing here is above 2000m and you can move through the resort without going below it, without feeling that you’re missing something. Indeed some of the best runs in resort IMO are the red runs that run from upper to lower mid stations, because no one skis them, and we managed to get fresh tracks on a couple of them mid morning today. But you don’t need to ski them to get around.
There’s also Kappl, Galtur and See on the extended lift pass, which also have midstations at ~ 1800m so good snow above there.
I’d love to come here in a good snow year, because I think it would be epic, but even when other places are struggling, it seems to be reasonably snow sure here, but you do pay for it. Mind you even though it’s not cheap, the beer and food prices aren’t as crazy as the higher resorts in France.
I feel for places like Soll and Saalbach et al. I really wanted to go to Saalbach this year, and I’ve had a few good holidays in Zell am See and Kaprun, but conditions really are very mediocre there at the moment.
Fingers crossed that next year turns out to be a better snow year and we can save some money.

If I had young children I’d definitely spring for the ski depot at Idalp.
But overall I think there are better resorts for families.

Depending on what you mean by young, we found it excellent for the children used to go there in the Feb holidays from when they were about 9&11 till the first one left school.
We didn't stay in Ischgl though as Kappl was a lot cheaper and convenient with a rental car.

At least 6 inches of snow overnight at resort level and still snowing strongly.
Waiting to see which lifts are going to be open this morning.

What have the queues out of town been like? We were there last week and had 45-60 minutes queue at Silvrettabahn. Spoiled what is a really good area.

Silvrettabahn is the worst lift for queues, go through Prenner tunnel and use Pardatschgratbahn or Fimbabahn.
for busses the best pickup after a days skiing is Florianpark platz.

Agree with @Bob if there is a big que at Silvretta it's worth the wander along to Pardatschgratbahn
Silvrettabahn has the main catchment of people coming in for the day.
The top stations always seem to be a mas of people but they fan out very quickly.

Yep, been to Ischgl 8 times and think I've only taken the Silvretta up in the morning once, on Day 1 of the very first trip, like @DJL encountering a 30+ minute queue. Think every morning since has been Fimba and maybe a 5 minute queue tops.
You just have to look at a map to see why Silvretta's a bit if a bottleneck. If you're staying on the Mathon/Galtur end of town it's the first lift you get to. Likewise if you're in the open air car park/arriving on the bus down from up the valley it's the one you can easilly see so gravitate towards. And even if you're on the main road side of town on the Paznaun/Kappl end of town it can seem the obvious gondola as you just walk along Dorfstrassa. Thankfully the new covered car park directs people to the Pardatsch, taking some of the day tripper load/bus arrivals from down the valley/people who assume the newest gondola must be the best/quickest way up the hill. Being a bit 'out of the way' and "old" (in Ischgl terms) the Fimba normally has the shortest queues and while the slowest travelling gondola usually the quicket way from street to snow.

my son's favorite place to ski, just co's of the off-piste, powder, trees.
Massively under rated ski area.

@Mjit, Also, there's effectively double the capacity at Fimba compared with Silvretta as there are two lifts close together

In retrospect, doing the off piste at See in 2ft of powder/breakable crust on a pair of rental piste skis may not have been the best decision I’ve ever made.

Incidentally...we're having a St Patricks Day party in Kitzloch on Sunday if anyone fancies joining us.
Don't worry, you'll know who we are.

Last day tomorrow, so we’re heading to Galtür.
Today has been spent reaching all corners of the resort, freeze thaw conditions lower down, with good snow higher up. Snow cover remains good. Accidentally ended up doing the Duty-Free run twice, once via the red 80 and once by black 81. Black 81 was better. Definitely do it earlier in the day. Early on momentum took us all the way to the lift. Later on at lunch time poling was involved.
Due to the unintended massive repeat loop, we didn’t get to compare chicken with Alp Bella, and instead went there for lunch for a second time.
The afternoon finished with a ride up the Piz Gronda cable car. Still plenty of untracked off-piste for the brave.
Dead legs lead to us downloading when the lifts closed at 4. Apres in the Nevada.
Fingers crossed that Galtür delivers tomorrow.
Plenty of snow left for next week.

Last day, Galtür did not disappoint.
Ski the lower slopes earlier in the day, and go higher later on. Laps of the gondola next to the reservoir for the win.
All in all a good week.

Been a brilliant week in Ischgl so far.
The off piste at Val Gronda being a highlight on Tuesday.
The home run 1/1a was suffering in the sun yesterday but nearly everywhere else has loads of snow.
|

|
|
|
|
Like Monday
Snow up mountain rain in village am
Improved pm but some patches of sticky snow
Forecast looking decent for last day
|
|
|
|
|
|
Friday
Fab day sun all day
Piste in good condition above mid stations
Some mogles coming of the higher lifts this afternoon but manageable
Samnau run 80 good first thing but catches a lot of sun and gets soft very quickly
Plenty excellent skiing for anyone heading out next week.
No snow left in village other than 1 and 1a but plentiful higher up
I have been previous year's when there has been more snow in village and less on the mountain
