Breaking News.........................Breaking News........................Breaking News.......................
The SCGB have credited snowHeads as their source for a news story -
http://www.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/news/story.asp?intStoryID=5362
With the ubiquitous "(c/o snowheads.com)" - while a link to our item would have been nicest (and arguably the right thing netiquette-wise), this is definitely a huge step in the right direction.
Dare we hope that this is indicative of a more polite SCGB news policy in the future?

admin, that story was broken by Associated Press in Salt Lake City 16 hours ago, who syndicated it to various news sites. The photo is, it seems, the property of Freeskier and was taken by Tom Winter.
snowHeads News exists, as it always has done, thanks to news search engines, journalists and publishers around the world.
Credit where credit's due!
Do you have any comments on the points I raised on page 5 of this thread? Your response would be appreciated. I have responded, for my part, to the points raised by ise, achilles and Elizabeth.

Indeed. They (eventually) linked to Winterhighland but maybe they don't think Snowheads are as important... or maybe they feel more threatened by you?
They have to be careful though, they wouldn't want to lose "the largest market of skiers and snowboarders in the UK" or their "extremely loyal following, of over 1.5 million skiers and boarders" (where the hell do that lot ski?).

You know it makes sense.

You wouldn't regard admin's points above as 'adspin'?
The most amazing thing about this is that the SCGB didn't simply go through the same search process as snowHeads and credit the story to source ...
... and let's not forget that this story concerns the death of an athlete, whose family's grief will be overwhelming right now.

There is still no link to Winterhighland website or Highland Instinct just a credit to the photographers as individuals

Sorry... on the earlier articles (here) there are links... albeit only those horrid redirected lets-try-not-to-pass-on-page-rank (we like this site, but not enough to put a proper link to it) links.

Looks like a full-sized link to me. Size won't affect page rank anyway, AFIK. A nofollw attribute would be another matter, but I don't see it in the link.

J2Dave, am I right in saying that you're a commercial rival of the SCGB?
If so, what's your policy on things like hot-linking, linking, contributor copyright and so on?
[No need to spell it out - a link to your terms and conditions would be fine]

Dave, apologies to you, Stanley Kubrick and others, but I can't resist this:
------------------
HAL*: By the way, do you mind if I ask you a personal question?
Dave: No, not at all.
HAL: Well, forgive me for being so inquisitive but during the past few weeks, I've wondered whether you might be having some second thoughts about the mission.
Dave: How do you mean?
HAL: Well, it's rather difficult to define. Perhaps I'm just projecting my own concern about it. I know I've never completely freed myself of the suspicion that there are some extremely odd things about this mission. I'm sure you'll agree there's some truth in what I say.
Dave: Well, I don't know. That's rather a difficult question to answer.
HAL: You don't mind talking about it, do you Dave?
Dave: No, not at all.
... continues
* err ... I guess that's me, for the moment

J2Dave, Please stop the double line spacing. There's no need. It's a waste of errrr... Internet space. Yep, that's it. Anyway, just checked the diary (in anticipation of this going all the way to the magic 20) and I have earmarked the 25th December 2018 as a possible date for the aforementioned streak. If you had a copy of my Ts&Cs you'll note this is well within the time limit.

Hmm. I do see what you mean. Nothing like rubbishing the opposition if you can get away with it.
As for the j2ski's t&c's well, there's nuffink I can see except this hopeful escape caveat:
Quote: |
Warning:-The information on j2ski.com, where not clearly factual, is opinion only. It is not definitive, nor is it exhaustive and you must confirm it for yourself before you act upon it. Wherever and whenever you decide to ski, you do so entirely at your own risk. Skiing is an action sport with many dangers, which you must identify and accept before participating.
If you do not accept these risks and your responsibility for understanding them - please do not ski. |
So I guess the Law of England and Wales applies in full.

achilles, as it would anyway with or without the warning.
I feel compelled to say this... J2Dave runs a good honest website with no side to it; no PR machine, no pseudo-green agenda, no copyright theft, no flakiness, no reps, no AGM, no claims of mass TV audiences, no baa-lamb munching Saabs, no "little bit pregnant" off-piste, no fancy balls, no "secretly sponsored" editorial, no heli-skiing eco-warrior journos, no poncing about, no scandal... You go there, you find some info, a snow report or a link, you act upon it or not, you don't threaten to sue everyone, you crack open a beer and go skiing or boarding somewhere. His site ranks really well on Google. (Apoligies J2Dave if I got anything wrong )
achilles, I accuse you of diversionary tactics. Very naughty. They should pay YOU to be a member.
I'll be taking the rest of the evening off.

Swiller, I nipped over to j2ski.com to have a fresh look at the site (hadn't been there for about a year), in view of your passionate prose. It's a helpful-looking site. For some reason I went straight to the forum terms and conditions which are, indeed, remarkably straight and well-composed:
Quote: |
You are over the age of 13 years.
Commercial Posts Related to Snow Sports must be low-key (in our opinion) and of genuine interest to our community.
Links from posts to external websites must be ski-related. If you wish to place a link to your site (from a post or signature) then you are expected to return the favour.
Commercial Posts Not Related to Snow Sports - are not permitted.
You will be Cool - you will not post anything knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, hateful, harassing, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or illegal.
You will respect Copyright - you may not post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or by j2ski.
We will respect your Copyright - copyright of all original material posted remains the intellectual property of the poster.
You allow us Fair Use - by posting material that you own, you grant j2ski an un-limited license for its public reproduction on this Web Site.
You Accept - that we cannot constantly monitor posted messages. We do not vouch for or warrant the accuracy, completeness or usefulness of any message, and are not responsible for the contents of any message.
The messages express the views of the authors, not the views of j2ski or any entity associated with j2ski.
This is not a Democracy - we may, at any time and without notice, edit or delete any post we consider to violate the above rules (or any other rule we may make up from time to time). Repeat Offenders may be restricted or banned without notice, explanation or right of appeal.
You are solely responsible for the content of your messages, and you agree to indemnify and hold j2ski and our personnel harmless with respect to any claim based upon transmission of your or other's messages. We reserve the right to reveal your identity (or whatever information we know about you) in the event of legal action arising from any message posted by you. |
So the terms are upfront in full, before registration. Not hidden in a corner of the site at the time of registration. That's how it should be.
J2Dave didn't do himself justice by coming over and slagging off the Skeeb. There's clear depth to the man.

David Goldsmith, achilles, calm down guys - at no point have I slagged off the SCGB ("the Skeeb" has a nice friendly ring to it DG - you should protect that...) or their excellent website. I took a wee dig at some of their marketing claims but you've no need to feel so threatened by that.
Going back to the original subject of the thread (yes, llamas)... if "the Skeeb" are now going to start crediting Snowheads for material they find on here then that's a good thing, no?
And back again (forward? Jeez I'm starting to sound like DG!) to the new purpose of the thread... the Swiller Challenge! (oh, he's gone).
BTW, as a gesture of goodwill I'll give you both free membership to "my club", for which the only requirement is that we "crack open a beer and go skiing or boarding somewhere" (thank you Mr Swiller).

Hmm, there are some sheep in the field over the road and I could try and squeeze one into my petrol tank - would that count?
But I'm afraid I did get unreasonably excited when Vicky Butler-Henderson was hacking that bright orange Lotus Exige round the track on Fifth Gear the other night... so there go my green credentials I'm afraid. I prefer Orange anyway - Green is for losers...
