My rule of thumb would be that it can snow down to 300m below the freezing level. What is more tricky to work out is how quickly the snow line moves down hill as the melting of the snow removes heat from the surrounding atmosphere.

@Rob Mackley, @jonathancarty, this season especially at times there has been absolutely no logic to the PN levels - we don't usually get too many inversions here in Serre Che, but this season there have been a few and that just makes a mockery of predicted levels.
And sometimes you'll get wet snow at +2 other times rain at 0 - for sure you'd usually expect if it's raining on our terrace at 1400 and temps are +3 that at 2,000 it will be snow, but again not the case, though if it is snowing then it's the equivalent of instant cement
So this weekend is gradually shaping up, and could well be another snowmageddon with the start of the holidays.
Models have changed way for the better for down in this part of the world in the past 12hrs so here's hoping that YR is correct, that said Meteociel are showing better volumes

Can anyone explain in layman's terms the likelihood that there'll be some decent snow in Alpes Vaudoises from 16/02? We're staying in Barboleuse for the week so hoping there's enough to keep us entertained

@DomEvans8, I'll try and remember to update as I'm there this weekend. But it looks like sleet turning to snow for before you arrive so should be fine!

It's important not to stick heads in the sand.
Around 1 in 3 lower resorts across NW Europe are now closed, due to lack of snow.
Many resorts are greener than Al Gore's smoothie.
Yet another 3-5 days of rain for lower stations are coming at the backend of this week.

Very little snow on the mountains in NYC or Washington or Liverpool for that matter. Been heading high for 20 years now. Low resorts for on the minute or obviously locals.

@Rob Mackley, Look on the bright side- the temperature accompanying the first wave of precipitation tonight looks to have dropped a couple of degrees.
In the longer term the spread is vast and the average of the ensembles is tending towards the mean which I read as "anything can happen".

But. This week looks good. Pretty much all the gfs runs give a max of 5 degrees during the day with well below at night. Looks like this weekend’s precipitation will definitely fall as snow above 2000m and probably below that too. So we are lucky our half term in best week not the week after. As we are flying tomorrow, looking forward to some skiing in the snow on Friday/Saturday/Sunday.

Any kind of refresh over Sat/Sun/Mon will be welcomed, especially by the half term crowd! Just hoping that we also get a freshen up on the lower slopes below 1700m and not just up high.

Would this weekends snow be of any benefit to us travelling out on the 16th do we think? or are we back to the position we're in now by then? Currently looking like temperatures remaining low but no fresh snow for a few days prior to our arrival

I know a few on here use YR and they really are being very optimistic for down here - whilst others are for ever-changing for the worse each run it seems.
As ever it will be what it will be, but I can't see too much actually ending up laying on the valley floor, but think there will be enough to cause havoc for traffic over the Lautaret at circa 2,000m and Montgenevre at 1850 - they might even close the Lautaret and divert all traffic the long way round.

We're off to Valloire on Saturday, and this is pretty much how I see it - Valloire is at 1430m so I think it'll just get either rain or sleet on Saturday at resort level (which we might be glad of when we drive in!), with maybe a sprinkling of snow on Sunday down to the village if we get lucky. The majority of skiing is above 2000m, where I hope it'll get a decent dumping.

we're staying in Gryon so our pass covers Gryon-villars-les diablerets, believe most skiing is below 2000 unless we head to Glacier 3000 but could be wrong, resort around 1200.

1430 is the exit of the resort on the Galibier road, the resort is 1400m.
You have to get over the Col du Telegraphe first, 1566m.

Les Diablerets tends to hold snow better as it is the shadow of Glacier 3000.
Glacier 3000 has some nice piste, very mellow at the top the a long red and a very steep black to the valley that is rarely open.
Glacier 3000 tends to take a few days to open after fresh snowfall.

In last few weeks I have skiied Splügen and Flims Laax in Eastern Switzerland and Verbier in Western Switzerland. Plenty of snow above 1600m. Spring snow on sunny and lower slopes, hard pack, chalky snow on upper and shaded slopes. Has got more icey this week but there is still plenty of skiing to be had.
This weekends snow will be a nice refresh, likely to be pretty lively avalanche conditions for a couple of days.

Yep totally! It was precisely the Col du Telegraphe I had in mind when I was thinking we might be grateful for the rain as we come into resort. I suspect there won't be any snow below 1800m on Saturday. Happy to be proved wrong and I'll have some chains just in case!

As mentioned before the South East Foehn will keep any major precipitation away from the North Side of the Alpine ridge till Sat night/Sunday . This episode is all about the southern French alps , Maurianne to some extent and up the the south of the Alpine Ridge in Italy , Piedmont and Aosta .
As they say in Haute Tarentaise it won’t snow till theFoehn stops blowing .

Crystal clear views of the mountains this morning, from Salzburg to the Zugspitze. One of those days when you feel as if you can touch the mountains despite them being 50 km away. Mild though not really typical Föhn weather as cloudy here though clear further south so a fairly weak Föhn. Even so it is not going to do the snow in the northern Austrian alps any favours (it was already pretty dodgy). Conditions in Austria do seem to have been better than reports from elsewhere (was in St Anton at the weekend and it was pretty good but not typical for the lower Tirol) but that might not continue to be the case. At one point there was general snow forecast for next week but now it looks like maybe small amounts of sleety stuff.

3V avalanche forecast has repeatedly said low snow levels under 1400m, normal above 1800/2000m and still well in surplus above 2500m

Sleety snow here on the West Lancashire plain 15m above sea level in the shadow of the Parbold massif. Great conditions on the Stubai Glacier last week seem like a distant memory today, oh well countdown to the next fix in just over 4 weeks has already begun.
