@rg1, if Gumpold is close then there are a couple of alternatives - we use Snow & Fun at Dorfstraße 204, who have been pretty good to us in previous years. They speak reasonable English, plus there was (maybe still is?) a very helpful if slightly gruff Aussie in the ski hire area who has always been excellent. They've got a good range of well-maintained kit, never quibbled over midweek changes, return inspections are done in seconds, a broken kids pole was dealt with as "it happens - take another", and so on.
Discounts at half term are basically all about what you can agree in advance, or via websites - if you are also booking lessons at Snow & Fun, they have a package deal which makes the kit hire cheaper. At the end of the day its a busy week and you can try to haggle all you like, but every shop will show you the price list and then if you're not happy they'll show you the door. There will be 20+ other customers queueing behind you, and they don't need the hassle, plus prices in town are fairly competitive.

@kabooooooom, not on the news today so it is quite literally "yesterday's news". Tatman's is there so if it were a serious TO used pension he'd have known about it by now. I'll check the local newspapers but the privacy laws here prevent them from naming names 9 times out of 10

Thanks ousekjarr. Will look into that. Cheapest I can find so far seems to be via Alpinresorts, as far as I can see - will maybe ping the shops direct and see if they will match.

The online report below implies that it was a minor fire which was dealt with quickly and did not damage the upper floors of the building involved. http://www.salzburg24.at/urlauber-entdeckt-brand-in-pension-in-saalbach/4573381

Thanks, @Tatman! We have also been advised that piste 11 in Hinteglem is a good bet for first-weekers. Have been warned against 52 because you need to go down a few steep bends before getting onto it. Any advice on how to get there?

@matfrazerz, Blue 52 in Saalbach is accessed from the mid-station of the Kohlmais '5 beer-can' gondola or the old 3-pers chairlift next to it. After 3 days in ski school you should manage it OK, but don't attempt it from the top station of the gondola, get out at the mid-station. It is much easier than 11 in Hinterglemm, which is at the top of the Zwolferkogel lift.

@honved, I'd already seen that and used it (along with several other online sources) to update the news yesterday! The poster wants to know the name of the place (which will be closed this week because of smoke-damage if nothing else), but only those in Saalbach now will be able to find out as it is not in any of the media here due to the very strictly enforced privacy laws here in Germany and Austria.

@rg1, Gumpold, Snow & Fun, Rabbit, Hervis and Intersport Breitfuss are all virtually in a line along the main street. Add in Bachmnn at Zwolferkogel and Moser in the village centre and there is plenty of competition in the village. Hervis seems to be cheapest. All the shops have decent equipment and will allow you to change skis and boots if necessary. At half-term you are unlikely to get any discounts other than those advertised online.
Hansi's is first choice if you're staying in Saalbach, but too far away if you're in Hinterglemm.

@espri, there's a skibus on the hour in the late afternoon to Saalfelden station (20 minutes) which will probably be my way off the mountain. It would definitely beat the walk to the station carrying all my luggage.

@Bob, when I last skied the area on Monday, the pistes on the Fieberbrunn side were not in great condition. Probably only the Reckmoos Nord and Hochhörndl pistes were really worth skiing. On Monday the Reckmoos Süd piste was closed, so you had to download by lift to reach the TirolS link. The Vierstadlalm piste at the TirolS on the Hinterglemm side was open, sometimes with some mogully bits. There has been a little snow since then, so the situation might have changed. Up till now this season certainly hasn't shown Fieberbrunn at its best yet.

It's looking like the conditions next week will be totally different to this week. It all hangs on the temperature as to whether the next four days bring snowmageddon or rainmageddon - looks finely balanced at the minute.

I went back there today, and although the lights on the board at the top showed F12 as closed, the "Closed" signs and barriers below the chairlift weren't there any more, and there were dozens of people skiing it (I was in the gondola above them, since the sign at the top had said it was closed).

