OMG, wish I hadn't looked at the 6z now. High pressure slides back in over europe 7th to 15th. So far this is only one run, and a lot of it is FI, but it shows an option for yet more December weather. Sure hope this isn't confirmed.

As I've stated I have a trip there 1/29-24. I'm locked into Verbier the first half and supposed to go to Zermatt the last 3 days. I can get out of the latter and considered The Arlberg, but it's a 5 HR drive. As Europe looks as dry as the Mojave desert for January as well, is it worth the change or not. Austria looks to stand a better chance at this point to get snowfall at least in the next few days. Everything falls off the Swiss map once you get within 4 days.

There is a trap of considering every low pressure in the Mediterranean to be a Genoa Low. This is not the case.
What the weather will be like in four weeks time is anyone's guess.

Its terribly sad....read of 45000 seasonal workers getting no hours ....think that was just France. Perversely I must hope that's across the whole of the alps.
I am considering cancelling my vacation which would have been the longest one of my life. From the data this appears to be the worst winter in my 50 some years of age in the place where Ive rented. Ahh well, I can get to colorado just as easily I suppose and stay in motel 8s instead.
Here's to hoping my not going commences the storms for all those workers.

It really is sad,
Having my own business I often wonder what this means to people to there that need to max revenue in such a short season. I feel for them, no idea how you cope with it.
I thought by now there would be snow starting to show up in the forecasts and runs but doesn't look like happening all to soon.
I'm heading to La Tania in March for two weeks, and even with marginal conditions I'll have fun, going to take my climbing kit, maybe a get a guide and take a top in.
Fingers crossed the systems change and they get a 2 week long dump!

Looking at some of the webcams in French resorts I have visited over the years some of the photos for lower down don't look good at all, and the weather forecast seems to be unchangeable. We are due out in 3v in mid Feb when you need everything open to disperse the crowds. The weather can of course change, we all know that, but local businesses will suffer in January if this keeps up too much longer. At least there is snow making but I wonder how much longer they will be able to use it - the water levels must be quite low

After a long tea and discussion with my wife this morning we have bought a 4 country train pass and will hike, ski, eat and explore for 4 weeks based out of the Valais. I will buy beers for those I come across whose holidays appear to have been "ruined"....After all how can any holiday in the Alps be ruined if you choose to have fun. I apologize for thread drift but the best thing to do for some of those 45000 workers is to go and have a great time. Onwards!

well there at least appears to be some sort of snow event in the offering for the 2/3rd of jan and again the following weekend, seeing as I'm in PDS next sat and sun, that would work for me! not looking for off piste, just want something skiable, rather than having to take my ice skates!

Here in the Central Pyrenees it is a mixed picture. Both Baqueira Beret and Peyragudes have some very decent skiing, though unfortunately our local resort Luchon-Superbagneres only has a few runs open (though one of them is the longest). The real issue is the continuing repetition of an extended cold period showing from 6 days out only to turn into a half day blip and then temperatures rising again.
Very big problems with wild fires in the brush at the moment causing a major concern for some villages.
Lets hope 2017 makes us smile a little....

Out in courchevel today, plenty of skiing available. Yes there are a few bare pistes but in general not too bad. A few patches of ice around. Nice and warm in the sun.

It's been a December to remember in the PNW. Typical La Nina winter shaping up to provide at least at present a lot of snow. I can attest to first hand experience. Most Cascade ski areas are getting close to 5 meter snowfall totals for the season to date.
A cold High Pressure is coming in, and temps will be close to or slightly below 0 C to ring in the new year. (I'm talking about temps at Sea Level) So the mtns will be cold! Groomers are like velvet these days. And the snow has been more like Champagne, or at least sparking wine than what we refer to as Cascade Concrete. Even Tahoe area is having a very good December. Of course that brings crowds to partake in the snow.
All the main ski resorts of Colorado, Utah, and California have really good snow bases, as more cold air coming down from the Arctic to keep the snow well preserved. Same goes for BC ski areas.
Pic from yesterday skiing at Stevens Pass in 30 CM of fresh.
Have a safe and Happy New Year!

@Brothergrimm, holding the line. Good.
In the meantime the games afoot. 12z GFS brings in three bands of light snow into the northern Alps on 03, 05 and 07 January.
This would look something like this with parts of Austria profiting.

And out on FI GFS eschews the idea of building heights over the Atlantic but instead invites the jet in.
Which if it happened would be a much snowier outlook for the northern Alps (though less cold than some recent output). Then again it's FI.

I wanted to thank all who participate in this thread each year. Past 9 years I have been to the Alps in January (Normally Ski Amade) with varying degrees of snowfall (2012 being the best by far) am heading out to Neustift on the 18th so I have everything crossed but do enjoy this thread and appreciate all those who contribute their time and knowledge.

No, but when the lows push down the jetstream, they dump snow

@nozawaonsen, happy new year to you too and thanks for all your informative posts.
Here's hoping my decision to book a flight to Salzburg pays off with the latest forecasts looking good for Eastern Austria. If I end up skiing there my second week after Saalbach they're hardly short of great places to ski and stay

@nozawaonsen,
Well, I have been well and truly plunged into a slough of despond at the weather and the outlook in advance of my forthcoming season in Chamonix. However, while cooking my New Years Eve steak I have been bucked up no end by Curtis Mayfield. I don't know where you find that stuff, or how it is attached to your post, but it is most welcome. Happy New Year, and keep up with the good work. Move on up ....

As a long term lurker I want to say thanks to @nozawaonsen for your informative posts this year and for several years previously. I hope we all get the skiing conditions we hope for in 2017, but what will be will be. I would like to think I've learned a lot following these threads over the last few years and I can only thank you for that.

We are just driving back from a great week in Samoens and I wanted to thank the snowheads for helping me understand the weather! They've done a fab job at the resort with Dahu (blue) and Marmotte (red) and the beginners area - all things considered. There's even a short black being skied up top. Bit stony here or there and a couple of crusty patches but definitely skiable and the village and all its hostelries are as welcoming as ever. Flaine also not in bad shape at all - we had two fab days there on very decent pistes. I do hope it repeatedly dumps down for anyone heading out and understand that for the serious snowhead all of the above may not be enough - but for once-a-year average but enthusiastic skiers like us, fear not, a great time is still to be had if your objective is simply to ski and have fun. Happy New Year all.
