Had a great day at Flaine today, sunshine and blue skies and nice fresh snow up top. It's still mostly officially closed, although plenty of folks getting fresh tracks down the closed runs. Powder was heavy and very fun up on top. Queues at DMC were long all day - we made the mistake of taking it up the first time and probably waited for nearly an hour, even in the express lane. To be fair it seemed to have been stopped for a good portion of that hour for some reason. After that we stuck to laps up top and the sieges when we did drop back down to the village. Despite the line at DMC the mountain didn't feel too crowded, and we never waited at any of the telesieges.
The snow down low is still quite thin, but lightyears better than last week obviously. You can actually ski on snow all the way back to the base now, although it's icy in parts from the blowers and there are small rocks and pebbles mixed in.
All in all a good report - now if we had 7 more nights like last night we'd be all set.

Can concur with the above! Arrived on Saturday and happy days so far!!! Hoping they get a few more lifts and some of the drag lifts to open up soon before we leave.
But can’t complain at all considering the doom and gloom prior to last week

Flaine very good yesterday, but only half lifts/pistes open, and snow low down still thin. Will quickly wear down if traffic picks up.

Links opening tomorrow, but hard to see many pistes open above Les Carroz, even though there must be snow up high?

@BAN, according to les carroz instagram feed, (why they put it all on there no idea, you have to cycle through the photos) Plein soleil, combe and timalets will all be closed and you have to download down the gondola. The beginners area at the top will be open and I assume the blue run down to molliets / tete des saix chairs and green from the top of molliets to get back to the gondola.
so not much, but its a start...........
|
|
|
|
|
|
@zorrac, thanks for that! Looks like one can ski from Tete des Saix down to Morillon, however getting back looks like a complete schlep!

@BAN, Now on les carroz website, and slightly different to above, looks like molliets chair will not be open, and you have to come down perce neige down the ridge to get back.
Website:
Slopes : Portet, Marmottes, Blanchot, Perce neige, Coin Coin, Molliachets.
Ski lifts : Kédeuze gondola, Tête des Saix chairlift, Carpet and Crêtes ski lift.
Connections : Les Carroz > Flaine and Samoëns.
The snow cover is not sufficient on the slopes of Combe and Timalets, the return must be done by cable car.
The shuttle service for Flaine is maintained this Wednesday, January 11 (timetables below). As soon as the links reopen on Thursday 12 January, the skibus service will return to normal, with inter-station rotations only.
Shuttles for Flaine until January 11:
Gondola: 8:15 a.m. – 9:55 a.m. – 11:25 a.m.
Tourist Office: 8:20 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Return from Flaine: 12.15 p.m. – 3 p.m. – 4.30 p.m.

Morning - staying in Flaine (at the Totem) for a few nights in a couple of weeks. 3rd visit to the resort and have started looking at restaurant options. I've eaten at L'Ancolie and Le Michet before - really enjoyable meals. Any other recommendations from those in the know? Thanks

Yup, had a decent half day skiing up high again at Flaine today, although we bailed about 14:00 because vis was so bad up top. Unfortunately it was raining and 3 degrees when we got back to the parking lot... it actually changed to snow about 14:30 or so, and there was a bit of snow on the road up and over the col. Definitely rain below 1500.
Flaine was thin up high in a few well traveled spots, much more so than yesterday. We need a cold snap and some more precip, stat!

Been snowing heavily in Flaine down to village level which is great news. Looks like rain in the lower resorts on the webcams, snow on the piste in Morillon 1100 has pretty much gone down to grass in some places, hopefully they can rescue it

What cuisine do you like?
1967 good for steak/meat lovers.
Sabaudia lively and good standard of cooking.
Restaurants at Montsoleil pretty good, too.

Thursday 12th Jan
Travelled up the gondola in les carroz, v quiet, and down to tete de saix the snow was pretty good, a few stones etc, but ok. Travelled down to vernant lift, and apart from a few thin bits on the last pitch, and getting blasted by the cannon it was fine, if a bit bumpy. Tourmaline was far to busy as normal, but survived. Then did repeated loops (lots) top of faust and the other red down to D.Noir chair. Snow was excellent, but light was rather flat. Back to Grand Vans, and ski back to les carroz which is a bit of a slep, as down portet, which was a bit icy, a bit rocky but ok in a ish sort of way, then tete de saix chair and the ridge run back to the top of molliets, then back to Gondola and down it. Snow generally was v good, better than I thought it would be.

Thanks for the report on the link! Fingers crossed this storm comes in next week and we won't have to worry about the stones and low snow for a bit. Those laps up top are exactly what we've been doing, and while not very diverse, it's been fun.

Has anyone been dropping into Gers? Much of that descent is over 2000m so assume the snow must be good there? But maybe difficult to get out again if drag not working... any word when that will open?

Les Cascades closed, so no easy exit. Quite a long way to skin out of?

@BAN, thought as much. There must be enough snow to run drag now, but presumably pisteurs prioritising other runs around resort before doing any preparatory work there

@peanuthead, They may only run it at weekends? when gers finally does open, as that is what les carroz is doing with some lifts.
From les carroz website concerning tomorrow
The latest snowfalls and the work of the ski area teams now allow the Grand Massif to reopen. In anticipation of opening from Saturday 14 January:
Slopes : Coin Coin, Molliachets, Blanchot, Combe (top), Plein soleil (top), Arête, Biollaire (top), Marmottes, Darbon, Perce Neige, Portet.
Ski lifts : Kédeuze gondola, Tête des Saix chairlift, Crêtes carpet and ski lift, Plein Soleil ski lift, Gron chairlift, Molliets chairlift (only Saturday/Sunday outside school holidays).
Connections : Les Carroz > Flaine, Samoëns and Morillon.
The return to the resort must be done by cable car.

@zorrac - thanks for above post from LC.
What was today like?
On Thurs sounds like I did same as you, lapping D.Noir, snow was excellent first thing. Skipped today as had some other things to do and expected it to be a whiteout but by afternoon looked like it may have cleared and been ok. Was there any new fresh above 1400?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@dozofoz, Went up at 11.25 but we only went to samoens and did marmottes and dahu quite a number of times. Portet had lots of rocks showing on the way back. Yes there was fresh, but visibility was a bit duff at times, and it got damper as time went on. Went back at 3 and les carroz was really quite heavy wet snow by then.

@BAN, yes, we had been in Morillon for most of the morning. Bit stoney (make that very in places) and thin, but ok. My rock hopper skis have loads of thin scratches on the base! It was open down to Bergin chair, then had ski down to get the three seater to get back to the top. They were downloading people down the new Sairon chair.

@zorrac we managed to brave stop and start rides on Grand Vans and Corbalanche to get to top of Morillon. After refreshment at D'Clair, skied down to Les Esserts. Lots of grass and stones at bottom, with streaks of snow: old skis really earning their keep! New lift is good, albeit short seat depth, which was 'interesting' with backpack on!
Corbalanche unpisted was deserted and snow fresh, so fun run before making way back.
Looks like it may be some time before links reopening...

We skied in Les Carroz Sunday afternoon. Snowed heavily to start but wind dropped. Plenty of fresh snow on and off piste. Skied Combe, marmottes and over to Morillon. By about 2.30 snow eased off and conditions perfect. Very few people out so it felt like had mountain to ourselves.
Snowing heavily in village now and heading up shortly.
