Does anyone know if the 3V has never been able to open fully by Xmas week? Reason i ask is my lift pass if doe the whole area, but what would happen if only VT was open? Would I be able to get a refund on the portion I dont use?

@chrisrawles, it depends what you mean by 'open fully', it is certainly not uncommon for not all of the lifts and pistes to be open on christmas week.

I was thinking worst case where say only VT was open. I have just read that Courchevel is opening a few lifts tomorrow so I imagine things will be ok in a weeks time with the man made snow going most days

OPENING / The arrival of cold temperatures this weekend allowed us to produce artificial snow. Thanks to the hard work of the Pistes Department, we can partially open the ski area tomorrow morning, Tuesday 9th December. Four ski lifts (Verdons / Saulire/ Vizelle / Marmotte) and three ski slopes (Verdons / Saulire / Creux) will be opened. Other openings are expected this week, we will keep you posted. |

@chrisrawles, above 2400m some pistes are open, varying from polished snow with occasional patches of boilerplate ice, through to firm grippy snow or even some nice soft pistes (section below the top of Plein Sud was very nice in the middle of today). However, essentially nothing skiable below 2400m, and because so little skiable terrain is open locally the slopes are far busier than you would expect at this time of year, so the marginal conditions on piste will need regular top-ups of snow and lots of work from the resort to stay in reasonable shape.

This is what concerns me for Xmas week. I have visions of everyone one the 3V turning up to VT!

If there is no significant snow between now and Christmas it will be dire. I'll more than likely go back to the UK rather than stay out here. However, its too early to assess likely conditions for Christmas week.

It can't be any worse than what we experienced last year, my partners first time skiing and we went to Bulgaria, Borrovets. 5 runs open in the whole resort, we basically spent the whole week walking up a hill no bigger than hemel and it was packed!.

@chrisrawles, it will be better than that, unless things get even more freakishly warm so that snow cannons have to be turned off and what's fallen begins to melt. But no sign of that in the forecast.

it's not that long a drive, been taking us an hour from Les Allues
Another good day in VT, not much change from the day before but the light dusting had helped to top it up a little.
Rumour has it that the odd lift might be opening in Courchevel tomorrow.

If the weather reports are anything to go by, then this weekend should see some bigger dustings. Lets hope it correct

This time each year makes me realise why I love VT. Driving past the green fields of St. Martin, through the brown fields of Les menuires to get to the snow that starts at village level. Its as Rob says, a mixture of nice snow on piste with patches of rock hard ice. Difficult to see Les Menuires opening without a real dump before xmas.

Rejoice. Big dump this evening. Or at least a little plop.
I nearly fell over in the inch of snow that has fallen tonight on our walk back from 'les saints peres'. At least the pistes should be nice tomorrow morning. All the snow cannons are going absolutely all the time as well.

predictions more than a week ahead are of very little value, really, especially when things are as uncertain as they are at the moment. But there's more cheerful current news from all round, which is great.

Actually, i woke up to 6 inches ish of snow on the balcony at VT this morning and it's still snowing this morning. These weather types really do need to get better computers.

Both Saulire and Signal webcams looking a lot better this morning. More snow would always be welcome of course but it's getting there at least.

Well it is at least looking like a ski resort now, it's good to see the ground white at last! I notice they've turned the village level webcam back on now! Cannons are still going full clatter.
However, the prospect of significant snow this weekend has dwindled, so I think I'll leave the new planks at home and hire instead.
I can live with that.

Yes, funny that. I suspect they didn't want the images of Meribel with no snow to be used all over the place in all the 'there's no snow' reports so switched the livecam off. As soon as a bit of snow appears it's now back in operation.
It is nice to see some snow on the ground, even if it isn't very much. At least it gives some hope for more and the low temperatures mean it shouldn't all disappear too quickly.

@andy1234, @macgyver, ah, possibly my mistake - when I drove past P4 (if the map is correct) there were barriers etc down, in the past it was always a free car park with no barriers... |
Having thought about this just now, it's likely the free parking was closed because there was some cup event on in val thorens, so they probably didn't want people clogging the car park for free; that said, people just lined the roads..
