Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hells Bells, you know what it's like with things like this, we're sort of 70-85% sure we had the vouchers and there again we're thinking did we ever have them as there's no logic as to where they've gone, and don't think dogs eat them?

That said would we have gone up to Montgenevre (twice) without them?

Though we did suspect that we would be unable to use them.....

So seeing snowangel., posting back on here was worth asking the question before we go down to Frejus and ask the question.

Is there an Off Piste Bash in Serre this year, just that I'd like to try and sell those touring skis I have if anyone might be interested rather than taking them back to the UK and Fleabaying them.

snowangel., I ordered two 6 day passes online in December and used our Pacti'cimes card number in the additional information box (this used to add on the loyalty points when I've done it in the past. However, I haven't had the euros added to our account yet (I think it was Dec 24th when I bought them). I've emailed Corinne, but only got a reply about the passes I bought at the lift pass office.

snowangel., merci, will pop down Wed, what's best time for you and who shall I ask for wink

Today after an easy week in La Grave decided to go extreme and x-country (well that was the plan) from Monetier up to Boussardes - after parking up at Monetier it was obvious it was a tad busy, but with the dogs piling out the van and other stuff with people all around it was so damn social and fun, though I think being on the other side of 50+ did help to be accepted Smile

Went to the booth and we showed our season pass day ticket which was duly dated and then we were on our way.........

I was amazed at how busy it was, usually a Saturday is the best day to ski "alpine" as the pistes are empty but x-country was akin to the M25, and know British army are out and think there were various clubs out training......so did start to become a little concerned avec three Jack Russels and numerous people hacking down the x-country piste at nigh on fast push bike pace, so was none too surprised when a x-country pisteur hauled us up and directed us to the pedestrian chemain to go with the dogs...........though has to be said in two years of taking dogs on the x-country piste have never been hauled up, but in two years have never seen a x-country pisteur Puzzled

Once past Le Casset things mellowed a lot, and the we went beyond where the x-country piste was closed and headed up towards Boussardes where we were the only idiots out.

What was quite cool was that we were skiing along the chemain which when we came back down presented quite a few challenges with the descents, and so ironic in that yesterday I was skiing La Grave etc without any second thought, yet stick me on some thin x-country skis on a 20m descent at 15 degrees and it's akin to Trifide 2 rolling eyes

Was really good and we ended up doing 10km though did not make Ferme Boussardes.

I'm getting taken to the ice hockey on Tuesday in Briancon by my neighbours, who are mad fans!

And Hells Bells, stopped off in Monetier on the way back and the place is really buzzing considering it's only early Jan. I also was curious about a shop that I've been driving past over the last week

Mrs WC is going to be testing some fat pow skis from Ibis / Ibris when we next get some gallons of powder skiing the local brand Duret...........

Late Edit just had a look at the forecast and now see snow for Friday - so guess when I'm driving from here to pick Mrs up from Lyon and driving up to Tignes Mad

It's snowing!

Have repeated this from the more general weather thread as it is somewhat biased to us here Smile

Did a bit of driving today, left here over the Col du Lautaret for a quick lunch in La Grave before heading on towards Lyon to drop the Mrs off.

Rain started near Bourg and by Grenoble was torrential, from there to Lyon was quite hard driving in the heavy rain.

Left Lyon at 15:00 and the autoroute all the way to Grenoble was really foul driving conditions with rain so heavy at times you were down to around 60kph and why oh why do so many French drive with no lights - it was the sort of conditions where you need all your fog lights on and even then a good chance you would not be seen from behind!

Rush hour traffic around Grenoble was on a par with a busy Saturday not helped by the weather Sad

Was curious as to when and where I'd start to see snow - temps at Lyon were 8 degrees, by La Grave 1400 it was +1 but snowing then the drive up to the Col snow was progressively heavier with it laying on the road - at the col (2058) it was -1.5 and back home at 1420 it was snowing heavy and temp is zero.

Looking at the rain radar http://www.weathercast.co.uk/radar/europe.html gives you a good handle on how the precipitation is tracking through.

You can see how much snow we've had overnight in the garden via the cam and a weather report in the morning here

Might have to be first lifts tomorrow, and I was going to catch up on some work whilst the Mrs is back in the UK Toofy Grin

Presume main Chantermerle lift office by the new lift ?

Just been speaking to my mate who lives above La Grave he reckons 20cm over there, here in the garden around 10cm will be more up top and still light snow and white out from the looks of things.

