Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

New snow will need to bed down though so hopefully the quieter week will allow the piste bashers to do their work.

NOOOOO - leave it alone !

Conditions are pretty much average for the time of year (certainly compared to the last 15 years...).

Had a cruise around 1650 today testing out some new work-tools:

On Saturday it was mild and wet, with rain up to about 2000m, but snow falling above this. By this morning the trees were white down to St Bon (~1000m), and the off piste above 1650 had ~20cm of light powder.
Snow conditions on piste in Courch 1650 seemed good (the little that I skied) though for once they seemed to be relying on skier-grooming rather than turning everything to corduroy overnight (makes a change).
Higher up the snow was still good, but with evidence of wind during the fall - lots of 'duning' visible (not to mention soft snow slides on almost every aspect):

Around 2300m pretty much everything had fallen off during the morning's PIDA blasting - though there was still some takers for the bits in-between!:

A good day for some mellow runs & meadow skipping:

High winds were visible on the crests, and although the avalanche risk forecast has dropped from 4 to 3 care will still need to be taken on steeper slopes with the persistant weak layer lurking from early winter. Additionally the snowpack remains thin, and there are definitely plenty of rocks just under the surface, particularly near ridges and any convexities where the wind has worked the snow a bit.

The scenery is still good though:

Just back from La Tania. Last snow was now nearly a week ago but the pistes are generally okay especially in 1650 and 1850. Morreta Blanche (the red down to LT) has been shut the last 2 or 3 days as there is a big hole in it, folyeres (the blue) is quite icy, Plan Fontaine (the green) is ok to Bouc Blanc chair but horrid below. Any weak skier should use the bubble. Dou de Lanches (black) only the top half has been open. Generally most unpisted blacks are shut or refrozen moguls now. Ecuriel above Meribel was nice early this week, Combe du Vallon was nice yesterday morning. Suisses was turning to moguls. All the greens and blues around 1850 and 1650 are nice right down to the base of Plantrey and Signal chairs. Gravelles link from 1650 back to 1850 was ok if a touch brown in places. Plenty of brown pistes low down in Meribel and at the bottom of Jerusalem in st Martin too!

Today very quiet in Meribel, a little busier in Courchevel. Temperatuers still very high, so lower runs already slushy by noon. Many pistes starting to look a little worn, although almost everything is open. A lot of stones on piste rather than bare patches. snow very scratchy on piste, not very grippy at all. Off piste is very heavy. Overcast all day today, visibility quite flat. Forecast is brighter tomorrow.

Dropped the daughter off at Val Thorens today (good 9 hour round trip from 4 Vallees) must say the snow looked very sketchy, even for a high resort, looked almost luna up there. Lets hope for more snow....everywhere, gosh we need it.

Skied from La Tania to Val Thorens - all pretty good, although VT is turning into a mogul field..... The runs from the Saulire down to la Tania are pretty nasty though - just compacted snow/ice. As Patch says, very very quiet Very Happy

Warm again today, but some nice snow to be found up high on the shadier aspects (off piste...). Either side of Cote Brune/Venturon was particularly nice with some pockets of unskied soft snow still to be found. Worth staying high currently, hopefully the snow forecast for tomorrow pm/Tuesday will make a difference too.

I'm at La Tania, last day today so had to make the most of it. Lots of new snow but very stodgy low down, and patches of poor visibility higher up. When the sun came out it's been nice, but everything below about 2000m was very heavy. Also they don't seem to have pisted any of the new snow, so a lot of people finding it tough work and the runs down to here are a mare. With falling temps and some work on the piste it will shape up though.

It was a really good day to get nervous friends into powder !
A nice supportive base underneath - perfect to practice in and lots of pistes unpisted with 15cm on top
I bet Offpisteskiing had a good day !
More forecast later in week
Annoyed that meribel couloir was closed - if it was off piste I would have skid it, but as it is a piste I followed the signs - unlike several others !

PBJ, yesterday was a good day... today was even better Happy

Had a nice run down Les Avals, but you couldn't really go wrong today - all the close-in off piste was in great shape - even on the sunny side slopes in Meribel the base under the new snow was soft and forgiving...

Another top-up due tomorrow pm... Happy days!

As above - good conditions today - after some initial snow flurries the vis was pretty good.
Raffort run from top of Olympique had good powder on top of a variable base in the morning. The rest of the day was spent around the Courch' couloirs - some nice soft snow and not too many folks around!

Entry to Emile Allais still a bit rocky and needs a little caution but after the first 10 yards its business as usual:

Upper part (or is it lower part of Bouc BLanc) down to the new chair was very thin last week. I suspect lower Moretta was at least as thin but dont know if recent snow has improved it sufficiently to allow it to open. I dont think I have ever seen it pisted. Murettes, that goes to Le Praz, was pretty poor last week too. Just not enough snow nor cold enough to get the cannon blasting I reckon. Jean Blanc was good though ower section closed.

Probably another 5cm max.

PBJ, glad you had fun - wasn't too sure this morning how big the forecast clear spells would be... turned out alright in the end!

Val Thorens and Orelle were the place to be today it seemed - they had definitely caught way more snow from last nights fall.

One piccie to sum up an awesome day:

Very impressed by the new Peyron chair - what a difference that makes to doing laps up to Bouchet. Worth noting that the off piste routes into the Vallon du Bouchet are very firmly roped off - they appear to still be putting the zip line together and there are big cables running through the snow all the way down that first pitch - bit of a pain in the @rse if you ask me - knackering a whole valley's worth of off piste for the sakes of a gimmick...

The new Pionniers chair out of Val T should also ease the queues at Plein Sud of an afternoon - maybe some progress is good (unlike the zipline).

In general terms pistes in VT and top of Mottaret are in good shape now - no more stones at the top of Venturon than normal! Off piste starting to fill in nicely as long as you avoid rocky crests - the lines from 3V2 down to Lac de la Chambre were great and hardly skied even at 3pm.

Off to Grimentz tomorrow so hoping for more of the same!
