With the current forecast for the Alps over the next 10 days, What impact is this going to have on resort level snow where temperatures are due to reach 10+ degrees? Does anyone have any knowledge that shows that the temperatures will drop again anytime soon?

jimmy38, it's not at all unusual to have temperatures of 10 degrees or more, in Spring. The impact on resort level snow depends a lot on the resort level. It's not unusual for low resorts to run out of resort level snow - but as long as you can get a lift up to the snow (and down again) this might not matter too much.

Oh, jimmy38, if only.
Such trust. Such faith. Especially the words "knowledge" and "will"
But this is weather we are talking about here
Akin to witchcraft and magic run by an erratic committee of giggling school kids.
Temperatures probably will drop eventually. But when.

Of course they will Jonpim, likely to happen in early November as the days get shorter and winter approaches

Can often depend on slope orientation with south facing slopes slowing snow far quicker than north facing slopes.

Anyone know if there a decent list anywhere of resorts with predominantly North facing slopes ?

Blastfromthepast, the best resorts will have a mixture. In spring conditions the south facing slopes are skiable earlier, softening in the sun after the overnight freeze.

Don't panic and don't cancel the flights just yet.

The weather is not unusual for the time of year (in France.) Saying that I have also let it worry me just about every year! I have skied every 'Easter Holiday' for the past 11 years - usually for two weeks, only once have the conditions not been very good. It will get warm in March, and it will almost certainly cool down again, and then warm up again. It will almost certainly dump with snow in March and/or April too. I have arrived in Bourg St Maurice with temperatures in the twenties and then I have then been skiing in fresh deep powder in a few days time. I have been enjoying a beer in 21 degrees in St Anton, for it to be a blizzard (in the same place) in 3 days time. The key is to go for high altitude snow-sure resorts with north facing slopes. If you still feel worried then have a look at historical snow-depths on the SCGB website - I had to do this today! I go through this every year, and every year (-1) I have had wonderful off-piste skiing with a combination of corn and powder being usual.

Think you need to get a black lab for your next dog. Longer legs and wont get lost in the powder. No stick from me for you wishing for powder every day. Just means great pistes when I get there in 9 days time. I will also live with it if it snows every night and is sunny every day while we are there Wishful thinking.

High pressure, settled, mild and sunny conditions for the Alps look set for at least the first half of March.

I note your careful use of words nozawaonsen: a suggestion it could well go on longer.
I'm going out next Friday, and (foolishly) think i can influence the Weather Gods.
They are a contrary bunch.
So I'm packing shorts and t-shirts - bound to make it blizzards for the rest of the month

nozawaonsen, hints in GFS of a cooler spell from mid March onwards...Is this what ECM is showing coming in from the east?
|
|
|
|
|
|
kitenski, there are some hints of a change to the settled mild pattern beyond mid month which have been cropping up in a number of recent runs in ECM and GFS, albeit at the edge of the output. It would certainly not be unusual for a spell of mild weather in early spring to be followed by something cooler. At this stage though it's unclear what will happen beyond mid month (not a surprise given the range). That ECM chart looks to me to show colder weather being pushed towards the east rather than being drawn in from the east.

GFS shows a very stable high pressure system over the Alps till about March 20th, then (maybe) some colder air spreading from the North

Feels like a long time, until I remind myself that mid-March is actually only about a week away!
Fingers crossed the following week gets a bit snowier, just in time for my trip on the 22nd March

Spring skiing for me next week then. Reminds me of 2005(?) when we drove from Munich to Grenoble for a wedding in March, so felt it would be rude not to have a week in AdH. Wall-to-wall sunshine all week meant us turning up at the wedding looking like we'd been sunbathing in the Caribbean for a month.
I lurve spring skiing!

I am off to tignes on the 16th March, if the warm weather holds until then my wife and kids will be extremely happy. Good pistes and visibility with some sun is all they require.

There's a kind of "fin de siecle" feel about the recent posts on this thread. Don't forget that there are often very major snowfalls in March - in the northern French Alps some of the biggest dumps of recent years have been in March. It's not over till its over.....

Certainly doesn't look like any of that in the first half of the month, so fingers crossed for early April to deliver as it has every other year

This evening's 18z GFS has a switch to colder (and snowier) weatger in the Alps on 18 March. Too far off to trust, but worth watching to see if this shift strengthens or weakens.

No substantial change this morning. High pressure looks firmly in charge for the first half if the month. So mild and sunny spring weather will dominate. Things look more uncertain as we go into the second half if the month. Colder weather currently appears likely to return around 19 March.

Super ski tour this morning with the dogs and OH, maybe left it a hour or so too late as temps had warmed up far more this morning than the previous couple of mornings, but still classic spring snow.
