tessaventer, maybe a question out of context in this thread, but how did you break an ankle skiing? In the tame cruisy 'blue land' that is Corvara at that???

agavin, 'fraid so! The usual last run of the day and I wasn't looking where I was going, went off piste and stuck my ski tips in the snow over a ledge and Tom & jerry'd onto the piste! Just goes to show that not all accidents are at high speed...

tessaventer, that's amazing! I would have thought the ski boot was pretty much like having a re-inforced ankle - must have been horrible getting the boot off

agavin, the surgeon back here told me I had a footballer's injury not a skier's injury... all very well but I was on the slopes when it happened! Also because not a lot of English spoken in those parts the doctor in Corvara thought I'd injured my knee and tried to wrench the boot off! ouch

Hi
Interested to see how many of you are so diverse!!
I have only skiied twice:
2003 Borovets - Bulgaria
2004 Borovets - Bulgaria
We were lucky re: snow conditions but having said that we haven't been anywhere else! We like Borovets as a resort and found the locals to be very friendly.
Only 13 days to go and we are off to Morzine and can't wait. Really looking forward to comparing the differences and seeing if the slight increase in cost is worth it.

Hi - just back from Le Seignus (L'Espace Lumiere, Southern French Alps), and stayed in Chalet Vallons, owned by a Snowhead!, but also skied in
Andorra (twice)
Montgenevre
Passo Tonale
Schladming
Bardonecchia twice
Sauze D'oulx
Borovets VERY cheap resort, but hotel/food/snow awful
Waidring twice
Thyon 2000 (desolate ski station in Nendaz area - great snow but dull, dull, dull!)
La Thuile
Les Carroz Lovely little Grand Massif village, good snow but tiny, pokey hotel with nothing but cheese on menu!
Mayrhofen - more times than I can remember and not just because of the gluhwein
Zell am Ziller (ahhh, my first time ever - ski-ing that is)
Auffach (less said the better - bumped from booked resort of Waidring, by tour operator less than a month before going, to Auffach which had not one inch of snow)
Chamonix
Val Thorens
There may be others but time and wine have eradicated the memory

Learnt to ski in Bavaria, courtesy of the British Army on Nato planks ! The resorts of Oberstdorf and garmisch spring to mind as well as a week of cross country sking, the Hertz mountains in germany aswell , for a bit of combined Alpine and grass sking on the Royal Tank Regiments hired skis.
A bit of Nordic camping and skiing in some very cold arctic climes that I would prefer to forget.
Also,
Sameon, Flaine
Serre Cheviallier
Flaine

Alp de Heuz
Kitzbuhl
And sure there is somewhere i have forgot.

Here goes, not a comprehensive ski brochure that many of you have, but I have only been doing it for three and a half seasons!:
2002/3 - Serre Chavalier (6) <New Year >
2004 - Claviere (5.5 - bad knee) <April>
2005 - Borovets (6) <Feb>
2005 - Sestriere (4)/Sauze d'Oulx (2) whilst staying in Bardonecchia <April>
2005 - Soldeu (6 - including skiing over to Pas and El Tarter etc.) <Xmas>
Also up-and-coming this season:
11th Feb - I'm off to Morzine for the week (£480 fully catered 'last' minute deal that I was quite happy with).
8th April - I set off on the joyous journey that is a coach trip to Meribel.

Hmm... Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Saalbach-Hinterglemm and Sheffield. Just getting into it but I've been spoilt for snow so far. Except in Sheffield, which also loses out by not having a double-barrel name. Maybe I can call it Sheffield-Doncaster-Nottingham like the 'Robin Hood' airport

Well, for me, it was the quality and sheer number of hours work that the Austrian instructors put into it at Zell am Zee, on my 2nd trip. That is when I really learned technique.!!. In addition, although I do like Italy and especially the Dolomites area, the main problem with it is the sometimes abysmal snow record and as I tend to book many months in advance it is too much of a risk.

2005/2006 - Notre Dame de Bellecombe (France) - all season!
I think I've been extremely lucky to manage to get such a wonderful traditional resort for my first season. Has anyone else been to Notre Dame? Beautiful Alpine village, massive newly-opened ski area, 99% French guests, very friendly locals, great opportunities to practice the language! It beats any of the larger purpose-built resorts hands down!

My heaviest fall was something very similar /ON PISTE/ going from a slap of ungroomed freshness to groomed at low speed near the top of the Läger chair in Wengen/Grindelwald. Fortunetely i got out of it with just a snowed up pair of goggles and a few secs of dizzyness.
Another nice one was a somewhat similar fall on Grande Motte (Tignes) where only a path 2 bullys wide was groomed at some point which i didn't notice so strayed in softness and went down with tips in the snow
Staying on piste and at low speed is no guarentee nothing will happen.. it may help, but its an extreme sport either way.
