Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ah well at least she didn't plug any products or websites I suppose Happy

SCGB 9 day forecast for Argentiere (oops did I just plug a web service!?) is showing a few snow showers this Saturday, 5cm of snow on Thursday and 12 cm on Sat 22, so not so shabby.

cheers pam w, that actually makes me feel much better, and that I should stop worrying too much. 8 days to go until I get to VT!!

I notice a few weather sites are mirroring nozawaonsen's earlier forecast of warm weather over Sunday/Monday/Tuesday before starting to get a little colder on Tuesday night (18th). A few say a dusting over snow on Wednesday but I'll take that with a huge dollop of salt!

Ricklovesthepowder, It's going to be very warm for a few days (with a temperature inversion so valleys colder than hills overnight - there seemed to be several layers of inversion when I drove up last evening). There's still a lot of snow round though, and all but the lowest pistes should be OK - just don't go sacrificing any maidens in the hope of precipitation as much of it would be rain, to quite high altitude. Your wife, down in Samoens, will most definitely not be wanting any precipitation! Note that Chamonix Meteo says the outlook is "very uncertain" after Sunday. That's good, really, given the temperatures shown in some of the forecasts but underlines the point that poring over next week's forecasts is probably pointless at this stage.

Well, the Weather Gods like playing tricks.
Just now it was snowing here in Plagne 1800!
Been sun and clouds all day: warm in the sun, quite cool when clouds shut it out
Then this afternoon it got quite chilly - I put a layer back on.
And just now I looked out, and it was snowing - not rain, not even sleet: but proper snow
Only lasted 20 minutes or so. Now overcast.
Wonder what tomorrow will bring. snowHead

It's spring.

It gets warm.

There will be corn and slushy bumps.

The snow won't all suddenly melt.

If you can ski well, you will love it.

If you can't, get lessons or drink nice cold beer on the terrace in the afternoons instead.

Spring skiing rules!

Warmest it's been all year at 08:00 this morning +5, and no overnight freeze here at 1400m, and a stronger breeze than forecast, which might negate getting out on the push bike, will wait and see if it eases this afternoon

Tomorrow is going to be interesting to see what max temp gets to then gradually getting cooler though and now smatterings of snow weekend onwards, which is NOT what I want as have a big touring week 22nd so watch it puke rolling eyes

further edit temps gone up another two degrees in twenty minutes Shocked

Glad we weren't ski touring this morning (have a three beginners to take to ski school)

Weathercam, at least you got a breeze - would be useful here (Plagne 1800).
We got thick cloud - can only see 3 houses away.
So much for wall-to-wall sunshine.

18c in Samoens this afternoon. Sat out having lunch, with a bottle of wine wearing only a t-shirt. People milling around in shorts etc. very odd experience, never been this warm when I've been out here before. Spoke to some people who have just got back from a days skiing, they said that above Flaine is still good, but lower down its muddy in places. The runs into Morrillon are closed, and cascades down into Sixt is also now shut. The next few days are forecast to be similar to today if not warmer, I think the main issue is that nigh time temps are only dropping down to 5c so it isn't freezing.

Well, all of La Plagne is OK.
Cloud did soon disperse and blue sky all day.
Didn't meet any slush - just lovely granular sugar with some bumps
Even managed a bit of off-piste spring snow.

Seems lots of sites suggesting a change in the weather Friday, with snow over the weekend.
Fingers crossed snowHead

Ricklovesthepowder, you won't be getting a refreeze at Samoens (800m asl) overnight. Higher up you should be over the next few days.

http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/MS_070460_g05.png

That said there's been a shift away from colder weather in the second half of the week and it now looks pretty mild throughout the coming week with overnight freezing levels rising through the week.

Some suggestions of snowier weather next weekend, but the tendency has been for the current high pressure to remain very resilient.

nozawaonsen, I have to say the charts were similar a week ago predicting cooler and snowy for this weekend so I'm trying not to get too excited. Went for a nice walk today.

Ricklovesthepowder, 18C at 800m is not that unusual. I don't hang out in the GM so very often but Cascades is quite usually closed at this time of year I think.

I love the calm measured posts by nozawaonsen, and how patient he is with the rest of us hysterical posters who grab every indication of cold and snow with joy and dream of winter's return, and then pour out doom and gloom when the forecast changes to sun and warmth. I am as guilty as any.
Snowforecast predicting 50cm and temperatures of -9 this coming weekend. Perfick. I watch and wait, and try to be like Guru Noza.

Continues to look like quite a change for the Alps coming this weekend, with cold and snowy weather arriving on Sunday. The next couple of days will show whether confidence in that outcome is waxing or waning.

nozawaonsen, Can you remind me when the GFS ensembles change from high to low resolution, and what does that actually mean??

Thanks!

After al this worry about snow melt (although probably unnecessarily looking at the La Plagne thread), I've now got this change to worry about - flying Birmingham to Chambery on Sunday morning.

To be honest though the will-it-won't-it, too much snow, too little snow etc etc worry for me is part of the holiday, and just adds to the build up. Not that any trip I've been on has been adversely affected by snow or lack of.

I guarantee you it will change soon and then the flood gates will open. Very common for late march / early april to go back to snow. Plus I'm going to Chamonix on the 30th and I have good luck with snow wink

kitenski, the switch happens at +192 (8 days). You can see it particularly clearly if you look at charts on something like Meteociel. There's a very clear shift in the resolution between +192 and +204. What that means is that the trend will be more evident, but the detail (especially spatial resolution) will be less reliable (low resolution can also lead to apparent "exaggeration" of output). That doesn't mean that anything under +192 is definite (it isn't). If something passes through low res to high res and still looks in pretty good shape you can start to take it more seriously (eg the snowfall on 23 March), but you still need to see how it plays out.

nozawaonsen, thanks, but not quite sure what changes between high and low? Do they run with more data in the high resolution or what?

Just trying to further my knowledge Smile
