Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

trainee snowboard jedi - forecast keeps changing. My gut feeling is no change at all until the weekend when the temperature will drop and we might get a week ridge moving in to bring localised snow that could be quite heavy BUT it will be coupled with the ability to make artificial snow that will 'make it' for the weeks following that - i.e. I doubt we will have a strong front moving in... I really think that this time next week it will be about the same as it is now snow-wise and we will be starting to rely heavily on artificial where we can!

As far as schooling - she'll go to school here as the plan is that we are going to stay here (residency wise) all year from now on in.... however saying that we will spend considerably amounts of time in the UK in the non Winter months non-the-less. There are some people that have the kids in more than one school (France / UK) up to secondary age so who knows what will happen!

FiFi_Trixibell - very kind words indeed- thank you. I assume you mean private lessons - well depending on how many people in the session it starts at €225 for 3 hours.... clinics which are generally 3 x 3 hour sessions are also €225 (unless the prices have changed since last year as I have to be honest and have not checked for this coming season!). Just drop me a pm if you want more info or to check availability!

cockofthenorth - yea all you have to do if you are over in Val is go to the top of the Solaise and speak with Eric or one of the boys up there and they will be able to help you out. Or yes there is Toveiere in Tignes too as Kenzie says!

Back to today....

Stunning weather again but a stiff (venturi effect) breeze up on the glacier

Lovely weather and relatively quiet up there people wise!

Great views but could do with some snow!

They are trying to make artificial snow on the Face but there is a LONG way to go!!!! (Note the ice groomer for the ice rink appearing around the corner of the rink - why cant the whole mountain have underfloor cooling!

Well we awoke to cold temperatures (about -4 in town) with the snow cannons once again firing on the Solaise and Face etc. Like yesterday it soon warmed up into a lovely day and unfortunately it was so warm our neighbours were having lunch on their balcony - ouch!

We are a step closer to getting the internet (finally after 6 weeks) connected here.... the router arrived today so just need the actual connection doing and we can stop using our iPhones and / or Mifi thing here - yippee.

Olivia was left all by herself for an hour at the creche today and apart from some crying she did well and actually wolfed down her lunch they gave her. The food (being French) is very good. A friend who has their 1 year old in their saw the menu for their child the other day and it was a 4 course lunch with a cheese course - incredible. We have even heard stories from others who have their kids at the primary school where the kids get steak and foie gras for lunch there! Anyway tomorrow it will be upped to all morning left at the creche and little by little it is coming together and she is settling in!

In the afternoon I was up on the glacier with the girls I had the other day. They had been out partying all night last night so to be honest they were really off form and had to stop for about 45 minutes of the lesson to have lunch.... not the most useful lesson or a use of their time when they are that hungover etc! Anyway they gave it a bash but I am not sure what their father would say (he is paying their bill and they are here for 8 weeks!). It was BITTERLY cold on the Cascade chair as the stiff breeze was blowing right into our faces.

The snow on the glacier is still OK but with the numbers of people up there the stones and rocks refuse to be covered up properly and the artificial snow is a god saver. I tried after the lesson to ski down to the mid station where the cable car finishes (Le Signal) - it is do-able but you want your rock skis and to pick your route carefully and be prepared for lumps and bumps galore... nowhere near enough yet to be able to open it to the public I doubt!

We are still waiting with baited breath to hear what happens on the WC front - surely it is only a matter of time!

Think that is all for now.

problems they are having with the cannons is that its not cold enough to run them under 2500m and i am not sure it will be in the near future, needs to drop by about 4 to 5 degrees

i decided to knock the course on the head..... that i am just not going to be able to get the time to instruct in the future due to other constraints, brilliant trainer though (Rupert Tildsley of BASI and mountain masters)

i might go back to basi but i doubt it, just not for me i think

Dejavu (sp?).... weather wise and temperature wise it was much the same as it has been in recent days and no sign of snow yet I am sorry to report. In fact sadly it was actually WARMER this morning than it had been yesterday am at breakfast time and I don't think it even got below zero (well hardly) here in town last night!

It was a mixture of a few clouds but mainly clear and sunny today.

FIS came to visit and make a decision about the ski races which are due to be on next week and the week after - paah - not sure why they bother spending money to come up and see the conditions when anyone can tell you that they must surely be cancelled - at least the mens racing next weekend!

It was quite a satisfying day in many ways... LOTS of sorting out of my 'man cupboard' on the balcony which took ages but is looking neater now. Olivia had a VERY good half day (building up closer and closer to a full day as the days pass) in the creche which was great... In the afternoon we had a meeting with the bank manager to set up a joint account but whilst I was there she rejigged our mortgage and not only got a cheaper rate but shaved years of the term AND saved loads at the same time so it really was a productive meeting.

Clare has popped out for HIP Hideouts suppliers drinks party this evening so Olivia and I have had a fun evening and now she is sleeping well so I get complete control of the TV - yay!

Teaching tomorrow morning and will be watching the weather forecast closely as there was talk that there could be some snow on the way but personally I doubt it! Sorry a short one this evening.

