@mattiwilkin, That works out at 12 large beers each, at current prices - did you ski down afterwards?
@Gerbil007, Sorry we couldn't fit you in, Kev, the following week would have been fine.

Have had a few looks on YouTube for the Hinterhag and looks richt auf meinen Strasse. Looks a bit mooserwirtesque but better. The moos is a complete cliche thesedays, and probably was in fairness when I first visited in 2003. Most importantly though what type of bier do they sell? Hopefully Kaisebier

@boabski, The Hinterhag is on a much smaller scale than the Mooserwirt, which tbh, is a wee bit overwhelming at times, but it's the same kind of set up. The beer is Stiegl I think, and if it's not, it should be...

I can't believe how lucky I am, having looked at the webcams daily each morning and evening for the past few weeks and presumed that whilst the snow cannons will give me skiing, I won't get the normal feel as the mountains will be brown and green not white, however ... the last week appeared to get progressively better and when I arrived yesterday lunchtime it started snowing and I don't think has stopped since!
Warmed up with the 7k (?) piste 2B and found it not as mogully as expected towards the bottom, albeit icy and quite thin in parts. Looks like a cracking week ahead and looking forward to experiencing Fieberbrunn for the first time and spending more time over the Bernkogal side now that horribly long T bar has gone

Yep that's right tbf a fair bit was probably spilt. We did ski down. Iirc we had t shirts and jackets tied around our waist. Was a bit messy but probablyy best skiing of the week. Bergera and bobbys and finally the London pub in hinterglemm finished us off.
Just heading to söll with some friends for a few days. Will be fun but wish it was saalbach

However, I can remember many occasions when my best efforts have come to nothing - as when Honeybunny and her group stuck it for about 30 seconds before making a swift exit - the shock was just too much, but they did return a few nights later, knowing what to expect, and had probably the best apres-ski experience of their holiday. |
Mmmm it was a bit of a shock to the system - it's also difficult to find enough room when you're in a big group. I think it was actually the next night we went back, after booking a table upstairs. Absolutely brilliant! It just got better and better. I think the Hinterhag is possibly my favourite apres spot anywhere, although it's a very close tie with Cocorico in Val d'Isere and the Kitzloch in Ischgl. You'd LOVE the Kitzloch @Tatman's Tours, it's right up your alley. Quite small but an absolutely rocking party with congas through the kitchens (to Per Spoor) and DJ Boris making everyone do the actions to everything and dressing up as the ice bear for photos.
I have to admit, I'm not the greatest fan of the Burglar Alarm. Happy Hour is good and the view is absolutely stunning, but I'd rather ski straight down and get going in the Hinterhag! The atmosphere in there is just fantastic. Definitely prefer it to the Mooserwirt in St A.

Perhaps I shouldn't share this ! piste 36 to the right of sunliner is awesome, no one seems to go down it, found it last yr and went down it again today at 1030, I was the only one on it and I was in knee deep powder on the piste all the way down!

Hi - I'm off to Saalbach on Saturday and cannot wait! Do any of you Saalbach experts know of a way to order a packed lunch every day and get it delivered to your hotel in the morning before skiing? Thanks!

@dbarlon, As far as I know there is no such service or demand for it. In our days of staying in hotels, we have been known to smuggle a couple of bread rolls filled with ham and cheese out of the breakfast room. However one of the joys of the Ski Circus is the large number (around 50) of very nice mountain restaurants, selling food at reasonable prices. A gulasch soup and a bread roll for around 5 - 6 euros is a meal in itself and generally all I need, especially after a good breakfast. As a matter of interest, why do you ask, and where would you plan on eating a packed lunch? (It's a bit cold at present to be sitting outside eating a packed lunch).

@dbarlon, Welcome to snowHeads! as @Tatman suggests, I found plenty of reasonably priced restaurants when we visited the area. Goulash was popular, as was Tiroler Grostl

Just ask the hotel to make one up (some offer this anyway) or grab an extra roll/ham/cheese etc from the buffet. Some hotels don't mind you doing this either. Plan B - buy from the bakery next to Hansi's/Bobby's or from the MPreis on the village square. Both do big filled rolls for little money. Lunch on the mountain (hearty goulasch soup, chunk of bread and a drink) will set you back about €10.

Didn't know we even had one. What have I been missing? I heard the fire brigade siren going off yesterday afternoon but had no idea what was happening. At least, the fire brigade hq is just over the road.
Good link. Thanks.

Hi @Tatman - thanks for reply and great to hear about the large number of restaurants. Long story short - I was in St. Anton a couple of years ago and disliked the time spent eating lunch (and paying €4 for 500ml water). In France a couple of years ago our Chalet manager ran a side business giving us ham+cheese sandwiches, crisps and water to fuel us on the slopes for lunch - would always stop for a beer / hot drink too but food was v handy if you found a picnic table in the sun - and lunch that way was far quicker (and economical). It was also much colder!!!!
The reasonable prices and variety of restaurants sounds great. I think I'll probably do a bit of food smuggling from hotel and eating Gulasch!

Talking of incidents, there was a serious accident on Sunday morning when a piste crawler tractor with trailer taking visitors and workers from the Simal Alm (the hut at the bottom of the Limberg chairlift on the Schattberg) went off the track in bad visibility and rolled over. There were 11 injured, one of the workers being trapped under the tractor and sustaining serious head injuries. There is a ORF report in German here.

Gulasch soup league table, so far this season: 1. Hecherhuette (very meaty); 2. Hochwartalm (hot and spicy); 3. Breitfussalm (extra large); 4. Asitzbraeu (quite meaty)
@boabski, Puts me in mind of that song we hear so much, "You're sex is on fire!"

Any recommendations for butchers /deli for hot pork sandwiches that compare to the ones in mayrhofen across from the penkenbahn?? We're a group of lads self catering and let's face it, we aren't going to look after ourselves so could do with something warm and filling to grab on the way to 1st lift!

@Whitty, A few years ago there used to such a shop down an alleyway off the village street, but I'm pretty sure it's now closed. If that first lift is the Kohlmaisgipfelbahn, my recommendation would be to head straight to the Bergeralm and order "Speck mit Ei" (Bacon & Eggs). Beats Tirolergroestl any time!

@Whitty, The Alte Schmiede does two sizes of breakfast until around mid-morning: as follows:
Frühstück am Berg Breakfast on the mountain
Großes Frühstück – Large breakfast Kaffee, Tee oder Kakao, 1 Glas Orangensaft, 2 Semmeln, Wurst und Käse, Butter, Marmelade, Honig, Waldfruchtmüsli oder Sportler Nussmüsli Spiegeleier mit Schinken oder Rühreier von 2 Eiern
Coffee, tea or hot chocolate, 1 glass of orange juice, 2 rolls, ham and cheese, butter, jam, honey, fruit muesli or nut muesli, ham and eggs or scrambled eggs € 14,00
Kleines Frühstück – Small breakfast Kaffee, Tee oder Kakao, 1 Glas Orangensaft, 2 Semmeln, Wurst und Käse, Butter, Marmelade oder Honig
Coffee, tea or hot chocolate, 1 glass of orange juice, 2 rolls, ham and cheese, butter, jam or honey € 9,00
The "kleines Fruehstueck" (small breakfast) is fairly huge - I couldn't eat it all.
