This site is fantastic !!! You ask a couple of questions, not only do you get answers straight away, you also get the feeling that people really want you to go and enjoy yourself.
As for the trip, i have skied before but 20 yrs ago. Kids have only had 4 lessons at xscape but they are up to level 5 already. My only real worry is fitness. I am a hefty fellow of 18 stone. I cope quite easily on a 2 hr session at xscape but not sure how Im going to hold up over a week.Pace myself is the main guess.
Also if i knacker myself up , thats going to ruin it for the kids as we are leaving mum at home and if Im laid up anywhere they will have to be with me as they are too young to go on their own.
Thanks for all your help again

tommy10pages, the best thing is to do the first 2 legs of the green and then come onto the Valentin just below half way. It's fairly steep for about 3 turns and then shelves off. When you're happy with that one you could try the Diable which isn't so steep but is much longer. I'd advise against attacking the Valentin from the top until you're really confident. If it's deep snow you'd be OK though.

Big Rich, Frostie's not wrong, the smoother your skiing, the way less energy exerted. About holiday three or four I found out that I was not fighting the snow/gravity with brute force any more, but it was actually my friend and helping me to turn and shape my descent.
A few sharpener lessons might take the ordeal out of skiing for long periods. You should be able to get to a point where you do a couple of reds, get tired, then turn onto some blues and greens for a slower, calm down period. I call it resting skiing. I don't know if the pros have a name for it
After all if you can ski while retaining some energy and power in your 'locker', you'll be a safer skier as you'll be able to turn up the leg power to get yourself out of a situation if one presents itself.

Otherwise it'll be skiing down that long green at the end of each day and then traversing across the flat stuff at the bottom, like last time. Chalet's in the Venosc end of the town too |

If I recall correctly from a couple of years ago, if you go onto the Valentin at the point easiski mentions, about 2 or 3 turns below that there is a path which cuts off to the left and enables you to ski most of the way to the Venosc end of the town.
Some of you may be able to confirm if this is correct or not.

MhicEasmuint, ahah! The fabled path back to town - I'll have a scout for it when I'm there. I'm sure the boarders I'm going with will have to get the Diable lift down, they won't like the flat stuff

Big Rich, in laymans terms - skiability level 4 ,30-40% of the area is open - snow coverage, lots of snow everywhere

There's a big storm coming. the problem will be too much wind I think. It was nasty at the glacier today. Freezing snow on the goggles meant that after 3 turns you couldn't see anything at all (and I mean anything. The snow was fine, and we skied slowly down to the Cretes in varying stages of poor to nil visibility. At the Cretes it was damp, and the snow on the Valentin was fairly wet but easy to ski. It seems to be getting a bit colder, and the lower level rain should turn to snow soon with a bit of luck. I didn't take a pic 'cos you couldn't see anything!

Forgive my niaveness... but does it look like we are setting up for good conditions come the 16th (my first piste day!). If the forecasts are to be believed (theres that niavity again) then it should throw down up to 80cm of snow, then be cold and clear until our arrival. By this stage will the snow that was dumped be ice and rubbish for skiing or have the snowgods smiled upon my efforts?

peter.holland, It depends entirely how cold it is. There is unlikely to be ice in the village unless it's very warm. there is very unlikely to be ice anywhere above the village anyway. The glacier during th Mondial is a bit different because it doesn't always snow much before the end of October!

easiski,
thanks for the lesson, and the help when down the hill!
For the next one I hope that the conditions will be conducive to seeing my hand in front of my face, let alone anything of the piste.

Can't wait till the 1st week of Feb when I go to ADH which being close to LDA should have similar snow. Have found a great 360 degrees webcam for that resort at http://www.alpedhuez.com/webcam/index.html?lang=fr (currently the Signal one is online) which is another thing to check obsessively twice a day for almost 2 months

Nasty old day today, more snow, some sleet etc down here at the cliff edge. Very high winds at the top though (90kph) so I'm not sure about the powder situation. Those of you who met Michael at the PSB - it's his 50th today, so I'm off to a gathering just now.

sounds a much better idea than off up the mountain. Sounds deeply unpleasant. Have a nice day; gather your shovelling muscles...