P.S. Yes the snow cannons can only run down to about 2500m at the moment and the temp needs to consistently drop by about 4/5 degrees to make it possible to blanket the lower slopes properly. Another problems is that there is just too large an area that needs covering (even higher up) and in large quantities that they are going to have prioritise! If you are coming in the next couple of weeks expect serious compromises!

Some beautiful snow up there..... but be careful of the rocks off AND on piste in places!

Lots of keen people to get up the glacier - the queue was a lot shorter than it looked - perhaps 5 min wait for a car!

The Foehn still dominates things (unfortunately)....

It was made official today that the mens slalom and GS races on the Face and scheduled for next weekend have been cancelled. The representatives from FIS met with the Club best Sports representatives and amongst other things looked at the long range forecast. It was agreed that not only is there little sign of snow in the forecast but the technical task of making artificial snow before then would be impossible. It was estimated that some 25000 m3 would needed to be made (artificial snow) for the race to go ahead BUT on top of that there would be the icing and injecting as well as the laying of a LOT of padding and fencing to protect the races if they came out from crashing onto the bare rocks / grass etc around the course... impossible task indeed to complete all that in a week! They are still hoping that they could make the womens DH and SG races happen the week after that but again they will need to make a decision on that by early / middle of next week!

titan31 and PaulC1984 - beginner lessons are currently taking place right outside the top of the Vallon Gondola top station... after that it is on to the short green pitch down to the bottom of the Cema chair and lapping around like that. I have not heard / seen any construction of a tow rope for beginners up there - sorry! There could be but not that I know of... not ideal at ALL for anyone let along beginners at the moment!

So my day consisted of giving young Poppy her third of five sessions with me... We continued the work on the fundamentals that she needs to work on. She REALLY is putting into practice all that we are doing in the lessons and progressing fast. It is great to see a 19 year old really listen and work hard to improve. I have seen much in the way of improvements over the last week or so. Whilst her friends were sleeping off their hangovers she was keen to be up there and lapping around on a limited amount of run options but well done to her!

Clare meanwhile had a quiet morning as Olivia is having a 3/4 day in the creche... so we enjoyed a quiet lunch together and I dig some more odd jobs this afternoon.

An old friend of mine whom I shared a flat with some 8 years back when I first came to Val d'Isere is coming around for some tea any moment now which will be nice.

There was also a special delivery from the Savoireire man today (an independent British butcher down in Bozel who delivers up the mountains on a rota of resort to resort week by week). I ordered some yummy sausages, burgers and mince from him (bargain prices) and he delivers. Really good value for money. So you know me, I like my food, I CANT WAIT for "Minty Lamb Burgers" for dinner!

Not much else to report this end.... still no real sign of snow on the horizon.... they were making artificial snow even up on the glacier today which it has to be said is NOT a good sign. Of course they were making it lower down too but the fact they were making it higher up is a sign that they are worried. The amount of wear the top of the hill is getting means they are trying to keep the conditions there as good as possible for the high footfall it will receive and if there is not much else open then it will be vital that conditions and variety (amount of terrain) is maximised!

This will be our first Christmas in Tignes but our 6th one skiing. I've skied in Tignes with Mountainsun in November a number of times but never when the whoe area is open. I've got fingers and toes tightly crossed that I'll be skiing more than the glacier this time.

BELIEVE FOLKS, believe...

Being the eternal optimist I am I am confident the neige will come. I can recount several Winters over the past few years whereby things have changed to a winter wonderland very quickly so you never know and indeed a week or two is a very long time in the mountains and anything can happen!

And on that note it was SNOWING today.... yes folks it was! OK it started late last night and as I turned in last night there was about 0.5cm on the ground outside the front door.... so when I awoke this morning the first thing I checked was if it had snowed anymore.... alas it had barely changed at all! In fact there was about 1cm on the ground down here and the valley had a thick cloud all through it. The 'snow' came and went all day but never really took hold although it was heavy at times. The problem for the most part is that just because it is just cold enough to snow the ground is still quite warm. So much of the place is still bare and the roads are just wet as opposed to snowy. So all in all whilst it is welcome it is just a token effort. Higher up there will have been a little more but not to much to change things.... yet!

The longer range forecast does point to snow by the end of the week but as anyone who lives in the mountains knows you ONLY EVER look about 48 hours in advance on the weather forecast front as not only can things change but the mountains truly make their own weather - so basically who knows what will happen in the next few days!

It was nice not running our little chalet business and having to drive to the airport today as we were able to have some family time. Amongst other things we popped to Snowberry so see some friends and for seasonnnaites to meet Olivia. We also went to a really nice new cafe called Rize that has just opened under the Portillo building in central Val... Run by and set up by a couple of long term seasonnaires who like us have a family and live out here long term they are trying to make it family centric. It is on the site of the old Abracadabar / Switch Bar and serves good tea and coffee / milkshakes as well as cakes and will in due course do things like pananinis AND they have license. There is a whole corner devoted to a children's play area so it is brilliant and lots of expat (and in due course non expat) families were and will go in there.... well worth a visit - bravo Tania and Andreas!

