Continuing snowy outlook. Potentially heavy in the west.
Been snowing since early in the Ennstal. Super light snow in the early morning cold, a little warmer now.

Some nice hotspots on the Italian side there, good news for areas which haven't been blessed so far this season.

Do you think that could finally make for a good base in the west, concidering the new snow on old layer problem, or will it have to rain first for it to solidify?

^ Doubt the French Alps will get a proper base this season.
The end of deep winter is only a couple weeks away.
And then the spring melt begins 2-3 weeks after that.

@Whitegold, wtf. So 150 - 200 cm on upper slopes and 30 - 100 cm on lower slopes, as reported as current depth in most French resorts doesn't constitute a base then ?

This is where the SSW is biting...
@metoffice
Canada and the USA could see their coldest air in decades next week. Dangerously low temperatures could bring:
❄️ A wind chill of -40°C in Chicago
❄️ Up to 50 cm of snow around the Great Lakes
❄️ Frostbite
❄️ Hypothermia
❄️ Frozen diesel fuel

Meanwhile it's t-shirt weather and 15c on the US West Coast. A bit of an inversion in the Cascades. Nice spring like conditions for the end of January. Looking out a week it might return to cooler temps. With the cold air descending over the Mid-West it could provide for some storminess to slide down over Montana, Wyoming and Eastern Colorado.

Great bike riding weather in the PNW. 16c and didn't even need long sleeves on my bike ride today. Looking like the folks in the mid-West and NE New England states will have some nice cold temps throughout this up coming week. Will be a high pressure of cold air settle in for Monday with temps in the minus teens with moderate breeze to make things a bit uncomfortable, and then unsettled weather around Tuesday, with more cold air following along after the storm passes.
Could see a return to unsettled weather on the West Coast later in the week.

So did the storm deliver? Anyone in a resort with 50cm+?
Here in Engelberg 10cm came down in village only - hoping it was more on the mountain.

There are some folks here who challenge the idea that @Whitegold, is a bullshoot artist*. I think we should preserve this post as evidence.
Les Contamines has 1.5m at 1800m. The nursery slope opposite our flat at 1100m looks beautifully covered. The French Alps HAVE a proper base.
What a fool.

Errrrh no, but we never had that much forecast, but we did get the usual 1/3 of what was forecast, and now we have 45mph winds at altitude
@jedster, think you mean "The Northern French Alps" HAVE a proper base.
Whilst here there is hardly snow on S Facing slopes below 2,000m. N Facing are ok but that's more down to snow cannons.
I and others are actually getting a little worried as we really do need at least three of four dumps of 30cm, but there again we are more concerned at the off-piste and ski touring potential rather than piste skiing.

So, the PV seems to be recovering? But the NAO is supposed to turn negative (or is it already?). What effect could you expect from this, concerning the wather in the alps?

Yes, amazing in Austria right now. Books like rain forecasted below 1,800 meters on Friday in the Arlberg due to a strong fohn wind. What are the chances of that changing? Remotely possible?

@ArlbergMeister, think that’s going to be a short-lived event ... temps dropping again over the weekend with snow forecast at low levels on Saturday. Obviously, all of this will chop and change numerous times before then.

@franga, Thank you! Hoping it's minor. I'm bringing a good friend from the States for the long weekend. Will be his first time skiing in Europe, and I've really talked the Arlberg up. Was hoping for sun or snow!

Fair enough and commiserations. Although it is only Jan still!
I don't quite what the distribution of the piste miles and skier visits is but I'd have thought the lions share of the French industry has a good base already (3V, EK, LA/LP, GM, PDS, CMB, EMB - must account for a lot?)

Chicago hitting -25c this week.
Colder than the North Pole, South Pole, and Everest.
Could set new records.
Locals talking of a new Ice Age.
Good for local Michigan resorts, like Bittersweet.
