@queenie pretty please, there is food bank of sorts. "Rollende Herzen" based in Zell and See. They go round villages once a month and people can fill a shopping bag for free - food and other useful stuff. They come to Flachau. https://rollendeherzen.at/

@holidayloverxx, interesting. I have seen that van before, I thought it was only a care service.

@munich_irish,
@Cacciatore mentioned wealth per capital so that is what I referred to rather than GDP.
Yes GDP is recognised as a better indicator of a country's wealth but please take that up with him/her.
If the GDP does drop in Austria by up to 15% then Austria will most likely drop a few places in either table (up to 6?).

Yet Austria has no concept of "charity" outside of international aid or environmental causes, no food banks, etc. |
This isn't altogether true, for there are “Lebensmittel-Tafel”, which seem to me to be much like food banks (and seem to be becoming more common recently). This link gives details (in German) of a local one organised by the Red Cross. I don't know how widespread they are.

There’s a mobile soup kitchen in Innsbruck, but we’ve only seen it at night so it’s not particularly visible. There are quite a lot of homeless people in the city, and I suspect the number will have increased.

@Scarlet, I've seen a few beggars in Salzburg, but according to colleagues they are usually asylum-seekers who are housed in a facility south of the city and have nothing to do all day (they cannot work until their claim is successfully processed and they get a work permit). I have seen the police rounding them up in the evening, presumably to take them back to the asylum accommodation. I haven't seen anyone sleeping rough.

Here in the Vorarlberg there were always a few (Romanian largely female) beggars hanging around Dornbirn station ..haven‘t seen them for a while..but this was anyway very much the exception..I‘ve never ever seen any rough sleepers and presume anyone attempting it is rounded up by the police..

..I‘ve just seen the link which DB posted earlier today about the use of Zweitwohnsitze..this is a complex issue not least because Gemeinde such as Lech have been keen to encourage (wealthy) second home owners to come, invest and then spend money locally..
the Bürgermeister is quoted as saying
„Sie halten sich an die Gesetze, aber irgendwo ist schon ein Bisschen eine Ungerechtigkeit„
Which I read as „they (second home owners) are obeying the law but this does still seem to be rather unfair“...
This could be viewed as trying to „have it both ways“..ie benefit from second home usage during normal times, but then complain about that usage (even tho’ lawful) when it doesn‘t suit..

@Bergsteiger278, what's the problem? Are the 'Zweitwohnungsbesitzer' no longer spending money in Lech? Can't think of any other reason why Herr Bürgermeister would be complaining.

@Bergsteiger278,
I suspect the problem is that if the locals can‘t rent out their properties they don‘t want ‚outsiders’ doing it. The police are probably checking if the people staying there are the owners.

@queenie pretty please, if you go to Bhofen there are beggars outside almost all of the supermarkets. There used to be one old guy always outside the Billa in Altenmatkt who was always so lovely and friendly, he used to tell me about his family back in Syria, haven seen him in a few years now so hopefully he was allowed to work, his German was quite good.

It's been on the news this morning that a large cluster of the South African Covid mutation has been detected in Tirol. They are not ruling out putting the whole of Tirol into quarantine (again!).

According to the news here in Ländle the SA mutation has been detected in „Tiroler Unterland“..iirc that means around Wörgl, Kufstein & Kitzbühel..from the discussion a decision over putting the whole of Tirol into quarantine seemed to be in the balance..„mal schauen“..

@DB, I think international news has picked this one up, and it's grown legs! I'm more inclined to believe the local news teams:

In response to an enquiry from ORF Tyrol, Governor Günther Platter commented shortly afterwards. The situation was taken "very seriously", Platter said. However, an extension of the lockdown is not being considered: "Since Jochberg, we have had every PCR test checked for abnormalities. And that is why we have a very clear picture in Tyrol. We currently have 75 confirmed cases of the South African mutation. And of these, five people are still ill. So you can see that the majority has overtaken." |

^^Quarantine of whole Tirol is still unlikely I think, but there does seem to be some talk of potentially not allowing the same openings of shops/etc as planned. Or maybe it's just so people are mentally prepared when everything gets closed again two weeks after the openings

Police in the Steiermark have also been following up foreign/out of area number plates.
Some adults suddenly had to make a business trip and decided to take their family & ski gear with them.

@DB, we skiied Haus yesterday and today and can't believe the difference between the 2 days. Yesterday we had the whole resort virtually just for us, quite a few W plates in the car park, but today it was rammed! Just like a normal day in the season, so many W plates I can't believe there is anyone left still in Vienna, I think the next 2 weeks will be interesting as most counties here have semesterferien,there was socially distancing going on, but the busiest I've seen so far and I think it may get some bad press again as there is no way people can stay 2m apart in the queues.

At Riesneralm today and while it's busier than when we were here on a Sunday a few weeks ago, it's still reasonably empty compared to last year (which was the first time I've been here).

What do people think the chances are of foreigners being let in by end of Feb? I'm thinking disappearingly low. Just wondering whether to cancel my reservation early - I have free cancellation up until the day before but don't want to keep the slot busy when someone could get a last minute deal

@Pastorius, zero, I’d say. Austria are tightening entry rules and accommodation providers don’t expect to be open until sometime in March. That all hinges on the infection rates dropping below 50/100,000. I thinks it’s about 108 now and only coming down slowly.
With the “UK” variant, I’d be surprised to see any travel open up to Austria for quite awhile yet.

@Pastorius, ultimately I think vaccination will be golden ticket but I wouldn't expect that hand to be played until enough of the population is vaccinated so it's not a discriminatory policy, which for Europe will probably not be till September

Being allowed in I'd also say essentially no chance. Maaaaaybe Easter... But there clearly are already tourists about right now.

IMV There is no chance of Brits being allowed into Austria for tourism this winter season: skiing is any event restricted to „Tagesreisende“ (ie those living locally) and there are very few non-locals of any sort on the slopes here..

..plus virtually all hotels and other accommodation remain closed and are running on skeleton staff..it would not be feasible now to open and staff them fully before the end of the season in early April..
