Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

might be more reliable but the weather is quite difficult to predict accurately at the moment.

polo99, the forecast computer models re-run every 6 hours, which explains the changes!

Add in the vague nature of mountain weather and I don't believe there is such a thing as an accurate forecast.

However I've never had a bad ski holiday due to too much sun or too much snow!

What I don't get, is that a week ago the snow levels on the VT lower slopes were 100cm, and today they're 90cm. How is that possible?

I imagine the measuring is a fairly basic mechanism and bears little relation to anything in reality. Is the 90cm the depth o compressed piste? Is it the depth outside the tourist office? by the top of the carpet lift? Or a cursory glance out the window on the way to a warm goat's cheese salad.

Just been speaking to this weeks tenants in our apartment. They report very very good n piste snow conditions. Only run that seemed thin was right down into St Martin on the owed end of Jerusalem.

European measuring is SOOOOOO different to the US.. no idea how they do it. Tignes is the same.. its snowed 30cm in the last 3 days and they have increased the base by about 7cm. US would have gone up 12 inches !

Cheers emwmarine, Alex A, I guessed it was probably something to be taken with a pinch of salt. The most important thing is that the forecast is looking quite healthy - snow forecast every day up to Thursday Smile

Drove over from Tignes to La Tania with one daughter who is working there (Tignes) for a half day ski with her twin who is working there (La Tania) rolling eyes

First time in a while as a famille that we have all skied together. Many many years ago I skied a fair bit in the Three Valleys and I was amazed how quickly it all came back.

Was all really easy cruising on blues from La Tania over to 1650, pistes were in fabulous condition, though was sorely tempted over in 1650 as there was stacks of untracked, but I was on a tight leash by the Mrs to ski with my daughters, and for one of them who only had her ACL op in May conditions were ideal for getting that all important confidence back.

After we skied back to La Tania I was allowed off the leash and went up and skied some tracked out stuff under Les Lanches.

Back in Tignes now and plan is to ski St Foy in the afternoon before taking daughter back to La Tania and then coming back here (sucker for punishment) Crying or Very sad

In St. Martin at the moment and it's been snowing steadily for the past few hours, tiny flakes down at village level but hopefully more significant up top. Most of the pistes are ok but some are getting pretty scratchy and could do with a top up. Conditions off the sides of the pistes are pretty naff, not much point venturing off the beaten track IMO.

Today was sunny skies and great views everywhere. Took the trip over to Val Thorens today (along with eveyone else it seems). Views from the top of Cime De Caron were amazing. Was good for a day but still think I prefer Meribel and Courchevel though. The main blue run to lifts is a mogul field by the end of the and saw more reckless behaviout on the slopes there than anywhere else so far. Got hit hard on my arm by a skier going way to fast on a busy blue run above Le Folie Duce. I was knocked over but at least he said sorry and helped me up.

Raven, how are the piste conditions in Courchevel?? Would you say they are great, good or so so? Trying to find a fast route from Courchevel to La Folie Douce when I head there!

Saulire or vizelle
Go down, round to right after big rock
Head more right, at the split go right
Keep going down, follow the noise if 3pm or so.
Aim for just below the mid station of saulire express
Follow the noise

Job done

Snowing in VT at the mo. Not too heavy, but pretty good - about 1-2cm so far. Interestingly, the mountains in the distance towards Courcheval look like they are in sun.
Weather yesterday was incredible. Beautiful blue sky, visibility for miles and temps around -7, so snow conditions were excellent. Skied the two reds at the top of the Vallons gondola - amazing runs/views (quiet too!).

RE Folie Douce - our apartment is reached by skiing down the blue that passes that place (Plein Sud), so we see the carnage every day. They have a live DJ, MC and/or singer every afternoon doing eurobeat covers. Lots of people dancing in a VERY packed terrace. Also, just as many people sit on the slope above the bar drinking their own (and much cheaper) beer/wine.

Thanks for the inputs, will be heading to la Folie in Meribel for sure! Will be staying in Courchevel 1550 just below the Les Grangettes Gondola, I guess it's a good location!
Anyway, forecast are more certain for good amount of precipitation following the next days, hope it materializes in something for some pow pow and top up!

Quick VT weather update: it's snowing hard! and has been non stop since early this morning. The snow on the ground is lovely, but the clouds are low, the wind is strong in places (20-30km/h) and the light is flat. That said, we skied Plein Sud lift + the blues up Moutiere/Grand Fond and had a blast.
Anyone visiting tomorrow is going to have a great time. My first time here and I'm missing VT already.

Don't know how much snow has fallen but was snowing for most of the day in courchevel today. Thought I was going to freeze to death on some of the longer lifts!

Looking further down the valley here at Mottaret looks like the snow has fallen to quite low levels.

Hoping for some sunshine tomorrow.

Have arrived home today after a week in Meribel Village. Wednesday was the best weather but Friday was the best skiing. Tried to hop the mid-station Saulire first thing but it was shut so headed down to play around the Dent de Burgin, noticed Loze had just opened and managed to be about the third person down the black Dous des Lanches - fabulous fresh on a pisted base. Managed to do it twice before the crowds found it. Had a fantastic day and left today in brilliant sunshine and - I think - the promise of more snow. Sob!

If you're out next week, I think you'll have a great time!

Oh, and if Bring Your Sisters are playing at the Lodge in Village on Tuesday, I highly recommend it for a dose of guitar-based energy - even an old bloke like me was feeling quite rejuvenated, if a little deaf...
