Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Can anyone help with a couple of questions on Morzine please snowHead ?

I'm spending the end of this week with an old mate who is not an experienced skier and I don't think he's skied in France before. I need to make sure he understands the benefit Laughing

I'm after recommendations for good mountain restaurants reachable on nothing more than easy reds, on either side of the town. Specifically authentic French full service, but we can have two courses and coffee and not be much more than an hour (so no Michelin starred joints please).

Also any good live bands in Morzine on Thurs, Fri ir Sat nights?

TIA

@Val Desire, struggling with the not much more than an hour thing... anyway, can't go far wrong with Chez Nannon above the Nyon plateau. Patates aux reblochon, complet. You won't need two courses.

There's a good number of restaurants in the goat village just below the Lindarets bowl and that can be accessed via reds, blues, or even on foot from the Ardent gondola.

There is a bit of a contradition in your requirements though - "authentic French full service" and "not be much more than an hour" don't always go together. Provided you're only a small group you should be fine in most places though.

For live music the Dixie Bar quite often have music on, though you're going to miss The Dixie Micks who aren't back in Morzine until the 23rd Feb/9th March.

Le Vaffieu, which is on the Pleney side, get the bubble up, hard right down to the Belvedere chair and its at the top of that chair. Coming from Les Gets its at the top of the Folliets chair. But you won't get in and out in an hour, it also gets very busy, at least in peak weeks, so popping in for a coffee and booking for lunch time is recommended.

In the Lindarets bowl itself (above the goat village) the Passe Montagne does a nice "authentic french full service" lunch.

And if you make it as far as Mont Chery, if you take the red runs off the back of the mountain and then cut across to the bottom of the black (which isn't very black at that point) you can get to Les Girolles. You have to order at the bar, but its really good hearty french food.

@Wrekingirl, Do you think the Passe Montagne is expensive. Nice food it is, but a leek tart with chips and a beer for 25€ , ouch

Another vote for Nannon, la Paika and le Chanterelles. Also, La leiche on the right hand side down the Linga over towards Chatel had a pretty good plat du jour. The cremaillaire or the Petit lindarets are both good in the goat village.

@snowfraise, We like La Leiche a lot. It is one of our regular stops for a hot chocolate or coffee if the weather is foul or for a glass of wine outside in the sun if it is good.

It is not, however the authentic full French service but none the worse for that!

@DJL, we were there on your recommendation from a previous thread I think! Quick, filling and tasty.

We were in La Leiche mid January, good food, great fire but we found the service was really slow. It was a quiet week and perhaps they would have more staff when busier but in my opinion not somewhere for a quick lunch. I'm out next week and won't be risking it! Also lunched at Nannon-excellent but I would assume packed out at half-term? Plan is early start and early lunch.

@BergenBergen, yes I agree its expensive for certain things, I had the leek tart and found it a bit disappointing, considering how much it cost. My OH's tartiflette however was very yummy ( a bit on the runny side but he likes it that way) and priced equivalently to other restaurants that we have been to on the moutain. If the OP is looking for value, the little restaurant down the blue Crots piste, just a little bit down from Avoriaz centre, has waitress service, is reasonably priced (€12 for a bowl of pasta) but the menu is more basic.

Many thanks to those offering advice on places to eat in Les Gets during our stay this past weekend. The Mrs was suitably impressed!

We ate dinner at the Chamois D'or on the first evening. Good, but not spectacular. I notice the head chef has moved on so maybe that's brought the standard down a little? L'Outa on the second evening was lovely. Really quaint restaurant and food was outstanding. Owners raised an eyebrow at our lack of vino consumption, but we just felt like cold beer was required on the evening in question! Third day we had lunch at La Paika and for me this was the standout. The freshly grilled (outside on the grill) steak and duck was outstanding and the location lovely. Great service and so filling we couldn't eat much for the rest of the day. On our final day we had the hog roast over at La Grand Ourse. I'd been looking forward to this and it didn't disappoint! Mount Chery was a lot of fun in the sun (especially Chery Nord) and the hog roast was the cherry on top (groan!) The welcome from the owners was so warm and friendly, and when they found out it was our anniversary weekend a couple of glasses of sparkling were forthcoming too. The roast hog and vegetables were very tasty and good value. Besides that La Grand Ourse is worth a visit just for the panoramic view alone.

I'm not sure about the skiing/boarding, but the eating was superb Very Happy

@munter, glad that the weekend worked out well - all that lovely eating. As you say the view from the Grande Ourse is spectacular - as we live there most of the winter and are impoverished oap's our eating out can't be every day, and the waistlines certainly couldn't cope with that. We tend to go for coffees and drinks out, lunch later at home, or a cheapo meal, or a splash out - can't bring myself to do the middle of the road dishes.

Lovely anniversary!

Hi guys, we have been to pds a few times (morzine and Champery), first week of March and second week of February. This year we need to stick to school hols and I have booked chatel for the week starting 28/3......am I mad and should I be bringing our mountainbikes instead of skis?