Interesting in that avalanche risk is still 2 for the area - they have not changed that from yesterday even though they must have know that there was going to be new snow, wonder what they will have at the bottom of the lifts?

I've not seen a thread for conditions in Valmeinier/Valloire. Which one would be best to look at to get an idea? This one, L2A, AdH or Val Thoren/3V? It's in between all of them, granted with some big mountains in the way!

hammerite, that's a tough one Puzzled

If it were me I'd go with Val Thorens wink

Back down and a little disappointing in that snow depth was only 15cm at best, but maybe I'm being a little too fussy.

Not quite first lift but once up did Casse du Boeuf straight down again and only a handful of people had been down and top section had not been pisted. Then back up and over to Vallons via Pres du Bois in the trees. Viz at first was good and getting better and was expecting a good time to be had, but cloud rolled in whilst on Vallons chair and it was dense, did two descents in viz where you could just about pick out the piste poles, but good for technique straight down fall line on tracked and untracked.

Then all the way back down via Frejus and then up and over to see snowangel., in Chantermerle who kindly sorted my Gallaxy tickets out, then back up and a couple of runs in the trees above Serre Ratier before heading home to do some work wink

The webcams suggest the pistes are looking much healthier. What are the slopes like at village level? Couple of months before I go and plenty of time for snow to fall. But always nice to see a deep base.

dan100, don't worry - a lot can happen in two months either way, pistes down to the valley in good condition as there is a snow cannin base, but with no snow and lots of skiers will get hard and icy quickly.

My garden (on the cam) will loose the snow quicker than the piste as we're South facing on the hill and get the sun far more than say Club Med which is pretty well in the shade all day at this time of year Toofy Grin

The weather foecast you've got shows it pretty much non-stop snowing thursday onwards?
I'm out on Saturday, think I might get to resort in time to go and grab an afternoon lift ticket. Flight is at stupid o'clock anyway so would be good to maximise slope time.

OK, thanks a lot !! I think the ladies in the office in Monetier requested the new cards as the one I have expired last June. Can Corrine post them up to Monetier for me? Don't worry if not, I will come down to Chantemerle, but it won't be until March now.

08:30 Thursday as you can see from the GardenCam it's snowing snowHead

Great day in La Grave yesterday, report and loads of pics to follow.

Surreal full moon last night (and that was before I started drinking) looked like some UFO had landed with just some eerie glow atop of Col de Granon.

Was Tim (Mojo's) b'day last night and many in there, and most reported a great day skiing yesterday here in Serre.

Since I started typing this snow getting heavier - all according to plan as I have to drive to Lyon tomorrow to pick the Mrs up before going up to Tignes for three of four days Confused

Lol... keep it coming Happy remember how Serre had ZERO snow in Nov / early December?! It can change fast and Tignes may be a less pretty resort, however it on balance has amazing conditions compared to most resorts over the entire season !!

That snow dump looks amazing, especially with so many other resorts struggling for snow coverage. I'm always amazed Serre isn't as popular as the other big French resorts, as while I have pretty limited experience, I found the variety of pistes and stuff to do in the villages as good as anywhere else, have heard good things about the off-piste, historically it's had great snow, and it seems a fair whack cheaper than the more famous names. Perhaps it's just the distance from Geneva/Grenoble, but Tignes is pretty annoying to get to as well? Or maybe it's just historical?

It seems like I've done this year the wrong way round: off to Mayrhofen this weekend with a week in Serre booked for March. Looks like it would have been much better the other way around - Serre conditions look fantastic now and I doubt the Austrian snow drought* will continue right through the season. Well, snow drought is a bit dramatic as it looks like most of the pistes are fine. And frankly I'm mainly just happy to be on the slopes again, as being a late convert to skiing I seem to have got the zeal of the convert.

Forgive my inexperience, but is there any link between conditions in January and those in March (i.e. is there anything I can read into the quality of snow now for what it's likely to be like when I get there)? I'd assume not, except perhaps that it makes sure the base is solid, but I've no idea really.

i wonder it is because lyon and geneva are not viable transfers and it is only in the last 10 years or so more carriers are using grenoble. grenonle is not a great airport to transfer to SC. The road over is the col de lauratet is frankly a little scary on a coach and the pass is very high and prone to closure in bad weather. i wouldnt say its a perfect transfer for tour operators. that said there clearly is solid demand for ADH, courchevel, meribel, val d'sere and tignes. Perhaps also the absence of a glacier and some of the villages are low. im only speculating. i really like it there and it is cheaper to eat and drink on the mountain
