Zero-G, after the wind of the last week I would keep away from the Jeurs sector for a few days. There were very large cornices there last week and the entry on one of the main gullies was gnarly as..

eddiethebus, it's on the Swiss side, the area east of the Tete du Balme. I've had some of my best skiing over there but the prevailing wind in the valley dumps huge amounts of snow and I have seen some very large spontaneous avalanches there. If there has been a significant snowfall and high wind it's takes a few extra days for it to be safe, plus there are some steep slopes. It's common for someone to get the chop over there each season. The people walking up the hill from the top of the Tete du Balme lift are heading there.

Thanks for your great updates snowheads. I'm heading over there for a short solo trip from 17th to 21st and I've been obsessively checking this thread. I know a watched pot never boils but this one seems to be simmering away nicely.

it wasnt the rescue at the bottom of the coulier under the cornu lift was it? |
Yep, that little couloir just to the (looker's) right of the final ungroomed steep pitch of the Cornu. I'm not sure of the outcome, it was too cold to stand around stationary for too long. But let's just say that I picked my way down that ungroomed pitch very carefully (almost minced my way down!) after seeing that.

another death too - a Lithuanian. Inevitable, I suppose, given the conditions, that people will be out taking chances.

jbob, that's on the other side but didn't know about that one. pam w is right, with conditions being what they are, people may be taking more chances. It's certainly been a lot busier this week.
Sadly, this snowy period is drawing to an end and the upcoming forecast is looking a tad dry.

under a new name, last night's meteo was showing no new snowfall for the next few days apart from light flurries today. They weren't exactly light flurries though, it snowed properly for the first few hours today and it was complete whiteout. Still very good skiing, apart from the hordes – where the hell did they come from?
It has been growing steadily busier each day this week and the queue for the top bin was nuts today. I suppose we shouldn't complain, all these people bring in money that keeps the infrastructure going

The ensembles show snow maybe a lot tomorrow night and Monday. Have fun.

Zero-G, it's easy, the top wiggles are temp in centigrade read off the left scale, the bottom wiggles are rain/snow in mm/cm read off the right scale. The more the wiggles converge the more reliable the forecast. Thursday might be a better day for the guide. Where are you thinking of going?

jbob, ah thanks, by converge, do you mean the all the temp wiggles converging with each other and all the snow wiggles converging with each other? And why the many different coloured wiggles in each group?
Not sure, thought I'd let the guide decide based on weather and conditions.

Zero-G, each line is the output of a run of a computer model (some an average of models) based on slightly differing inputs and/or a different way of calculating.
When they all agree or converge the forecaster will be confident that they are an accurate prediction.
The temp and precipitation are separate. They do link in that disturbances, ie rain/snow are usually accompanied by warmer temperatures, conversely clear days are usually colder.
So according to the chart above Wed, Thurs will be cold and clear.
http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/MS_746_ens.png this link will always give an upto date picture for Chamonix, the guys at meteo cham will be using this and my guess is they are way better at interpreting it than me

Zero-G, not tempting fate but "a tad dry" would be my (ironic) description of January and February 1990, when it didn't snow, at all, for NINE WEEKS!!!
I am quite happy with the average alpine cycle of a few day sun and a few days snow, repeat.
Had a few hours up Brevent late afternoon, till lifts shut. Pistes as good as pistes get, nive and cold, lovely snow. Couloir under Cornu chair nice but decidedly skied. Will have a nice rutline in a few days
Home run a wee bit stony. Would it be unfair to ask that if you can't ski it without sideslipping or skidding that you download? It would last a lot longer for everyone else that way, and you know you aren't enjoying it.
|
|
|
|

under a new name, you did NOT say that out loud?
As for the 'scrapers' on the home run, I hear what you're saying but they paid the same for their lift passes so they can't very well be denied. Although you do have to wonder why they do it when the barrier at the top says something like "hard snow" and it's marked as a black run.

Actually, I'm surprised you found it quieter today, the number of arrivals I saw last night and throughout today is alarming. And the square hasn't been this busy since the Christmas/New Year weeks. I bet the retailers are happy.