Back from a great four days in the PdS. Thanks for the recommendations, only made one, but that was worth it.

Day one lunch had been booked in the goat village, can't recall the name (Rhodos?), one of the first on the right as you ski in, best Tartiflette I can remember. Had a too well lubricated lunch and ended up starting the circular tour a little late and stranding wife and three youths in Chatel. After a bus ride to Abondance, the chalet company driver earned himself a good tip.

Day two we retired to the self serve above Chavanette to celebrate surviving the Wall. OK omelette, not the best.

Day three was Vaffieu, seated in the tiny upstairs room. My steak was little tough, but the fried potatoes were a garlicky perfection. All the dishes were good, with the Foie Gras 3 ways the standout.

Day four was just the two of us and Mrs P wanted to visit to La Ferme in the goat village where she had been in years gone by. Nice P de J, but nothing special.

Chef's night off was spent at La Chaudanne. I chose badly (Assiette de Grand Mere) and the place was too hot, too crowded and too noisy for my tastes.

Thanks for the help!

The snow here is pretty normal for the time of year now.The beautifully clear blue sunny skies have made for totally excellent days out, but in places the snow can get a little soft. But there's a fresh dump due at the end of the week Smile

Bring your Mountain Bike if you want to take part in the Razorbikes but apart from that, stick to you preferred method of sliding (skis, board, bum) whatever works best for you snowHead

Great afternoon with HarryFlashman, don't tell him, but his missus is better than him.
I may or may not have ended up in a tree on the freeride park at the top of Chamossiere. Top tip, always check out the landing first....

Sorry to cross-post but I didn't get any immediate joy from the On the Piste forum.
I've seen photos of the new covered magic carpet at Pre la Joux. I have read that there is also a new magic carpet being built or already built at the top of the Super Chatel bubble but can't find any details on the inter web . Can anyone confirm? Potentially staying in Chatel next season but trying to work out where is best for the little ones. Cheers

Heh, just saw this - greetings from Ishgl, Lady F (who is indeed rather better than me - she taught me to ski!) were just talking about you today, and looking forward to the next time we all ski together!

And yes, you landed in a tree. I took the same lip and end up in a smaller tree, so I win. Sort of.

It was a cracking afternoon skiing. Ishgl is great fun, with cracking après ski (knocks the socks off Morzine on that score) but it miss my "home mountain". Powder day tomorrow, and if I were in the PDS, I'd know where to go. Here, not so much...

All the best to you folks in the PDS this week - enjoy, be safe, don't get too much air and land in trees. Much.

Posting this in all three places I could think of

Anyone fancy a Snowheads meet up. I’ll bring the other five on our lads’ trip (non-Snowheads).

We have outline plans as follows for the week (which are however bound to change!):

Monday somewhere a bit off the main drag either Abondance, La Chapelle or Bernex
Tuesday and Thursday heading round the circuit so anywhere Swiss side or Avoriaz/Chatel (we managed to bag the 2 4 1 PDS tickets so might as well use them)
Wednesday thinking of St Jean d’Aulps.

Anyone fancy it drop me a line

Hi all, I'd love some advice from the locals. I've got to come over to Morzine to meet some builders the 1st week of April, so thought I might bring the kids for the week. Only problem being that I've left it so late, that I can't get them in ski lessons anywhere, including private's, except for ESF in Les Gets. I will be staying in Morzine, so will have to drive them over each morning, so just wanted to know if it's possible to park near the ski school at 10am, as I don't know Les Gets town at all.

@doddsie, the ski schools normally meet at the bottom of Chavannes. I think there's an underground car park right there. Or a small overground car park the far side of the ice rink - 100m from the meeting point. It should be very quiet that week.

@doddsie, there is certainly the underground car park, sometimes its free but otherwise there will be a charge for parking there. If there are two adults in the car then the easiest thing that we have found, when we have dropped off grandchildren is for the driver to stop, kids get out with the second adult manhandling skis and poles etc, take them up to the ski school and the driver goes round the block. If your children are not complete beginners then I could suggest that you park up near the school and then just ski down from there to the ski school meeting places, bottom of the gondola and Chavannes Express lifts. You would have to follow signs to Le Lac, its up at the top of the road called Route du Lac and there are signs in the village saying Weekend Parking.

@doddsie, I think there is a little bit of car parking at the back of the ESF piou piou place, turn left at the first little roundabout as you approach LG from Morzine, one way, when you get to the Flambeau restaurant on rhs turn left leaving ice rink on right, give way to traffic coming from the right then along front de neige and carry straight on, see Century 21 on left hand side, go up there a bit and around a hire place called, I think, Ski Grenier, there is a bit of car parking there, but it does get congested. Advise you have a dummy run before you need to do it. Alternatively if you carry on the main road from Morzine, turn left on roundabout just past Mt Chery gondola there is a car park on the right so you would then need to walk over the road past the ice rink. Definitely worth sussing it out before you try and tip up five minutes before dropping off time.

If we are down there at some point I will try and check out
