Oh my god..........! Just back from six days far away. The snow in Morzine village is incredible. At least 60cms in my garden. More like a very snowy Jan week than mid Dec. Off up tomorrow for a bit of a ski. Looking at the gfs it looks like another big dump from Sunday. Running out of places to shovel it all.

Skied on Friday with Roy Hockley, Mrs Roy Hockley and Steve (arch lurker here).
Absolutely epic conditions, although not a lot was running - the lift up from Ardent; the lifts in the Linderats bowl and the runs down from Prodains (return via the cable car). Fornet, Hautes Forts and the links were all stubbonly closed.
Steve and I managed an uninterrupted run from the top of Prolays down to the Ardent car park. Absolutely uninterrupted. Magic.
Mrs Roy Hockley is a very handy skier. And full marks to Roy Hockley for trusting him enough to take him down through the Christmas trees

Standee, I'm currently in the 3Vs and the risk here is 3, so I'd imagine the risk is similar around the PDS.

Indeed the Dobermann SLR's were fab and a great allround ski. I just need to find myself a pair.
As for the cowboy hat; looking forward to seeing you in your full brokeback mountain gear!

FlyingStantoni, Just come back from P-d-S - stayed in Ardent. Fabulous snow and all the pistes on the Avoriaz side appeared to be open. We particularly loved the Chatel area. Tried to ski in Morzine yesterday but the majority of the lifts were closed.

Quite disappointing how little has been open this week in the PdS - particularly when you see how much other areas have opened up ahead of schedule on the back of the great snow. I have had a moan to the powers that be in Les Gets and told them they are missing out on trade because of it. Not expecting any change in the future though!

Went for a little tour up the Valley de La Manche, 1m of snow at 1300m is a phenomenal start. Pictures and report here http://www.chaletgeorge.com

ctskifam, how much trade do you think they're missing out on? Compared to mid-feb? bear also in mind that one reason for not opening is the seasonal workers contract system. The people to open the lifts everyday haven't necessarily even arrived in resort yet.

My friend Steve, who is staying at our place, sent me a text earlier with reports of knee+ deep powder. And that was where he could safely ski on his own.
I'm in resort on Saturday and Sunday if any of the locals fancy a ski or beer.

I'm back in Morzine from the 3 Valleys. There's definitely more snow in Les Gets than in Meribel - a good consolidated metre at the side of the road in resort.
Friends I spoke to earlier asked me to report that "it's poo-poo here and that you should all stay away".
In all seriousness, it's probably the best snow I've seen in resort. Proper report tomorrow.

Out skiing today with zzz, Mrszzz and stevej.
A much more mixed bag to report than I'd otherwise like to.
The pistes are generally superb. Probably the best I've ever seen them. Great coverage, near zero wear. If you're a piste-hooooooooning type then you're going to have a fab time.
The off-piste is an altogether different situation. Whilst not as bad as the 3 Valleys, the off-piste has obviously been wind affected. And anything that isn't wind affected is probably wind slab.
There are also glide cracks on slopes of nearly every aspect - some of which have turned into avalanches. Some of which are probably just waiting for some dozy idiot to ski or board on them. To give you an idea of the extent of this, there's a ruddy great glide crack on the Swiss Wall. (The Wall is open, but going to get very nasty as the glide crack is about half way down and in the middle of the run).
A word of warning - "Piste Ferme" really should be taken as just that in the current conditions. For example, La Casse Noisette (one of the reds down into Plaine Dranse) has partially slid. You would have a really bad time if you ducked the rope.
Personally, I'm avoiding the off-piste for the foreseeable.
