not enough snow to ski on.... with the cannons on full tilt and cold temps then they can cover the area in 72 hours apparently so very best guess will be skiing by wednesday....

Good news about getting the cannons going, and impressive how quickly they can do something useful with them. How's the course going @ajc2260626?

problems they are having with the cannons is that its not cold enough to run them under 2500m and i am not sure it will be in the near future, needs to drop by about 4 to 5 degrees
i decided to knock the course on the head..... that i am just not going to be able to get the time to instruct in the future due to other constraints, brilliant trainer though (Rupert Tildsley of BASI and mountain masters)
i might go back to basi but i doubt it, just not for me i think

Dejavu (sp?).... weather wise and temperature wise it was much the same as it has been in recent days and no sign of snow yet I am sorry to report. In fact sadly it was actually WARMER this morning than it had been yesterday am at breakfast time and I don't think it even got below zero (well hardly) here in town last night!
It was a mixture of a few clouds but mainly clear and sunny today.
FIS came to visit and make a decision about the ski races which are due to be on next week and the week after - paah - not sure why they bother spending money to come up and see the conditions when anyone can tell you that they must surely be cancelled - at least the mens racing next weekend!
It was quite a satisfying day in many ways... LOTS of sorting out of my 'man cupboard' on the balcony which took ages but is looking neater now. Olivia had a VERY good half day (building up closer and closer to a full day as the days pass) in the creche which was great... In the afternoon we had a meeting with the bank manager to set up a joint account but whilst I was there she rejigged our mortgage and not only got a cheaper rate but shaved years of the term AND saved loads at the same time so it really was a productive meeting.
Clare has popped out for HIP Hideouts suppliers drinks party this evening so Olivia and I have had a fun evening and now she is sleeping well so I get complete control of the TV - yay!
Teaching tomorrow morning and will be watching the weather forecast closely as there was talk that there could be some snow on the way but personally I doubt it! Sorry a short one this evening.
P.S. Yes the snow cannons can only run down to about 2500m at the moment and the temp needs to consistently drop by about 4/5 degrees to make it possible to blanket the lower slopes properly. Another problems is that there is just too large an area that needs covering (even higher up) and in large quantities that they are going to have prioritise! If you are coming in the next couple of weeks expect serious compromises!

Not looking great at mo then! First time Ive booked this early in season in 7 years and am gutted that the snow fall is where it is at the mo. Doesn't change anything, cant panic about it and plans are set as we're coming in a few weeks - just hope things perk up for everyone's sake really!

Thanks for that. Hopefully, might be some snow over the weekend if I'm lucky then. Such a shame about the lack of snow, but I'm sure a week of drinking and using the snow that's there will be just as fun.

This will be our first Christmas in Tignes but our 6th one skiing. I've skied in Tignes with Mountainsun in November a number of times but never when the whoe area is open. I've got fingers and toes tightly crossed that I'll be skiing more than the glacier this time.
If I were of a supersistious nature I'd be blaming myself for my hubris in showing off during last months visit about how much fun it was going to be to ski back to Les Boisses.......

