[quote="Mrs NBT"]Sadly as we all know shoulders are complicated body parts.
A doctor friend says scans aren't taken at first because the picture is too grainy and not much information can be gained. My 'small' complaint was, why didn't they book me in for one, knowing it's a 9 week 'ish' wait.
Anyway I've been lucky enough to speak to a private physiotherapist this morning and am going to get a private scan. She asked me lots of questions and feels if I have got a tear it's probably minor.
@dan100, The tip regarding taking your arm up the back is great. I'm able to do this movement with very little pain (only discomfort) now, which is confident inspiring.
Glad you have got a scan lined up sometimes peace of mid is worth the cost. My understanding is if it is a minor tear they won’t intervene anyway. If I have discomfort It’s only usually when I am pushing it with the exercise. I was warned that full recovery can take 12 months.

@dan100, Thank you. My recovery has been calculated at 18 months, but the physio thinks about 13, (only another 10 months to go).

I think I’m going to give my shoulder a rest for a few days from exercises designed to improve the reach behind my back. It does hurt when I lift my hand away from the small of my back, though I can do it and I do have a bit more reach vertically-to [ahem! ] just about bra strap level, but not enough to scratch the opposite shoulder blade.
Once I get back home I’ll book myself into another physio session. Hoping this doesn’t lead to more scans etc. Everything else is pretty good.

@Frosty the Snowman, That's great news that you felt great after 8 months, especially considering your injury was very bad.
My physio told me not to compare with others with the same injury as we're all different.
Have any of you come across (mostly non-skiers) people who think you shouldn't ski again after your accident? I'm getting a bit fed up with being told how dangerous skiing is, how it doesn't do you any good and there are no benefits to skiing.

@Mrs NBT, non of my significant injuries have been anything to do with skiing.
I've only ever had positive viewpoints from folks when recovering.

@dan100, Thanks Dan - and everyone else. I’ve been seeing Simon White but Tim Mathews was in clinic on one of my appointments & had a look at my x-rays & he advised yesterday as well! If I do end up needing an op I think I’ll be going to him. Apparently non-union of where my # occured is quite common - quite high up, close to the shoulder - especially in the over 60s, a club that now includes me

I’m doing ok, though during the weekend my shoulder at the back of my armpit and on top was aching. I put it down to a long drive back from France, overdoing some exercises on Friday and gardening on Sunday. It’s settled down, though another long drive today probably doesn’t help. I had tense shoulders pre accident and I think old habits are returning. I’m struggling to fit physio appointments around work.
@Scarletgirl, what a nuisance. I’m in the sub 60 club (just). I’ve been sent an appointment for a bone density scan , which I can only assume was triggered by my brief visit to A&E and the virtual fracture clinic seeing my original x-rays in early December. It will be interesting to see the result-there’s a history of osteoporosis on the paternal side of my family, though I don’t think I’ve inherited it (or no signs as yet!).

Well on the plus side I’m off to Tignes tomorrow and will be skiing. On the negative side I’ve plateaued in terms of recovering full range for the last couple of weeks. Will reassess when I get back. Physio wants me to have another scan so she can be sure it’s sensible to push me

@Scarletgirl, I really feel for you. Lets hope you do start to mend and don't need an op.
My recovery isn't going as well as hoped. The private physiotherapist admitted yesterday that she thought my injury was so bad that it would take more than 18 months to get anywhere. I am so grateful for the fact I'm able to see her (the treatment is very painful and yesterday I ended up with acupuncture). I'm now much improved and have been put onto some tiny weight exercises. I'm seeing a private consultant in early May to see if I need surgery. The wait for an MRI scan is 9 weeks, so I'm hoping I can get one sooner privately. It's not knowing that's doing my head in, also being over 60 everything takes longer to heal and the fear of not being able to ski next season fills me with dread.
I really hope everyone can keep their chins up and we can all make a good recovery, oh and take those vit D tablets

@Perty, Balancing doing enough but not too much is so difficult! Will be interesting to see what the bone density scan shows.
@dan100, Hope you have a great time in Tignes & some safe skiing!
@Mrs NBT, Thank you! I hope you get some answers soon and yes, being over 60 certainly seems to be an added complication to healing!
Fingers crossed that by the end of the year, we’ll all be fit & healthy & booking our skiings holidays once again

Well skiing today wasn’t stylish or elegant. I was definitely skiing defensively this morning in poor vis. We were all set to go in at 2 and got back to tignes from val and the light improved. I certainly wasn’t trying to ski flat out Shoulder was ok. My problems are upper range. I also wore body armour.

