Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

polo99 I would be very surprised if you had a problem parking mid week outside of the mid term holidays, in the unlikely event they have to use the overflow car park there will be a shuttle bus put on. It is hard to say how busy it will get with the new snow but as the school holidays are finished with mid March would normally be a quiet time. Most of the time once you pass the snow gates at Glenmore the hill road should be fairly clear, relax and enjoy.

Good to hear reports coming in of all the snow - seems to be pretty significant accumulations at all the ski areas and snow looks set to continue for a few days yet.

There's a couple of piccies below from Hilly (Helen) at Cairngorm giving some idea of the freshies as well as the low visibility today (not least because it was snowing so heavily lol).

This one shows freshies between the car park tow and Fiacal Ridge poma:

This one is on the White Lady at the end of the day:

By all accounts the snow was coming down so heavily at times it was fresh tracks every run!

Apparently also "puking down" in Fort Wiliam at the moment which bodes well for both Nevis and Glencoe snowHead

On present charts the snow is set to continue until Tuesday and then possibly start again Thursday Shocked

Tomorrow WH is suggesting ot'll be a whiteout in the west (as in a lorra lorra snow!) and heavy snow in the Northern Cairngorms (so perhaps slightly more visibility there) but very windy west and east. MWIS is suggesting of whiteouts in the east but clearer to the west. GFS suggesting similar as far as I can see - so take yer pick but west might just be the safer option visibility wise!

It is seriously going to be amazing once the skies clear!

Think i'll give it a miss today.

Summary for all mountain areas

A very sharp transition from constant snow and storm force upland winds to mostly dry conditions with fairly light winds will occur near the Great Glen. To the south, many areas will be dry, and from the Southern Uplands southwards, many summits will become clear of cloud.

Headline, The West Highlands

Severe gales & persistent snow northwest.

How Windy?

Northeasterly, 40-50mph, gusts 65 to 80mph near and west of Loch Linnhe & Firth of Lorne all day. The strong winds will slowly extend southeast across region through the day, after starting at around 30mph.

Effect Of Wind?

Considerable buffeting and severe wind chill from low levels upwards, and higher up, any mobility very difficult where exposed.

How Wet?

Intermittent snow, mainly near and west of Loch Linnhe

Patchy light snow most areas, but near and west of Loch Linnhe/Firth of Lorne, and on hills accessible from and north of Glen Spean, snow will fall most or all day, giving whiteout.

Cloud on the hills?

Mostly lifting to higher areas

Near and west of Loch Linnhe and near/north of Glen Spean: widespread cloud all day, base 500 to 750m, rarely higher. Elsewhere, overall widespread cloud, but base will lift to 750 to perhaps locally on western hills 1050m by the afternoon.

Chance of cloud free Munros?

10%

Sunday 13th March: ROAD AND GATES AT GLENMORE CLOSED. PLOUGHS WORKING
There has been constant heavy snow overnight, coupled with strong winds on the mountain.
We have struggled( with the big Thomas plough!) to gain a single track access to the car park, however there is around 30" of snow to clear from the roads and car parks. It is still snowing heavily and we do not forsee having the roads open any time soon. The road from Aviemore to Glenmore is pretty awful and a fallen tree is blocking the uphill lane at Glenmore.

30 INCHES OF SNOW!!! THATS 76CM!!!! Will be epic up there when the conditions improve, forecast is for heavy snow all day aswell, could possibly be 1m of fresh snow up there by tomorrow AM. I so wish i could be up there!!!

I've just got back from 4 months in Verbier and think the best snow to be skied this winter could be in the UK! I live in SW Scotland have a flexible enough job to get away but the forecasts and conditions keep changing so much i cant bloody decide where to go. I was going to go to Aviemore tonight to ski tomorrow but now thinking of holding of till wednesday. Still a 5hr drive from where i am in good conditions so i don't want to arrive to closed lifts.

What are peoples thoughts? Perhaps tomorrow in the Nevis range, tuesday Glencoe then wednesday Aviemore?

Tuesday Glencoe or Nevis could be the choice. I think high winds and more snow are forecast over night tonight. I think i'm going to try and blag Tuesday off work, but with going away to the alps next weekend it's unlikely Sad

twangjack, yeah get those snow tyres back on!

Sounds like there's 'too much' snow at Cairngorm today:
Quote:
Sunday 13th March: 10.10am update. Hill Stormbound for the Day. ROAD AND GATES WILL REMAIN CLOSED AT GLENMORE. Heavy snow showers continue and wind is increasing making it impossible to keep the road open to public traffic. Team will work to prepare hill for opening once storm has passed.

Glencoe is open but some lifts still being dug out:
Quote:
Lifts Operating: 5 of 7 Available Uplifts.
Runs open: Access chair, poma, cliffy and wall t-bar have all been dug out and running. Main Basin T-bar being dug out and will open ASAP. .
Conditions are Brilliant across the mountain.
All lower runs have tons of fresh fallen and wind blown snow, with big drifts everywhere. The Wall, the wall cross over, thrombosis, High Road and Bunny run all have excellent cover on a firm base. Top runs will be assessed and report will follow as soon as we can get up there!!!

Glenshee is open:
Quote:
With the continuing snowfall their is full cover of powder snow over the entire ski area. Great skiing/boarding with large accumulations of powder on the upper slopes. Elsewhere there is a blanket of fresh powder snow on a hard packed frozen base.

Lower lifts at Nevis open:
Quote:
UPPER LIFTS ON HOLD due to high wind speeds will be constantly reviewed. Plenty of areas on the lower slopes for all. Lots of fresh powder and drifts. Come and have fun! Grooming on lower runs for the beginners areas.

The Lecht is open (access roads flagged as open but with all this snow must be pretty dicey at points):
Quote:
Most main runs are complete with good cover of new snow on a firm base.
Ample nursery area .Powder snow on most runs

And there's more snow forecast! snowHead

Which forecast is suggesting that?

From what I can see neither MWIS or GFS ensemble is supporting loads of rain - brief warm up just above freezing then dropping back again with chance of more snow is what I'm seeing the the moment but I could have missed something?
