@Flandiddly, thanks for the update. We were actually at Samoens 1600 today and the children got their ESF lessons and I got my ZigZag lesson (my thighs are still burning from lots of fast runs down Marmotte!)
The pistes were generally nice at the top but with some really icy patches and at Samoens 1600 there were some very muddy areas developing in the afternoon. Snow cannons were running further up so fingers crossed that they can keep at least one slope open until it snows (selfishly, I want my children to get their ESF badges).
We were quite pleased as we didn't expect to be skiing at all!

Arrived in Flaine yesterday. Skied up at the top most of the day. Not much open, but the snow was lovely this morning and surprisingly good this afternoon. We were with a guide (off-piste course!) and he managed to find a very small patch of powder among the 'Swiss-cheese' holes in the ground. We managed to track that out pretty quickly and we're not sure what the rest of the week has in store. No snow forecast until Saturday Looks like we'll be doing a bit of skinning later in the week, especially if the lifts close again.

Any updates on conditions. Snow forecast seems to be changing every hour! One minute it looks like a dump on the way, the next it says nothing!

Snowyjim... No real change. Cold overnight but don't think the cannons have been on. Beautiful sunshine, skied everyday. Flaine is better than Samoens and Les Carroz, less stones on the piste...
To be honest getting more skiing in than we thought but generally ski in the morning, pick our pistes carefully and then it's warm enough for a beer on the balcony in the afternoon....
Nice walks , cycling. Forcast is for some snow by Friday and a bit more early next week but as you say it keeps changing..
In a nutshell, if you just want to ski ski ski, it will be frustrating. If you can ski a bit and still enjoy the village and everything else it has to offer then it is fantastic.....

@Colinski, thanks so much for your post about conditions. We are arriving in Samoens on Saturday and was feeling a bit despondent, but it's good to know conditions are at least skiable.
Have now seen forecast for next few days and getting excited about possible heavy snow falls.
Happy Christmas to all

@carroz, thanks for the update re Flaine. Sad for so many cancellations. We are determined to make the most of it anyway, and have everything crossed for the snow to arrive.

Skied Samoens, les carroz today...ok, but lots of stone dodging.... It's ok if you can get to a nice restaurant lunch, but agree Flaine is much better. All forecasts seem to be now saying snow on 27/28 so hopefully all of you coming for new year could be timing it just right....

Temperature has really dropped and snow forecast forum 4am onwards. Really do need it now as some of the runs this morning were almost unskiable as they had patches of solid ice...only had an hour. Rest of family headed for le carroz spa while I cook dinner and keep a check on the forecasts, but it's looking good for new year !

It's snowing!
Arrived last night to cold clear conditions. Nothing at all when we went to bed, but now snowing in Les Carroz. Probably about 10cm so far, and still snowing. Difficult to tell how hard it's snowing as it's still dark, but it's much more than the odd flake or two.
Safe travels for those coming today.

Can anyone recommend a place for us to begin our GM adventure? We come back on NY day for 4 days skiing before I go back to work, and want to explore, we have the entire season of course and before we left had planned to go just to Flaine because of conditions, but now it looks like we could go pretty much anywhere..

We were up in Flaine today, and it snowed reasonably heavily for most of the day, with so much wind that most lifts were closed despite plenty of snow. Not the nicest journey either up or down, but worth it for that much snow. Piste bashing had just started on Tourmaline as we left.
Snow has now eased off in Les Carroz, but it's still around -4C, so nothing is going to thaw.
@macgyver, I'd vote for starting in Les Carroz. I may be biased having just bought an apartment here, but one of the reasons for buying here was the flexibility when snow conditions were unsure. If there's not enough snow in Les Carroz it's only a few minutes up the road to Flaine by car. The same is not true of Samoens, much as it's a lovely place.

@sj1608, just out of interest, how did you start research properties to buy in les carroz, am really interested but apart from some random internet searches have little idea where to start.

Flandiddly.....we started with finding the location we wanted to be in, settle on a budget and trawl the agents in summer. We visited loads with many agents. All had good and bad points. We ended up buying a new build from alpine property in Samoens who were fantastic.. Used a uk solicitor who specialised in French property , who helped us find a bank, mortgage company and we are finally in. Best thing we did. Love it here !!!!
Just look at lots and make sure you see your location at different times of year. Type of property may be determined by other factors such as rental opportunities...
Good luck

@Flandiddly, we started by touring the estate agents on an almost daily basis while we were in Les Carroz. That way they knew we were serious and we also got to view lots of properties to start to understand better what was available where at what price, and also what we did and didn't want. If we walked into an estate agent at 5pm and were interested, we'd have seen it by 5.30, which is the way it works here. So it doesn't really eat into skiing time. Enquiring after properties on their websites was not a great success.
In parallel, we scoured http://www.leboncoin.fr/ which has private adverts. But we soon discovered that many (but not all) of these were advertised by people who didn't like the price the estate agent said their property was worth so they were often overpriced.
In the end, as we walked out of viewing one place I looked up by chance and saw a scruffy home made 'A vendre' sign hanging from a window. We phoned the number that night, and they drove over 500km to show us the place later in the week. We made an offer on the spot, and after a few twists and turns, and several long delays caused by their notaire we finally got it in September.
So today has been the first time that we have skied from our very own apartment.

It's still snowing quite hard in Samoens, probably 80 cm in last 24 hours, visibility down in village is pretty bad. I am a bit of a fair weather skier and will wait till it clears up a bit and they've pisted it. We will have to wait for the snowploughs to come before we can get the car out as well!
@Flandiddly, we bought in Samoens as there seemed to be more going on than in Les C and we like the walking in summer in Giffre Valley. We researched the location first and stayed in the village winter and summer. Alpine Properties were v good and the notaire in Samoens speaks perfect English. It went very smoothly. We got a mortgage on our UK house to buy. As we are paid in sterling and didn't want the currency exposure. It took 2 years of Internet searching before we found what we wanted, then we nipped over here quick to see it and put the offer in. That was because we wanted a chalet but not a massively expensive one nor a major restoration job. If you want a new lock up and leave apt then there are lots in Samoens. The MGM developments seem good quality, and usually have pools etc. however the service charges can be high on apartments.