Had a great day yesterday with conditions on piste superb.
Shoulder is fine skiing which is good news. It’s aching a little at night but that’s down to a hideous mattress
I bought demon connect d30 from absolute snow. It has good protection on shoulders. Have left the back protector in though hopefully that won’t be needed. Just treating it as a mid layer.

Perry have a look at the absolute snow website - don’t know whether the female models cope with curves but there is a decent range.
Conditions have been fairly epic this morning son has dragged me down knee deep powder on piste. Not sure that I’m skiing with him - he’s so far ahead. Shoulder still holding up

@dan100, thanks…I think I saw the demon women’s top online on previous searches. £184 -owch! It might work as I now see the chest protection bit looks adjustable, I suppose I could order one and find out. It would help if there were images of someone actually wearing it. The range available for blokes is vast compared with the female options. Given how many younger women are having success in the freestyle world, it would be nice to think there was more of a market these days. (Not that I’m one of those! )

Perry I was lucky I had last seasons model in the sale. It’s pretty cold so it’s not bothering me wearing it. Suspect it might be a little sweaty if it was hot. Find it comfortable and have left back protector in.

@Perty, and @dan100, thanks for the information regarding the body armour. I suppose it's the usual story of fewer items such as these for sale for females, it's the same with mtbiking.

Well the good news is that I managed a whole week of skiing and given that I was playing catch up with my son all week I wasn’t taking it easy and was skiing as hard as I ever do after the first couple of days. Shoulder held up really well though is aching a little today. Still needs rehab as range and strength still needed. I am trying to persuade the other half to bring the car out for her as she plans a long road trip home with our son who has been working out in tignes but in reality I think that’s the end of my skiing for the year. While I was supposed to have had 4 weeks skiing this year I did view this week as a bonus given shoulder specialist said no chance and don’t think my physio was that happy either. It seems a mixed bag on recoveries - Perty and I have recovered enough to ski after 14-15 weeks whereas others seem to be having challenges which I hope are soon overcome. I suspect I have a few months of rehab still to come and may have a scan to check out the rotator cuff.
In terms of the review of body armour - I found it perfectly comfortable to wear the demon d30 connect body armour. This was full protection including a back protector. I had intended to remove this but found it perfectly comfortable to ski in and as am not getting any younger at 53 seems to harm in leaving it in. The only caveat it’s been unseasonably cold and I wonder whether it might get too sweaty on a very hot March day. I might be tempted then to take out the back protector in that situation. My instinct is after a collar bone and shoulder break in 14 years is I will keep on wearing the body armour it for the shoulder and arm protection even if the back protector comes out when it is too warm.
Fingers crossed for improvements in the shoulder. Want to start playing golf soon.

@Perty, oh no, that's crap, but do try to embrace the wonders of modern medication, that definitely shouldn't imply that you're giving in. Good luck!

@Perty, not great news but good that they've caught it. Mrs NBT was diagnosed with osteopenia (the precursor to osteoporosis) several years ago after a broken hip: like you, the nature of the accident meant there was a major mechanical element to the break anyway. That diagnosis was some years later upgraded to full osteoporosis after a subsequent dexa scan. We continued to ski (declaring the diagnosis on insurance forms) and Mrs NBT took alendronic acid tablets weekly for treatment - they have their own side effects which we were not told about at the time, but they did work and at the last dexa scan her diagnosis was downgraded and she's no longer on medication. Hopefully this will work for you too
