Just watched it back again with my 18 year old and we both came to the same conclusion
Now although my son is a much faster skier than me, I still do not think he has the ability of Graham Bell. But we both thought Graham Bell's tour was a walk in the park and if the transport from resort to resort was laid on and he did not have to Faf about waiting for a lift off the Chalet girls and more critically the Vanoise Express was open, surely the challenge should have been can this tour (Graham's certainly not Ed's) be done in 1 day.
I'm pretty sure that Villroger to Champagny took me about 2 1/2 hours one day last year (OK no lift Q's ) and I am far from an Ex Downhill racer.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Ordhan, agree. The Beeb wouldn't embark on such a venture without the assistance of the local tourist boards... who will have told them. The "race" was clearly very staged - Bell started off with a pair of skier cross skis that magically turned into a pair of GS... the so-called "wager" was struck in the presence of the very guides that they used and Bell's camera men we're not too slick on their boards so he would have had to go at their pace.
Still quite an entertaining hour though. Just wish Mr Bell would stop constantly reminding us that he was once a DH racer. Thought the ending of his "trek" was all a bit corny. |
Bode Swiller, I thought that but if you re run it, he is carrying the cameraman's skis, the SX11's

Just wanted to belatedly say that I really enjoyed the whole series. I'm an intermediate skier. If you want ski racing there are plenty of other places to watch that. This programme was more unique and covered a whole range of things and I loved it. In fact, I wouldn't have minded a short section covering different resorts and more tips on improving technique but there you go. Its a great show and I hope many others agree.

If Belly caught a lift from Peisey to Montchavin area, and was spending the night in Plagne Centre, then what the chuff was he doing on the top of the Roche de Mio as the last lift closed

Frosty the Snowman, if Jeremy Clarkson was driving a Bugatti Veyron through the french countryside at warp speed how the chuff did the camera car get ahead all the time to get footage? All smoke & mirrors for our entertainment.

There may be other places to watch ski racing (eg Eurosport, in between the crucial lacrosse and greek league footie ) but what about ski and boarder X? Our two girl boarders have had a pretty decent season, but not a glimpse of it anywhere...

He is.
I met him a couple of times when he was still competing, when I happened to be using the same changing rooms at Sophia Gardens when he was training there.

I thought that when Ed "missed" his plane in Delhi to get to the Hymalayas resort a few weeks back. It's amazing how the camera crew got there in time to set up and film him running in and up to the check-in desk, and were immediately on hand to film him getting into the taxi subsequently.
Whilst I'm here, the BBC should make Graham Bell do the Tour of Mont Blanc in early autumn, carrying all his kit. (Tent, cooker, etc.) A few mornings of grinding along with half a ton of frozen condensation on the flysheet in his backpack would wipe the smile from his face - it certainly did mine when I did the Tour in a cold snap.
