Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Don't forget that if the hill is closed the Lecht and Nevis Range are both day triappable from Aviemore and about an hour and an hour and a half away respectively.

And to echo the comments about the A9 being clear, I drove back south this afternoon, and the A9 had no slush or snow whatsoever. It was remarkably easy going. Some mammoth potholes to dodge at Drumochter however!

I'm so glad I took the gamble when my alarm went off this morning. An absolutely amazing day at Glencoe today. Freshies for hours. Painted from head to toe in snow. Wintry whiteness everywhere. Anyone that didn't love it needs to have their pleasure centres examined.

Awesome man. Toofy Grin

Never really give any other resorts a thought, we were just thinking if it was closed in the morning we would hold out until the afternoon. But after having a look I think we might try Nevis range. So thanks for that.

Its 10.50pm and the snow has been relentles since we got here, its never stopped. Still big thick flakes outside. I think they said that the reason for it possibly being closed tomorrow is due to the wind that is forecast (so hopefully not because of the snow).

Looking forward to tomorrow wherever we end up

Conditions look monsta in Scotland, with top-to-bottom riding at Glencoe and Nevis Range.

The backbowls at Nevis will be good when they open up Cool

Here's the latest news from Glencoe:
Quote:
Last Wednesday it started snowing and it's not stopped since.

Overnight last night there was about 18inches of fresh snow.

A huge thanks to all the staff who were on the hill from as early as 4am this morning to make sure that we were able to open.

There was so much snow this morning that the groomer was needed to clear the carpark....

....and so much snow at the top of the access chair that it had to be run in reverse to get the staff up the hill.

I managed to get a couple of hours on the hill today and here's a couple of pictures I took to show how much new snow there is.

Heading up the access chair - where's the river gone

Fence seems to be missing for much of the way up the plateau Poma

Good width on Mugs Alley!!

A small queue for the cliffy

Most people were skiing the mid mountain as the visibility was very poor on the summit.

The great news is that this means that most of the upper mountain hasn't been skied at all yet.

The Spring run and Rannoch Glades were shut today because of poor visibility - when visibility improves they could be awesome.

Drifts around the top of the cliffy

Big drifts around the bottom of the Poma

Skiing to the carpark to finish of a great day

If the wind settles down as expected this week then there could be some great skiing to be had.

There's even a hint in the forecasts of some sun and decent visibility for tomorrow.

Enjoy it if you can.

Was at Nevis today... stopped snowing at 1pm and the sun came out at 2pm there is the most snow that I have seen there all season... Goose is as almost as wide as it was last season, Allt Snechda is complete on both sides of the burn (like last season) and the runs back to the chair and restaurant are full width...

Well Like II we also got to Nevis range. We got there about 11am and conditions were fine at the bottom of the gondola, however, when we reached the summit it was blowing an absolute gale with snow blasting in your face from both the slopes and the sky. You could barely make out where you were skiing as the light was so flat and there were loads of moguls (just made by the volume of snow and traffic that went by). By about half one it had calmed down a bit and the sun even came out for a while which was really lovely. About 3pm the wind picked back up really hard and on the chairlift was quite uncomfortable.

It was really hard going on the legs as the piste basher just couldnt seem to keep up with the moguls that were being made. I found the runs to be a bit narrow too (dont know if this was because the piste basher was only making a path that was the width of the basher) A while ago I asked for an explanation of what "heavy" snow was, today I got my answer. I think there actually might have been too much snow Shocked lol

I have never skiied Scotland before (well nt that I can actually remember). I also found that the pistes were very poorly signposted.

We did have a good day at the end of it, and after all skiing anywhere is a bonus, but would I go back to Nevis? hmmmm, I don't think I would. I am sure everyone has their favourites but I found that for us ( who are novice - intermediates) Nevis Range was not for us. You cant please everyone and I still did have an enjoyable day.

