paulio, are you being deliberately difficult? Read the link. It is often very much warmer up a mountain than down in a valley. That's what inversion is about. Davidof tried to explain. That's why waynos said that they can only blow snow on the LOW pistes, because the up on the HIGH pistes it's too WARM.

James The Last said a MINIMUM of 0.5 degrees drop per 100m of climb.
i.e. it's MATHEMATICALLY IMPOSSIBLE for it to be colder higher up.
He's a weather expert, so that's good enough for me.

Look, it's very simple. The middle of the Earth is very hot (over 400 degrees), and space is very cold.
So the higher up you go, the colder it gets.

Until a certain point when you start to get close to the sun, then it gets warmer again! As Icarus discovered.

stanton, I'm ignoring your posts on weather on principle - frequently over the last few years you have assured us that going skiing was a waste of time as there would be nothing to ski on.

mountainaddict, that model is looking nice for the night between the 24th and 25th November! For the whole of the Alps even. We can but dream i suppose. most of my local friends here and hereabouts who work in the ski areas in winter are not too worried yet.
Still too early to worry too much. Loads of Eastern Europeans on the road home last night with skis etc on/in their cars. Is it a big holiday in the Czech Republic and Poland this weekend? The glaciers are going to be heaving! As I remember they were this time last year as well.

I like those lasers being fired into the sky from those houses. Is that why the air is warmer higher up in the second picture?

I, for one, am enjoying paulio's alternative weather thread.
maybe its warm higher up the mountain because thats where the sheep, cows and goats are, and those bugs fart like troopers.

The blocking pattern sitting over eastern Europe is weakening and will lose it's influence next week. Temperatures are forecast to drop and the snow will follow.
Now stop worrying!

On a pedantic note....wouldn't 'the road home' be taking them to Eastern Europe and not to the Austrian glaciers ??

We skied Stubai and Hintertux at the back end of last week. Stubai's overspill parking was well in use but the glacier never seemed to get that busy on the Thurs and Fri. Meanwhile, Hintertux was heaving on the Saturday (some pistes plagued by dangerous boy racers) but a lot quieter on the Sunday.

Ah! the depths to which they descend in the absence of a decent phone tap.
It has been unseasonably warm, until last weekend.
A very unseasonally cold -2C in Geneva when I opened the front door yesterday...