BELIEVE FOLKS, believe...
Being the eternal optimist I am I am confident the neige will come. I can recount several Winters over the past few years whereby things have changed to a winter wonderland very quickly so you never know and indeed a week or two is a very long time in the mountains and anything can happen!
And on that note it was SNOWING today.... yes folks it was! OK it started late last night and as I turned in last night there was about 0.5cm on the ground outside the front door.... so when I awoke this morning the first thing I checked was if it had snowed anymore.... alas it had barely changed at all! In fact there was about 1cm on the ground down here and the valley had a thick cloud all through it. The 'snow' came and went all day but never really took hold although it was heavy at times. The problem for the most part is that just because it is just cold enough to snow the ground is still quite warm. So much of the place is still bare and the roads are just wet as opposed to snowy. So all in all whilst it is welcome it is just a token effort. Higher up there will have been a little more but not to much to change things.... yet!
The longer range forecast does point to snow by the end of the week but as anyone who lives in the mountains knows you ONLY EVER look about 48 hours in advance on the weather forecast front as not only can things change but the mountains truly make their own weather - so basically who knows what will happen in the next few days!
It was nice not running our little chalet business and having to drive to the airport today as we were able to have some family time. Amongst other things we popped to Snowberry so see some friends and for seasonnnaites to meet Olivia. We also went to a really nice new cafe called Rize that has just opened under the Portillo building in central Val... Run by and set up by a couple of long term seasonnaires who like us have a family and live out here long term they are trying to make it family centric. It is on the site of the old Abracadabar / Switch Bar and serves good tea and coffee / milkshakes as well as cakes and will in due course do things like pananinis AND they have license. There is a whole corner devoted to a children's play area so it is brilliant and lots of expat (and in due course non expat) families were and will go in there.... well worth a visit - bravo Tania and Andreas!
So we whiled away a couple of hours there, then popped next door into one of the offices in the Portillo building where our friend Nick has set up a takeaway meal place. We were his first customers. It is like the firm 'Cook' so they serve GOOD quality frozen meals that you pop in the oven and off you go. So a yummy curry for two is on the menu tonight. Check out www.bonappetitealpes.com for more info (his franchise is so new that he has not been listed on the website yet but you get the idea).
The final (not such fun) thing in town now is the arrival of STUDENTS..... I can't complain as I was one of those students in the late 90's on Uni trips here (in fact where I REALLY found my passion for the Espace Killy). As usual several hundred of them are staying in the blocks all around us here and there has been a mini gazebo set up outside processing their arrival all day now as several coaches come into town. There is some music outside at the moment but hopefully that will calm down a little. The good news is that Olivia's bedroom end of the apartment is quiet so I doubt we will be affected much. Indeed I sleep through anything so I doubt I will be kept awake but Clare is a light sleeper so there could be some f'ing and blinding out the balcony door later this evening (put your crash helmets on folks!).
And that is about all folks. Another quiet day tomorrow - perhaps a family swim and then it really is the start of the season for real as the work will be pretty relentless for the foreseeable future starting Monday. As a ski school we have about 100 members of the Ski Club of Manchester coming out to ski with us this week so plenty of activities and teaching with them this week!
OK TTFN
A rare gap in the clouds between the mini flurries - a freshen up at most!

@FiFi .... would it make it worse if i said 3 weeks in the usa was cheaper than 10 days in the alps ,and that we spent the first week in LA in 86 degrees before the hour and a half flight to salt lake
2 weeks in a 4 star hilton in salt lake was 700 quid
I think the lack of snow might be my payback for 12 years of gloating

A beautiful day 'up top' and high above the valley clouds. (NOT my picture but a TDC colleague took this picture)
It was a lovely day to be skiing... well up high above the clouds anyway! We awoke to thickish and varying cloud and very light snow again down here in town. Up high my colleague who was teaching got the photo above up on the glacier!!!!! The cloud lower down refused to budge most of the day and we had light flurries that resulted in about 1cm of snow falling across the resort once again! It looks like there is more snow than there is on the lower slopes and trees but we know there really is not too much!
The FIS rep has changed his visit until Wednesday to make the final decision on whether to race the Womens races in a little UNDER 2 weeks time... I really cant see it happening personally and there is still no real snow forecast in the short to medium forecast.... even the optimistic snow-forecast.com are not forecasting anything!
So this morning comprised a family lie in.... well the students did wake us up a couple of times during the night so we intentionally overslept this morning and let Olivia oversleep too. After a lazy breakfast etc we headed for a family swim at the pool and being Sunday morning they not only put the pool temperature up but it is geared towards families so there was several little ones (and some slightly older ones too) in there. We met the mother of another 7 month old little one that is in the same group as Olivia at the creche.... which was nice.
We have had a fairly lazy afternoon and done some calls home to the granparents and now Clare is heading down to La Daille to be one of the TDC representatives this evening meeting the Ski Club of Manchester whom we will be teaching this week.
I am on duty at home this evening so must crack on.
Here's hoping for a restful nights sleep and good conditions tomorrow. If the temperatures continue to fall as they are forecast to do then we should be able to continue to make artificial snow all night long and into tomorrow which can only help things!