We are going to once again try and get up to Cairngorm tomorrow and I think we may try Glenshee or Glencoe on Wednesday (which one has the widest runs?)

polo99, your comments don't overly surprise me with regards Nevis but sorry it wasn't so good for you.

Cairngorm should be more to your tastes but don't discount The Lecht either (although signposting isn't that great there but it is small so you should be able to find your way round unless there's a pea souper).

Out of Glenshee and Glencoe I think Glenshee might be more to your tastes, Glencoe is great for advanced riders perhaps less so for what you're looking for.

you might not get along with Glencoe if you like wide pistes its a bit intense on the senses if you have poor visability and deep snow and the legs get it big time, what a place Very Happy

polo99, the snow wasn't heavy today. It may have been tracked out but thats what happens when there is a lot... At nevis they don't really do piste poles... you get to the top of the goose t-bar and ski down in the unpisted bowl that is the goose back to the tow or follow either side down the t-bar which they do piste "inside edge" is to the skiers right of the tow and it was 3 bashers wide...

I'm not all that good in poor vis like it was this morning so I stuck to the chair runs until it improved - the fairway was 3 bashers wide up top and 2 wide at the bottom... The wind was reasonably strong but I if your covered you face it was by no means a problem... The chair is the first tow to close in strong winds and it was no were near strong enough for that...

Also the large maps at the top of the chair and outide the restaurant are new for this season to help you find your way around...

I didn't go up the summit tow today as it was always in the cloud... there are some very gentle blue runs up there which in better visablity are great for early intermediates.

thanks for the feedback. I think we will discount glencoe and go straight for glenshee.
I didnt want to start a heated debate of how good nevis was or wasnt. I was simply stating how i "found" it and I am sure that more experienced riders would have had a completely different view. You saw it as being 2 piste bahers wide, but thats not how it seemed to "me", it was so churned up, but as I said, this was volume of snow. It was bleaching down. As for the goose, I wouldnt even have attempted it,

horses for courses. I will let you know how "I found" Cairngorm.

polo99 If you are staying in Aviemore unless you are actually traveling south consider the Lecht as roga suggested as you will have to pass it to go to Glenshee and it is a long drive on roads that may not be in great condition. There is more snow forecast for tomorrow but I hope you manage to enjoy some skiing in at Cairngorm.

Had a good afternoon at Glencoe but a horrible morning Sad

The snow was nice and soft in the afternoon but in the morning the top of the mountain was very badly wind affected, added together with very flat light it was horrific
The afternoon was much better after the top had flattened out a little by the amount of traffic over it.

Dunno why they never ran a piste basher up on the top 200 yards of the main basin? Cos once you got past that the snow was great but the first bit early this morning was horrific

polo99, the summit at Aonach Mor is a wonderful place on a sunny day and skiing off these cornices on these marked runs and down into the bowl below are Nevis Range's main attraction. There are some steeper and narrower 'unmarked' runs higher up the hill Laughing ...

Spent the day at Cairngorm. Got to the gates at 9.15, 2nd in the queue. Gates opened about 10.15, so not too bad. Disappointed but not surprised that the railway was off, with just the Coire Cas and tHe Fiacaill open. Very poor vis in the morning but the snow condition is totally excellent. We stopped for lunch about 1, and came out of the Cas bar hoping for better light, sadly it was snowing and the viz was worse. However, miracle of miracles by the time we got to the top of the Cas T bar the sun was glinting through a gap in the cloud. Thereafter we had a couple of hours of excellent skiing. I love these days, ok really only the cas/gun barrel open, but I had day of my 4 day pass left, in all spent about 30 squid including fuel, for some great fun.

The railway opened about 4, some folks went up but by then the lvis had gone again and my knees had enough unexpected twists and dunce in the morning.

If the sun comes out this week some folks are going to have a very special time.

The west wall and white lady looked fantastic, I assume the east wall will be the same. I might have to sacrifice another days hol before this is gone.
