Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Just watch the amount of snow forecast for the 12th dwindle day by day to a light dusting.

The only thing I may do is switch to hire skis if there is still no snow forthcoming towards the end of next week.

@chrisrawles, no, some very light snow last night. I'm not too far from the 3V (in Les Arcs), and we had 1 or 2cm of snow at resort level. In the grand scheme of things it's insignificant, but does make things look much prettier.

Had a little jaunt above Val Thorens today... The main bowl down to Chalet de Caron level looks 'OK' (on piste), below that its bare. Seemed like most lifts above that were open, but it looked pretty quiet from what I could see.

Some good snow for those who are prepared to work for it though - 400m vertical of perfect creamy heavy powder in the St Pères couloirs - the right-most line never fails to entice - aesthetic, and considerably steeper at the top than its neighbours:

Looking back down into the Val T bowl from the approach slopes - its all a bit thin further down (La Masse and Les Menuires more suited to MTB currently!) - the pistes are actually in muchbetter shape than this photo suggests...:

Looking up on the approach - you get a good sense of how much the couloir kicks up from here:

The top of the couloir currently is as well filled in as I have ever seen it - just 3 metres or so of rocks which are too tight to ski through (with rocks under the snow too) below the col but after that it was perfect - creamy, heavy powder on a fairly consistent base. In the past I have generally had to downclimb or rap the first 20/30 metres over exposed rocks!

Ready for some fun:

Looking back up from partway down the couloir:

The rest of the descent was reasonable given the current thin snowpack - by following the stream/gully lines which are well filled in it was possible to ski back to within 50m of the piste edge without feeling like I was risking skis or limbs (there were a good number of 'skier vs rock' incidents when Val T opened recently for a weekend...).

And finally, a quick view up the Plein Sud side... yikes!:

Actually the saddest news of all yesterday was noticing the demise of the last remaining free parking in Val Thorens - the big car park down by Chalet de Caron now has barriers and is fully 'ValThoParc'-ed up... Sad
At least the Police Municipale weren't being too overzealous yesterday and plenty of on the street parking was going on without any tickets.

I wish I was capable of skiing like that offpiste.

I stuck to the pistes and it was pretty good all round, the quality of the snow was excellent on some of the pistes.

And there is still free parking a little further down the road, 1km from VT with a free bus to the central station. Or you could do what the French do and park anywhere anyway.

@macgyver, your pics are good too but my question wasn't very well put. Going to be in Les Menuires from Sunday. Doesn't look too good for skiing there at the moment. So looking at driving up to VT and parking at P4 then. But is that now chargeable or still free?

Yeah thats what I was referring to, P4. The big park next to the bus station, just before the road tunnel that goes into the resort, marked for day visitors, it's definitely still there but whether its open right now or not I'm not sure, might be too early?

@andy1234, @macgyver, ah, possibly my mistake - when I drove past P4 (if the map is correct) there were barriers etc down, in the past it was always a free car park with no barriers...

@offpisteskiing, sadly no sign of a big snowfall. Snow forecast for 12th or 13th gets downgraded by each forecast. A big storm will of course at some point come but I can't see many runs open next Saturday when they say they want to open

It's open and free for day visitors. Only problem is that you can't ski back to it at the moment, so if you do use it you need to download on the Cairns gondola or take the shuttle bus from resort.

Lots of lots of local police in the resort today, looking like they were managing the parking situation very closely.

bergflex now has no snow on Friday at all and the 32cm predicted for Saturday is down to 10-15cm.

How much snow would we need to create a real good base?

@HoneyBunny, 3 days of cold temps and they will open I'd say....north facing so if they can get the snow down you can gondola up from 1800m in the absolute worst case...

Evolution: arrival of snow in the coming days

It's really Monday that tumbles down a real disturbance northwest. So it will snow more seriously all day Monday on the Pyrenees, first from 1300 m and then dropping to 700 to 800 m. We can expect new snow of 20 to 30 cm at 1500 m above sea level on the west of the chain. The Jura, the Vosges and the Massif Central, snowfall is also expected, but they will not last as long, and a layer of 5 to 10cm around 1000 meters. On the Alps, Savoie and Isère departments of the north will be the most favored with good snowfall accompanied by winds.

The next snowfall will take place on Wednesday with the descent of a 2nd disturbance from the northwest, much less active than Monday. This is the weekend that a major offensive snow is expected on all massive this time.

I think all the gloom and doom merchants can do one. We had a great day on the hill in VT today. Took a bit of time to get going, as it was a little unusual to walk down from the top of cairn, but once we made it onto the piste the conditions were great. OK so there were some bits that got a bit icy towards the end of the day (the red down from peclet took a few prisoners) but largely we had some great skiing and only skiied the same piste twice out of choice.

Some general snow conditions on piste.
