As predicted -- last week -- wind shut some lifts in Italy today. Austria looks blowy tomorrow.
As predicted -- last week -- heavy rain in the north and south Alps today.
Rained at times up to 3000m in France, such as La Plagne.
Folks got soaked in Italy below 1700m, such as Sauze d'Oulx.
Homeruns turning brown across the western and eastern Alps.
Brief cold snap coming Fri thru Tues. May nudge -20c at 2000m at night in the NW Alps.
Resorts need to blow snow.

They will need water to blow snow - not a lot of this around judging by the levels in reservoirs.

I noticed this in Austria last week that the reservoirs are low. Why is this ? I would have thought with all the rain and high temperatures (=snow melt) that the reservoirs would be topped up. Temperature has been too high for weeks to even run the canons. Cant they pump water up from rivers in the valley into the reservoirs or is that not allowed ?

Rained hard all day in/around London all day despite a forecast of brightening up after lunch. Is that something to do with the low ending up somewhere slightly different to expected? Or a deeper low?

@melandnick, no ski centre is going to run a snow cannon in March it doesn’t make sense financially or environmentally, I suspect the reservoirs have been allowed to run low as I suspect they always are at thus time of year to allow for snow melt in the high mountains.

Still sunny in Innsbruck at the moment, but the wind has picked up since this morning and the local press has a weather warning for tomorrow with 15-30cm of snow in the valley (down to about 800m, valley bottom is about 550-600m) and up to 50cm in some areas. If you are travelling here tomorrow or Saturday, it could be a bit mental. |
MeteoGroup forecast Innsbruck itself to be snow-free for the forseeable future.

We need that for coming flights, snow and diversions to Munich would be a mini disaster for our plans.

Good puke in Chamonix at altitude.
Most lifts on hold until ~12pm midday tomorrow (rumor).

That would be environmentally insane and if it isn’t banned then should be, but even the biggest valley rivers - like the Inn and the Ötz - are super low, way below the ‘low water’ level mark. The side valley streams like Rosanna, Trisanna, etc have nowhere near enough water. Plus as above no financial sense in blowing snow now anyway.

Very heavy rain last night I’d say looking at the local cams above 2000m then whoosh as predicted about 11pm the PN level fell like a stone , 15cm of fresh at 1550m , cloud and sunny up top . Enjoy the fun today .
Looks like La Thuile over the border got a pounding lower PN level .

Albeit the snow line appears to be at 2000m and I suspect that amount of snow up higher would close most resorts.

It's quite extraordinary. Never felt the need to ski in the Dolomites before, figured it was pretty but didn't get much snow.
That's out the window this week The Madonna Di Campiglio webcams look like the Snowpocalypse.

Looks like it's coming down quite hard in Mayrhofen, too, albeit not to the same levels. At least, though, it hasn't turned out to be one of those much anticipated snow events which fizzles to nothing as the day approaches, which we're all no doubt all too familiar with.

@shannyla, it doesn't get as much snow but it is unspeakably beautiful, and all the more so when it does get snow. Also, they have loads of couloirs through the grand canyon like rock formations, and not much off piste traffic for competition so when its good it can be really really good.
|

@shannyla - have been to Madonna for the past couple of years and even without fresh snow have had good ski-ing and beautiful scenery
- food fab as well! They manage the snow very. This year the group decided to go somewhere different ( on 2nd of March) so we are going to Austria where conditions not great and Madonna has a tonne of snow - you can't win!!!

The season is saved! Aosta Valley & Via Lattea seem to have had big top ups, Dollies getting battered, Austria getting blanketed, and going very left field Vogel in Slovenia had 40cm overnight. More snow to come too.

Off to Soll so have a decent amount of resort access with the Skiwelt. Will aim to get higher next year. Tricky balance with our group between cost, Apres and ability.
Where have you booked?

@Reezo, I fancied the SkiWelt to, looks like some interesting skiing with a fair amount of travel. I couldn't find the right mix of accommodation there and it was a bit last minute, so went for Mayrhofen. I thought the town would add to the experience and there are all the other options along the valley, I've never been there before. Glad we have some more snow - that was also a worry with the lower resorts. I had to avoid the temptation to fall back on the high snow sure French options!

We were in Mayrhofen last year. Really liked the town and the Apres is excellent. The skiing was good and we were lucky with decent conditions there. As a group, we would go back.
Can’t see my group diversifying from Austria for a few years. Best value for what my group needs and ticks all the boxes.

@Dubmuffin, you'll have a free train or bus to Zell am Ziller.
You will enjoy skiing that area.
Even if you don't return to the starting point by 16, at the end of the day you will find a bus in designated valley stops that will take you back to M

Today was a pow day
Italy and Switzerland will get the motherlode next week -- Mon to Weds.
Dump of the season.
Looks easily 1m at ~2000m.
Looks like biblical rain below ~1500m.