So we whiled away a couple of hours there, then popped next door into one of the offices in the Portillo building where our friend Nick has set up a takeaway meal place. We were his first customers. It is like the firm 'Cook' so they serve GOOD quality frozen meals that you pop in the oven and off you go. So a yummy curry for two is on the menu tonight. Check out www.bonappetitealpes.com for more info (his franchise is so new that he has not been listed on the website yet but you get the idea).

The final (not such fun) thing in town now is the arrival of STUDENTS..... I can't complain as I was one of those students in the late 90's on Uni trips here (in fact where I REALLY found my passion for the Espace Killy). As usual several hundred of them are staying in the blocks all around us here and there has been a mini gazebo set up outside processing their arrival all day now as several coaches come into town. There is some music outside at the moment but hopefully that will calm down a little. The good news is that Olivia's bedroom end of the apartment is quiet so I doubt we will be affected much. Indeed I sleep through anything so I doubt I will be kept awake but Clare is a light sleeper so there could be some f'ing and blinding out the balcony door later this evening (put your crash helmets on folks!).

And that is about all folks. Another quiet day tomorrow - perhaps a family swim and then it really is the start of the season for real as the work will be pretty relentless for the foreseeable future starting Monday. As a ski school we have about 100 members of the Ski Club of Manchester coming out to ski with us this week so plenty of activities and teaching with them this week!

OK TTFN

@harvsurrey, whilst I do share your pain on the Europe vs USA thing (I'm massively jealous of friends living and skiing in whistler where I went on honeymoon) I can't help but feel slightly more green with envy that you've been able to ski Christmas in Utah for 12 years!! Toofy Grin definitely unsubscribe from those emails for now haha! Sure it will be great regardless for you too!

@PaulC1984, thanks! We cannot wait!very very excited as winter holidays are our absolute passion now so bringing all the fam out as well will be lovely although a new experience for us. Last time hubby went with skiing with his family, they went to valmenier and he was about 8 I think. the "older" ones of the group I think are just looking forward to the atmosphere and some very gentle cruising (gotta go easy on those knees you know!) us "young'uns" (??) on the other hand are looking forward to slightly more exhilarating experiences. I'd quite like to say I "smashed" Face on Christmas Day, particularly! (Lets hope I dont smash my face on Face mind....)

So am definitely excited to see forecasts of slightly better snowfall right down to the village and a week of much colder temps!

@FiFi .... would it make it worse if i said 3 weeks in the usa was cheaper than 10 days in the alps ,and that we spent the first week in LA in 86 degrees before the hour and a half flight to salt lake

2 weeks in a 4 star hilton in salt lake was 700 quid

@SnowSquirrell, Thanks, I was just about to say I was getting myself confused with resorts! (In Law's 60th birthday and too many wines last night so brain not engaged this morning on posting that.....!)

Husband wants me to try sache as well this time around (def not competant enough last time in Tignes) but I'm slightly terrified about the car sized moguls he reported! At least when I did Face last time I got down ok, albeit slowly which was a definite achievement! Ive improved a lot since then so really want to prove to myself I can get down it with more technique and speed this time around!

@harvsurrey, Yes that would definitely make it worse!!! Laughing We did whistler then hawaii to recover the legs - an experience I'm not sure we're going to get to repeat any time soon! Holiday this year itself is rinsing us! Not suprised that 3 weeks in USA is cheaper

A beautiful day 'up top' and high above the valley clouds. (NOT my picture but a TDC colleague took this picture)

It was a lovely day to be skiing... well up high above the clouds anyway! We awoke to thickish and varying cloud and very light snow again down here in town. Up high my colleague who was teaching got the photo above up on the glacier!!!!! The cloud lower down refused to budge most of the day and we had light flurries that resulted in about 1cm of snow falling across the resort once again! It looks like there is more snow than there is on the lower slopes and trees but we know there really is not too much!

The FIS rep has changed his visit until Wednesday to make the final decision on whether to race the Womens races in a little UNDER 2 weeks time... I really cant see it happening personally and there is still no real snow forecast in the short to medium forecast.... even the optimistic snow-forecast.com are not forecasting anything!

So this morning comprised a family lie in.... well the students did wake us up a couple of times during the night so we intentionally overslept this morning and let Olivia oversleep too. After a lazy breakfast etc we headed for a family swim at the pool and being Sunday morning they not only put the pool temperature up but it is geared towards families so there was several little ones (and some slightly older ones too) in there. We met the mother of another 7 month old little one that is in the same group as Olivia at the creche.... which was nice.

We have had a fairly lazy afternoon and done some calls home to the granparents and now Clare is heading down to La Daille to be one of the TDC representatives this evening meeting the Ski Club of Manchester whom we will be teaching this week.

I am on duty at home this evening so must crack on.

Here's hoping for a restful nights sleep and good conditions tomorrow. If the temperatures continue to fall as they are forecast to do then we should be able to continue to make artificial snow all night long and into tomorrow which can only help things!
