Although I am completely new to all this, I am keen to learn more / discuss oppportunities for owners on this site....couldn't see a dedicated active thread though, would be great to have a thread for each town, where people could discuss demand, offer advice (eg pricing), swap leads for double bookings (I might have one for xmas), even help each other out with keys, tradesmen, emergencies etc.....I assume this has been brought up 1000 times?

The November weekend opening is a bit speculative and is often postponed a week or two, in fact this year it's postponed by one week, but I'd say on average there's usually plenty to ski on by Xmas.

Boo hiss! We're coming out this weekend to sort out a few bits and pieces and I was hoping for a couple of days sliding. Now will have to focus on clearing out the cave and eating too much cheese. |
DJL We're out too this weekend! Getting keys and dropping off a load of stuff. Arrive Saturday afternoon and leave late Sunday. I don't think we'll be sliding there now. They were going to open but have now confirmed it for the following weekend. As far as I know Les Crosets is open and also Bernex! And Bernex is free. I think I'll hang fire though. Crosets will be rammed I reckon.

I'm not booked yet for Xmas either, which is unusual, even more so considering that the rest of the season has booked quickly.
I'm putting it down to caution from last year, waiting for the snow to fall, plus changeover Saturday falling on Boxing Day. I think people prefer to relax on Boxing Day, rather than travel back after Xmas, so it's just one of those things. Booking a Sunday to Sunday Xmas might have been cleverer, but would have left me a short week sometime in January. I expect my place might go for Xmas once the pistes open, but if it doesn't, I'll just take the family up there.
DJL, I'm there too this weekend if you fancy a beer.

@langball, lay my hat is a pretty useful forum and I think there is a section for France/Alps.
We have had an "A/C/LG/Morzine not the weather thread" in previous years, but quite often not a lot of discipline shown in where to post!
Have you joined the Vallee Expats e mail round robin thing? We had our chalet here for about 13 years before a friend alerted me to it and I have found it very useful. Send me a PM with your e mail address and I will send info on to you.

Also having quite alot of fun looking at people attempting to get up our road without winter tyres/ chains. Don`t do it folks - main roads are fine but the others are less groomed

Standby to receive hundreds of daily emails along the lines of, "where in Morzine can I buy a loaf of bread" etc.

Lots of tempting accommodation offers now dropping into my inbox for w/c 13 December and I'm able to go at short notice.
Do you locals think there's been enough snow to make that week a safe bet, regardless of the weather over the next couple of weeks? Or should I wait a little longer?

@head_like_a_rock, but how much uplift will be open given current forecasts? Avoriaz only?

OK maybe could have been a bit clearer...
Webcams suggest Morzine currently very snowy. Is there enough snow yet that the lower lifts might be open by 12/13 December, or is more needed? When might that decision be taken? Just after some guidance from those on the ground, I can wait until nearer the date before booking.
thanks

@head_like_a_rock, its three weeks away. No one has a crystal ball - it isnt just about snow but also about liftie contracts etc.
You say you can go at short notice. Wait another week or two if you want. Or take a chance and possibly ski Avoriaz if M-LG isn`t open.
Or stay at home and have no skiing.

D@head_like_a_rock, we are often out here from the weekend around 13/14 December and generally been able to ski just in Avoriaz that week as they are not generally staffed up until the scheduled opening date in LG/M. Although weekend skiing on a few pistes accessed from one or two lifts sometimes happens.

@Pamski, sent you a msg thx......really hope it's not 100 emails asking about nearest boulangerie
Weather wise, it's still bitter. I was working on a building site this morning but it was so cold I left at 1pm and came home for wine and cheese. See how french I am.
Forecast is for another 20cm this weekend (at 1500m approx), and then it will turn warmer all next week (7-9 degree highs). It should be amazing skiing conditions after the 50-70cm that's fallen. Key will obviously be freeze limits, rising from 500 to 3000m next week. Not good. BUT, no rain is forecast (that's what killed last december).

@Nadenoodlee, it's only 2½ weeks now. I realise nobody has a crystal ball hence the request for "some guidance" rather than a detailed weather forecast. Thanks for the advice.
@Pamski, that's helpful thanks, am I right in thinking Avoriaz will be fully open from 12 December in 'normal' conditions?

Agree, normally Christmas week is the first to go after Half Term much more popular than New Years which I never understand.
This year we decided for reasons completely unrelated to last year (family availability) to stay at home for Christmas week and arrive on boxing day. We consoled ourselves with the thought well at least we will get some rental income as historically thats a lucrative week. As you said hopefully it will book up now that we are getting the snow, unfortunately agency has already unilaterally dropped price 10%
Fingers crossed for everyone that as the news of the snow starts to percolate out we will see it all get back on track.

Be aware that although Avoriaz will be 'fully open' from teh 12th Of december in practice that means that they often keep certain pistes closed until the 23/24th odd because they like to keep it nice for the hoards that descend for Christmas weekend. So just be warned.
Its normally stuff like the snowcross and black and occasionally super morzine is limited (due to lack of snow at that altitude) etc, its not the end of the world, but adjust your expectations accordingly and then if I am wrong you will have a nice surprise.

It's not the snow that's the issue with Morzine opening, it's the staff. Their contract doesn't start until just before Xmas so it's not likely they will open much if any at all before the original dates. Avoriaz is of course planned to open earlier.
Cheers

I was talking Super-Morzine can be closed, ie Tetras/Zore/Seraseux and whatever the new run they are building over there gets called. THis is part of the Avoriaz area not the Morzine area, despite the name. However it (and Crete) are the lowest slopes in Avoriaz and also are aimed at beginners so they try and keep them nice ready for the big influx.

High excitement! We've arrived in Chatel after a foggy drive down (clear after Besancon) with snow across the Jura and some impressive views of white mountains.
Temperature -5C at the Pas de Morgins and a good 15cm on the car park. Sky now almost clear.
One small slide in the car at the one way in Morgins. Reminder to self - 4x4 on the new car doesn't mean I am invulnerable. Handled the steep snow into the garage OK though.
Why high excitement? Our internet works!
@snoozeboy, @sarah, I'll text. Saturday looks favourite.

Yes but cheap ones. To be honest it was probably my enthusiasm to see how it would react on something genuinely slippery that was the cause.
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have made it into the parking in the (dear departed) FWD SAAB on winters from a standing start so it certainly helps with uphill traction.
It's not a "proper" 4x4. Skoda Scout with Haldex.

Steady light snow at 1300m and 0C on our balcony and seems to be getting a bit heavier Suspect it might be just below freezing away from the building. A car that was clear last night looks to have about 1 cm on it.

@under a new name, Yes I think it will perform OK. Noticed quite a few of them in the Swiss part of the PDS including up steep tracks so thought it likely a reasonable choice (cheating VW diesel not withstanding).
Managed a standing start from the uphill snow last night with a light right foot. Tyres were already fitted to the second set of wheels I bought on eBay. One pair 5mm, others 7mm so I thought I would use them this season and if not happy can change for next.
Still snowing more lightly.

Had a lovely ski yesterday in champery, so day 1 of hopefully many! Just planchaux and crosets télésiège open, but lots of snow and on piste conditions were great. Alternate misty and clear, so a touch of motion sickness for me, but a fab day all in.

You probably already know this, but some won't - when starting from standstill in slippy (snow, ice, mud) conditions, use 2nd gear instead of 1st - there is much less chance of spinning the wheels.

@FreeBeer, Yep, e-mails coming round today, and they are opening Prodains and Ardent cable cars to get you into the system. Only the Arare and Ardent sectors, but that is enough for a good slide to start with. Lets hope it is not too warm this week.
