Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I see the tradition continues of members of FtS's party being photographed crashing spectacularly. I've never been so relieved at not having been caught up in the famous 3V incident.

today was Dorfgastein and grossarl and it was great! snow is mostly excellent, especially up at the top, but it is getting thin in places. It's pretty good down to grossarl but the runs down to dorfgastein are frankly bloody awful, I would very much advise downloading from the midstation rather than skiing down. Back to the skiing, some of the runs are not yet open, primarlily the blacks and the reds on the outer edges of the resort, but the snow that's on the ground, when thick enough, is great.

ok, tomorrow's the staff day off so we need recommendations of a place to eat - pizza is fine - and where to ski - is Graukogel worth a trip? It'll be either there or sportgastein I think, all advice is appreciated

only two pistes open in sportgastein so definitely not going up there - think they're saving the snow for when the lower areas begin to struggle! Graukogel looks to be mostly open including the "skiroute", so might well give that a spin tomorrow unless I remember to check back later and see someone with contrary advice. Need to check which bus to get, from what I can work out there's a bus at 9.11am from outside the station, and only a couple of buses back again...

Great day skiing the Wagrain-Alpendorf runs today with Frosty the Snowman and his amazing group of rugby fans! Snow is in really good nick if a little grippy later in the day now the temperatures are hovering above freezing.

Not many on the slopes and the area is more than capable of absorbing the numbers. Friends who run a ski hire/ski school shop in Wagrain have said that numbers are currently well down so far, but the hordes seem to to be pouring along the A10 as I drove home this evening.

Top to bottom skiing in the Alpendorf-Wagrain-Flachau-Zauchensee areas. I was told that Dorfgastein has a problem holding the snow on the Großarl link, but Großarl itself is in excellent condition. Can't wait for the weekend when I start a 9-day trip based in Radstadt! The first of 2 such trips in January.

Red hot, blue sky day. Skied the sunny side of Kleinarl, Flachauwinkl and zauchensee in the morning and the opposite slopes of the former 2 in the pm. Very warm and Zauch was busy with some nasty hardpack near resort.
It could be rough in the morning if it freezes hard. Some great skiing to be had with a bit of planning.
Paggered again Smile

Graukogel for us today. you can tell it's been a slow start to the season as they;re already badly in need of snow. you can tell temperatures have been high as the freeze thaw cycle has left lots of clag around, and the unpisted snow is feeling very heavy and sticky. Nonetheless an excellent day's skiing as the pisted runs, where not through to bare earth, are in great condition, especially the two blacks. not great as usual on the ski down to the bottom, but better than downloading - not even sure that's possible on the two seater. A nice little resort that's probably a goldmine in snowy conditions, as it looks like it rarely gets busy. Loads of people skinning up though, we reckon we saw more people going uphill on skis than going down!

Frosty the Snowman, Are you going to be around the Ski Amade region on Thursday or Friday? I'm travelling through to St Johann im Pongau tomorrow from my present location in the Zillertal (I'll be staying in Alpendorf) and was hoping to meet up with some of the Snowheads out there. I've pm'd kooky but she can't make Thursday but may be able to make Friday. Samerberg Sue, have you got any ski plans for Thursday or Friday?

Cheers

Samerberg Sue, Haus Schmidt at 21 Alpendorfstrasse - when you replied to my PM a few weeks back you said you'd stayed there and that the ski bus stops right outside the door at the Reithof. wink
Looks like Friday could hopefully be on for both you and possibly kooky then. I'd included my mobile number in the PM I sent you, so if it does look like you are free on the Friday you can text me where and when to meet up.

Alastair Pink, Due to ever changing needs of some of our party it has become increasingly difficult to predict where and when We will be. We hope to start on the Rote 8 tomorrow then move navy to Graffenberg late morning. The weather may be poorer at the end of the week so I suspect We will be in the Graffenberg/Alpendorf area. Will pm you my number. Was hoping to bump into kooky to, but it is a busy time for all.

Pedantica, funny you should say that! I was skiing with my daughter , who rarely skis these days and some huge burly bloke wiped me out from behind, totally crashed into me and left me with most of my equipment spread about and he just glanced at me and skiied off, I was livid. I spent the rest of the afternoon trying to find him, but to no avail. Reminds me why I never usually ski at high peak. My knee is killing me, so I guess I am the third Crying or Very sad

The mid stations here tend to be 1/3 of the way up the hill and We had great snow above there. The Rote8 was fabulous but a drop into Flachau was short lived as it was rammed, scraped and rather frightening.
Flying Mozart was also good. PM was.back up the Graffenberg. Snow.reply nice up here but a few hardpack man-made spots.appearing. gentle slopes usually excellent.
Very vfew bare patches, not as hot as yesterday imho but quite lovely. Nearly met with Alistair Pink but he suffered a navigation error and it was getting late.

