Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

It's the Hartkaiser at the top of the Funicular - looks snowy but I'm pretty sure it is not open yet

This links you to the webcam page for Söll at snow-forecast.com: http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Soll/webcams/latest

markP, forecasts are looking pretty good in terms of temperatures, but the mountain weather forecasts really aren't reliable for longer than 2/3 days at the outside.

Thanks Sue, no I don't think it's open yet. I've been checking the webcams, and they have got a lot better over the last week or so, I'm still not sure over the depth.

Still got 18 days (and counting) before I head out.

Samerberg Sue, so sorry to hear that you're cutting it short, what a shame Sad But sounds like the conditions are great! snowHead

rayscoops, I hope you're having to do warm up exercises before you start! snowHead Sounds like you're having a great time Very Happy

stevev - I've skied in Kitzbuhel, just down the road, with 9 cm on the upper slopes. 15cm would have been a luxury! It really doesn't take much cover to be able to ski when there's meadowland underfoot rather than rocks.

Just back from Ischgl. The snow was actually surprisingly good over the week-end thanks to some fresh during the week. Higher up there was plenty of deep powder to be had. It was awesome. Some areas were a bit icy, the home runs/low runs were a bit bare but the vast majority of the area was in very good condition.
On monday it was already getting a bit soft though so I'd imagine there 'll be a bit more ice around in the mornings this week..

Kruisler, but more snow is predicted this week which would top things up a bit for those lucky enough to be heading out soon.

Coincidentally I am also just back from Ischgl and considering that this season has not got off to the best of starts, you really could not fault the conditions out there. The fresh snow which arrived on Friday allowed the home runs to be officially opened from Saturday, just in time. We were able to ski back to town on all 3 days there, twice back to the Fimba/Pardatch area and once directly into the nice little bar at the side of the Schloss hotel. Some great off pite at higher elevations, much of it untracked. Conditions on most of the pistes really good, firm and hard packed, allowed for excellent high speed cruising down blacks 21, 21, 33, 34 and most of the reds in that area - what a way to see out 2009ski.

Some friends who were spending the weekend in St Anton came over to Ischgl to ski as the conditions over there were described as patchy.

Now let's hope the snow gods of the Kitz arena deliver in copious quantities ahead of our trip there at the end of Jan. Bring on 2010.

If you are looking for long steep on piste runs you can't go far wrong from the top of Palinkopf, 20 and 21 steep and on the other side 34, 38, 41 (and variations) very long!

Agree with nozawaonsen, anything from Palinkopf but also runs from Greitspitz 13 and 14a - none of these are frighteningly steep, but all have a good consistent gradient and are nice and wide, plus lots of fresh off to the side if you fancy some variety. If youlike fast carving you can't get much better, although deeper into the season some of these may get bumped up. We didn't ski 72 or 4 so can't comment on those.

Hope this changes but, looking decidedly chilly for next week-end when a lot of people descend on Austria (me included). Just looked at Snow Forecast for Kitzbuhel and it is saying that next friday 18th we're looking at -29 on the mountain (-40 with windchill). Inaccuracies of forecasting aside, that's unpleasantly cold if it turns out to be true. Anyone on the ground out there got a local view?

I'm heading to Austria on Monday. Hopefully the east will be pounded. Can anyone translate this for me?:

n the mountains it is wintry. It is snowing along the north nightmares till Saturday 30 to 50 cms of fresh snowfall are possible, in the Innergebirg less. On the unstable base of the cold fresh snowfall of the last week it can come in the Steilgelände of the high-level positions for the departure of loose snow departures and single snowy boards, in higher positions a dust interest is also possible.
Driven judgement:

In the Lungau the departure readiness is much lower.
he snowy covers construction:
The snowy cover is loose by the sunk temperatures of the last time by heights highly 2400 ms and coldly with some unstable interlayers. The last snowfall has brought in the north nightmares approx. 20 cms of fresh snowfall with lively northwest wind, to inden tanners these were 15 cms. Before it had in both days before 20 cms loosen and in the high-level positions at that time very cold fresh snowfall with low density given.

DDas Weather:
In the mountains it is foggy and wintry. It is snowing longer persistently. In the north nightmares it is snowing hard, to the south less intensely. Along the north nightmares are possible till Saturday for 30 to 50 cms of fresh snowfall. In the high-level positions the stormy wind which will decrease in the afternoon, however blows partly. I was browsing the German Alpinforum and came across two trip reports with some nice photos taken yesterday (10th Dec) at Hauser Kaibling near Schladming and Schlick2000 in the Stubai valley near Innsbruck:

Here are a couple of photos I've cribbed to show the snowcover and piste conditions:

1. Hauser Kaibling, upper mountain has good snow, snow cannons at work, winter has yet to reach the valley:

2. View from the 4-man chair at Schlick2000, looks a really pretty ski area:

Snowed heavily in Ischgl yesterday evening. About 20cm+ fresh on the mountain. Lovely, light and dry. Plenty of powder to play in, though as the base is still not that deep be careful as the rocks are not always that far below. Looks set to stay cold! Very Happy

Skied Zauchensee and had the place literally to myself til about 10ish when it started getting quite busy. Very cold ( -13) but snow was a dream, hard pistes, very grippy. Looked like madness over in Flachau today, pistes really busy, if anyone is coming over this way it may be worth the trip up the hill to Zauchensee.

A bit more snow arrived in Ischgl on Saturday evening. About 5cm on the mountain. Since then the cold and lack of wind have kept the powder in excellent condition, soft and light. Several small natural slides though and one slab slide triggered it looked by skiers or borders, wouldnt have liked to have been beneath it. Pistes are looking great too, though the final runs into town are quite shabby by the end of the day.

Ischgl was great on Saturday, a bit foggy, but great snow. Really deep new snow which was unexpected. Best advice is to stay on the top area, the valley runs were long, and a bit scraped off in places.

It is all set in around here now! Radstadt has seen a large dump overnight and the snow is still falling and it looks as if it is here to stay!
Zauchensee was great yesterday. As DAB has said nice and grippy with fresh sitting on top. Off piste was great fun too - just the occasional argument with a rock but champagne powder from top to bottom!