Just a few words about the renowned Saalbach apres-ski scene:
For us it usually starts in the Berger Alm (sometimes called the Berger Hochalm and fondly referred to as the "Burglar Alarm" by some). When the owner, Gunther, noticed that his mountain restaurant was usually deserted after 4pm and decided to try to drum up some business by offering "Buy 1 Get 1 free" drinks between 3.30pm and 4.30pm every day, little did he realise what a late-afternoon magnet and meeting place it would become. Add to the formula really excellent food, friendly waiters (Seppi, Herman and Peter - returning every year), interesting drinks (try the Bauerntequila!) and banging apres-ski music (admittedly not to everyone's taste) and he now has perhaps the most successful mountain bar on the Kohlmais. And the run down piste 52 afterwards is always something to look forward to.
The iconic Josef Solar and his band, the Flamingos, who have been performing in the Hinterhag Alm for over 30 years, have been augmented by a new keyboard player and a very personable female singer, Monika (whose rendition of "Atemlos Durch Die Nacht" will send shivers down your spine! ) So now a 5-piece and all the better for it - the atmosphere in there seems to get better all the time (f that's possible). The owner, Evi, has been chucking hearts from her balcony for 35 years. Unfortunately she suffers from a delusion that she can sing - but never mind. Completely nuts but addictive!
Spacey has now arrived in Saalbach, which would not be the same without his unique and quite manic brand of singing, guitar-playing and Geordie humour. He erupted powerfully (even for him!) for the first time this season in Bobby's on Friday, and he will be appearing there every Friday, and in the Oetzi Bar on Mondays and Wednesdays, and in the Spitzbub on Tuesdays and Thursdays. (Early evening in the Spitzbub and late evening in the other two).
The Swedish-run Underbar is proving very popular this season, as always. A live singer every evening from 10pm, and he's pretty good. The atmosphere warms up after 10pm, is always convivial and often gets fairly riotous. The bartenders, Richard, Johann and Martin, and the drinks waitress, Lydia, are all very friendly and will make you feel extremely welcome.
We had a very pleasant surprise last Thursday evening in Bobby's Pub - a really excellent live duo, the Mark Brenner band (see http://www.mark-brenner.com/index4.php?page=media ). They've been booked for every Thursday in January and I can strongly recommend them. They seemed to get better and better as the evening wore on (and no, it wasn't just the beer). Mark Brenner is clearly extremely talented and versatile, and also experienced in working his audience and getting them into partying/dancing mood. Really excellent, and probably worth a later start the following morning (he comes on at about 10pm).
Those who have spare energy for some late-night conviviality often find themselves in the Oetzi bar, run by Brit, Stuart, and his Swedish colleagues - always a good, friendly atmosphere.
That's about it for us, although others will no doubt enjoy Castellos, the Taverne, the Kuhstall, Zum Turm and Alibi (where I heard a talented saxophonist playing on Thursday evening, on the way home after Mark Brenner). Some people even seem to enjoy the Elvis impersonator in Berger's Sporthotel!
Let's share any other news or good experiences of Saalbach's apres-ski scene.

@mattiwilkin, The Hinterhag usually closes around the end of March. Just come down from there - being in the middle of hundreds of people joyfully singing "Schatzi schenkt mir ein photo" with one voice got me quite emotional.

4 euro seems to be the norm for a beer. Not sure on a sky sports bar in hinterglemm. Bobby's in saalbach will though. Ski or nightbus taxi about 20 euro

Hi all
With just 52 hours and 11 mins (not that I am counting) until I arrive in Saalbach, I am enjoying seeing in the Saalbach snow conditions thread the more seasonal like weather news from those already there. Therefore I can now turn my attention to another important matter - food, can anyone give me updates on new huts and/or restaurant dining options in fieberbrun or I seem to recall there was talk of new one on the bernkogel associated with the new lift?
Thanks

@ribblevalleyblue, I'm almost ashamed to admit that Fieberbrunn is still uncharted territory for me. I've been waiting for conditions to improve before going over there, and now that they have, I'm confined to barracks with that horrible scourge of mankind, man-flu (or it might be a cold).
However, the new restaurant on the Bernkogel, the Luis Alm, is directly across the piste from the Baernalm. It's quite large and very swish, but for me lacks the character of many of the others. It's a little unfair of me to comment, because I haven't spent any time in there - just a quick look inside.
One thing I can comment on is the chicken man's new emporium at the top of the Steinbergbahn. It's absolutely beautifully designed and the seating makes the most of the fantastic view. I haven't eaten there yet - keep getting drawn to the Alte Schmiede and the Asitzbraeu - but it's definitely something I want to do soon. Its capacity is limited, so I would assume that it might be necessary to have lunch early or late in order to get a seat. The chicken and the ribs look mouth-watering.

@ribblevalleyblue, Yes, it's a massive upgrade!
Thank you everyone incidentally for your messages of sympathy. There is never a good time to be stricken with man-flu, but with a blizzard raging outside and the top lifts mostly closed, it seems almost serendipitous!