Yep, sorry for that error - I reckon I got to the Hachau Alm about 10 mins after I last phoned you, but didn't want to delay you any longer Embarassed So folks, the closest I got to meeting FTS today was this photo taken at the top of the Graffenberg: wink

The return red run from Gernkogel all the way down to Alpendorf also had several patches of hardpack man made spots which made for an interesting descent. Toofy Grin

I'll probably head over to Graffenberg again tomorrow, so if you're in the area again tomorrow FTS give me a text or call Madeye-Smiley

dorgfastein and grossarl for us again today, we had cloud in the valley and it was beautifully clear above. not a great start as the swedish "alpenresor" reps decided to being about 50 of their guests to dorfgastein on the free ski bus, meaning it was a proper scrum to try to get on. in the end, about a dozen people were left as the bus driver refused to take any more people, including four clients and one ski guide from our group! They got a taxi rather than wait for the next bus, but given the massive queues at dorfgastein, it was going on for 11 before we really got going, this was the story of the day, obviously everyone's come out of the christmas coma and they all decided the views from dorfgastein were what they wanted.

snow was variable, pistes very firm and getting polished in places, not particularly enjoyable at times to be honest. nicest run of the day was the mogullled black run no 7 off the top of kreuzkogel, mogulled it may be but it wasn't busy and the snow was great, so we went and did it twice. well some people did,I tried the trees and powder off to the side, and that was lovely

we skiied straight through to 2pm before heading for lunch only to find that the restaurant was rammed, couldn't get a seat outside in the (very warm) sun so we had to eat inside, then when we ordered they said the crowds were so big it was going to be an hour before the food arrived! In the end ours took 25 minutes, the longest wait was 40 minutes. After that no-one had the appetite for much more skiing so we decide to ski to base and get the bus home - once again it was rammed, though everyone did get on, but we had to change at bad hofgastein and a dozen of us failed to get on the first bus. ten minutes wait for a bus where we were more or less guaranteed a seat was not too bad, at least

forecast to cloud over tonight with a sprinkling of snow - 10 to 15 cm over the next couple of days. god knows the pistes need it, if anything they could do with three or four times that amount to get a decent base

A late start for me, met Alistair Pink at 11 up top, very busy, 5 mins at some lifts. An average lunch at the PAnorama at the top of Alpendorf. Snowed most of the day, about 10cm fell. Slopes much quite pm and We had some great skiing above mid station above Grafenberg and Alpendorf. The viz was not great but the trees helped hugely. Snow forecast for the next 3 or 4 days.

Much quieter in Zauchensee/Flachauwinkl today. After yesterday's sun, many of the locals seem to be avoiding today's snow. The fresh snow meant I didn't get too annoyed at the local teenaagers leaving lots of empty seats on the chairs in Flachauwinkl just so they could sit with their mates.

Group vote just now was to heard for Schladming tomorrow. Only decision now is whether to park at Planet Planei or head for one of the peripheral lifts. Suggestions/comments welcome, as I've never skied that area myself.

Stubnerkogel and schlossalm for us today, the queues weren't as bad as yesterday, but the snow was, as yesterday, thin in places and polished on the busy runs. The less frequently used runs, as expected, have better snow, b ut even some of the black runs are getting ropy. good news is the snow has come but bad news is there's not much of it - it's very thin, fine stuff, and by 2pm there was only about 3cm of fresh on the terrace of the Jungerstubl. Having said that the trees above jungerstubl weree brilliant Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Frosty the Snowman, It was good to meet you and your family and associated friends. Also very pleased to meet William (the 17 year old with cerebral palsy who recently did the Coast to Coast Cycle Ride which FTS had posted about on SHs). This time William was hooning down the pistes in his sit-ski (together with his helper behind) at some considerable speed and clearly enjoying it. Very Happy It was a privilege to meet him. Cool

RobW, the main alternative lift up planai is the golden jet gondola, just west of town opposite the hospital. You do need to download back to cast park from mid station but only a short distance and nice views as you ride the gondola. Large car park at golden jet but also at planet planai, though probably quieter via the golden jet.

RobW, if you are coming in from the Radstadt side, why not park up at Reiteralm and ski over to Planai using the links? It is well signposted and will provide you with ample skiing for the day.

Otherwise waynos's idea of parking at the Golden Jet is a good one as it is nearly always quieter than the main Planai uplift in high season.

Just back from Radstadt but skiied mostly in Schladming. Not as busy as I thought it'd be and snow was very good (we were worried at the end of Nov...)

The only green and brown patches we spotted were next to the bottom lift - everything otherwise was pure white!! Great snow (Salzburg closed for a day last week as a result!!). Great skiing conditions. FYI we went with www.321ski.co.uk/Schladming.php for our school ski trip - on our school trip all went well, v happy.

15-20cms at summits, 5-10cm at lower slopes. All lifts open so green lights all round!! Laughing No queues longer than 10 mins, except in ski hire (25mins). Hope this helps!!
