Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Thanks again Pam. I'll probably head over early, around 9:15 and go to bigger car park you mention. Then just wander over with the kids and stop off for a coffee and croissant. Any suggestion around there for refreshments at that time of morning?

Another great week, after the rain had subsided some great skiing and great company. Shame Nadenoodlee decided that Swiss bureaucracy was more fun than skiing with me, but we'll sort that at Easter!
Only Marred by a transfer company that claim to be fast and from Morzine were so late for two sets of my friends that 5 of them had to buy new airline tickets. When I say late, 2 hours late to pick them up.
Hey ho, the search for an occasional driver goes on!

Hi all

I have (hopefully) booked my family into ESF beginners lessons in Avoriaz, for the first week of the Easter holidays. Scary early start, and it looks like our best / only way to get there is via the Prodains lift, as we are staying in Morzine, on the Avoriaz side of town. Not ideal, but booking late and with limited budget we were v happy to get the deal that we got, for the s

Question is - how long should we reckon on it taking to get from the base of the Prodains lift up to the Plateau in Avoriaz? I think that there is another lift involved too, and frankly it's beginning to give me mild panic attacks. (I envisage queues, nasty slow moving disgruntled queues!)

All advice very welcome, as I don't know Morzine/Avoriaz at all.

@Chattonmill, that is appalling - were there any dire weather issues at the time of the two hour delay for picking up your friends? We have had two sets of friends arrive today, by Alpybus, and no complaints at all about their service. The first lot arrived early at GVA and then Alpybus were able to get them on an earlier bus to Les Gets; the second couple were on time and they arrived at the expected time.

Would that be the same 'speedy' company who were over an hour late for us on one of the snowy Saturday's in late December? I could understand them being late but not blatantly lying every time we rang the office e.g. "Your transfers just left Morzine" and us still standing outside our accomodation in Les Gets waiting 50 mins later.

Pity, as we've found them to be good before, and have given them another chance by booking them for an upcoming weekend break.

Will post here if we get the same treatment... Mad

@tomj, you are correct that there will be another chairlift involved after you get out at the top of the Prodains, come out and turn left and its up there. I know that the Prodains lift opens quite early, unfortunately we don't use it very often so I can't help on the opening time but I am sure it says on a website somewhere. The ski school must anticipate that their pupils have to arrive - we sometimes take the gondola up from Ardent to Lindarets and that starts at 8.45 - but you do sometimes then have to wait for the Lindarets Express to open so if the ski school is expecting people for their classes they must work that out.

We've had a great week in Chatel, getting back home on Sunday.
We stayed in a privately owned and run chalet and I feel I must "plug" them- Alpine Quests(Francis and Glen) because the whole week was just simply great. They own one chalet and manage two others.
Nice chalet and friendly hosts with transfer to and from Geneva and then daily lifts to the lift stations. Truly great week.
First two days snowy and windy but after that just sensational weather and conditions. It was my first visit to PdS and I can understand people returning year after year.
On our hosts night off we ventured to the Hotel Macchi following recommendation's on here and we were not disappointed, really nice food, wine and ambience.
Our kids- 2 family's stayed at the chalet, kids in their twenty's went to the Grizzly and enjoyed it too.
Nice mountain restaurants at Les Lindarets, the goat village and Pain Dranse.

Finally made it up to Alt.1492 Exclusif for lunch today. Bloody brilliant and the nicest service I`ve seen in this neck of the woods for a while. Prices aren`t stupid either.

This lot I fear will be a little difficult, they don't have the best reputation for complaint resolution from what I have seen.

The ticket office at Chery Nord was not open today, and won't be tomorrow. Notice just said Thursday and Friday - well it probably said Jeudi et Vendredi.

Runs down to the village from Mt Chery are now closed.

@Chattonmill, sorry to hear of your transfer woes - I too had issues with a couple of companies when friends visited last season.

Sadly the Easter trip is now not going to happen, as we have some wedding planning etc to do, so we will miss you guys. But I would like to sort something out for next year, please, as skiing with you is highly entertaining, and one afternoon was not enough!

H.

And both sets were picked up in good time a week later when they left on Monday - OK about 6 minutes late in each case but how do you get round these villages and be everywhere bang on time - they have to have a pick of give and take and our friends were all very pleased. Likewise with Getaway back in February and Alpybus then.

@Harry Flashman, we are quite easy on dates, come and stay with us. That afternoon was a blast, I have to admit to trying harder due to the future Mrs F's credentials.
On another note, the Aston is being a wedding car tomorrow, then I will be looking to sell. If you are interested come and stay and try her out.

When I was in Montriond at the beginning of October I had lunch at Le Bout du Lac then walked up to the Cascade D'Ardent which I had not done before. The path/track looked like it had been recently widened/improved complete with netting on one of the corners just by the waterfall so it is clearly not intended solely for walking. The improvement stopped a bit above the waterfall where the path enters Ardent itself but it looked like it was going to continue behind the buildings and up to the gondola bottom station. Anybody know if this is intended to be a ski track in winter, maybe to reach more car parking by Lac Montriond, or is it only supposed to be a summer mountain bike track?

It was improved/ fixed after the floods and was closed for most of the early summer.

Having ignored my own pleas for people to use the weather thread for weather I thought I'd resurrect this one to thank @sarah and @snoozeboy for an entertaining pub crawl the other night. So much for going home early. It was nearly midnight by the time Harry and I dragged ourselves up to Petit Chatel and the 07.00 departure slipped 3/4 of an hour. A quite foul drive up to Holland via Luxembourg (diesel at £0.68 a litre anyone?) followed.

See you again when the season gets going.

Great to meet @snoozeboy at last and thanks for the advice on my car parking dilemma yesterday! We had fun and games trying to borrow spanners and dismantle barriers yesterday also managed to get stuck despite winter tyres and needed to chain up! Entertaining 24 hours in Chatel!

@sarah, sounds as if you had a busy fleeting visit! We established that our new car coped with the snowy roads ok, that the dog gets snow stuck all over her long coat and her short legs, that we should have stuck the poles out to mark the edge of the drive last time we were there, but that was June...., and we are now looking forward to being back with all our family as well from 27th. Hi all.

Can anyone recommend a decent British ski school in Avoriaz, please? I've Googled it and found a few listed, but would like to know if anyone had any specific recommendations, before I go ahead and start booking. It's for my two daughters (10 & 7), who are both decent skiers (I know they'll be in different groups, but that doesn't bother them), but I'm going to be spending the mornings with my lad (3) and so they fancy going in lessons, so that they're not stuck with us.

Cheers!

@porkpiefox, I know instructors in The Snow Institute (TSI) and BASS Morzine and would recommend them. But also you have Avoriaz Alpine, PDS Academy, Ski Beyond. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the British ski schools in the area. I would have a ring around and see what they can offer as that might help you decide.

I've also been looking at lessons in Avoriaz, and am planning on a couple of 2 hour private lessons for my son and I. Unless I am mistaken ESF at 89Euros is considerably cheaper than any of the other schools. Is this correct, and is there a reason for it?