My favourite restaurant on the Fieberbrunn slopes is the Wildalpgatterl. Unfortunately, the runs you use to ski to and from it, e.g. down by the Streuböden gondola, have had too little snow to open so far this season. However, I trust that situation will change in a few days when the snow keeps on coming.
Another hut worth a visit if you're only looking for a light snack is Karins Teehütte, I often eat Weißwürste and Brezen there. The small, simple hut lies off to the side from the middle station of the Reckmoos Nord gondola. Coming down from the Reckmoos Nord, the easiest way to reach it is by the ski route F32, Holy shot (I think they must have made up these names for the new piste map. I've never heard of it ). At least in the past this "route" was always pisted, taking the left-hand option after the track section in the middle of the Reckmoos Nord and then turning off to the left through the trees at the last hillock before the middle station of the gondola. You can also reach the hut off-piste when conditions allow it, skiing down from the top station of the Lärchfilzen chairlift on the other side of the valley.
A new hut is the Pulvermacher Scherm at the middle station of the TirolS gondola link to Hinterglemm. I've only eaten there once so far and, although the soup might have been a little warmer, it generally seemed attractive.
There are several other huts dotted around the Fieberbrunn area and all provide good standard ski fare, the Hochhörndler Hütte lies on the route between Fieberbrunn and Saalbach-Hinterglemm, for example.

A bit late weighing in on this, but I'd have to say that the Hinterhag Alm is just about the most incredible atmosphere I've ever experienced. Genuinely the most intense three hours of my life in that bar. The following day, I had zero voice and could barely move!

@Gerbil007, Coincidentally we have a table reserved in there this evening. It's certainly a hard-core apres-ski experience, particularly if you go upstairs. The lead singer, Josef Solar (he's the one in the leather trousers, who looks like a Thunderbirds puppet - unsure whether Scott or Virgil) was belting out the same or similar songs and calling "'allooooo" from the same balcony when I first went in there in 1987 - even he is not sure when he actually started.
Apparently, Evi, the owner, has been chucking hearts from the balcony to the strains of 'Unchained Melody' for 40 years. The philosophy seems to be that, if you have stumbled on a winning formula, don't change it - and it certainly works! People respond to the nutty traditions of the place - Josef's rallying call, the 'Herzeltanz mit unserer Evi' and of course the essential apres-ski anthems with more gusto - bordering on mass hysteria - than you will see anywhere else in Saalbach-Hinterglemm (including the Goassstall).
That is not to say that it's always the same. Occasionally you might find it's unusually quiet - such as on January 1st, when Mrs TT suddenly found herself totally alone and under a spotlight on the dance floor, whilst Josef, Evi and the band played "Happy Birthday to You" for her. At such times, it's enjoyable in a more personal, intimate way.
At other times, it may just be too full - a victim of its own popularity - although those who stick it out are often rewarded for their patience, when a group of people, who may have been there since 3.30pm, decide it's time to leave and unexpectedly vacate a table.
When taking people there for the first time, I try to psychologically prepare them by taking them first to the Bergeralm's Happy Hour (3.30-4.30pm) up the mountain, before skiing down. However, I can remember many occasions when my best efforts have come to nothing - as when Honeybunny and her group stuck it for about 30 seconds before making a swift exit - the shock was just too much, but they did return a few nights later, knowing what to expect, and had probably the best apres-ski experience of their holiday.
A table can be reserved by speaking to the waiters, Milan or Stefan, a few days in advance. Those guys do an amazing job - carrying trays of drinks through a surging throng of party-animals every evening, yet always smiling, friendly and welcoming.
A final word about Josef and the band - they inject so much into their performance - it's amazing how they manage to maintain the same level of energy and enthusiasm, despite performing every evening between Boxing Day and the end of March. I can only think that they are energised by the response from the audience. This season they have expanded to a 5-piece by taking on a female singer, Monika, and a keyboard player - the Hinterhag goes from strength to strength, and long may it continue!

Agreed. The best place ever. We walked in at 3.30 one day and the waiter upstairs just said do you want a table. ( we had been good customers the previous evening) so obviously said yes. He soon chucked another party off a table on the balcony opposite the band. He brought us beer all night one of the lads was a lightweight so the waiter downed about 3 of his beers. When the 240 euro bill came between 4 of us we thought we had done well and given them a good return on the table. Until the table behind got their bill 900 euro between 5... What a night. What a place

I agree completely agree that it could be an assault on the senses. I first went in with a group when on the RAF ski champs and just thought it was waaay too packed and raucous to really be enjoyable. The second time, I went with a smaller group and the mindset to just embrace it; we were there from 3.30pm until ??? (It was dark, and I couldn't remember my own name, much less the time!) and upstairs the whole time. I was saturated in beer and sweat and had ringing ears for ages!
I'm extremely jealous of you going there this afternoon while I sit in this office. I'm also a bit gutted that I wont be able to visit this season. We're just about to book for a week in 3 valleys (unless it turns out you do in fact have availability for 4 from 5 March? Kev Speight here, contacted you through facebook yesterday) which I'm sure we'll enjoy, but I have no doubt we'll miss the ambiance of Saalbach.
