Looking at Monterosa - most seem to have it cooling down from Thurs 08 Feb, with it being quite cold from Saturday 10 Feb. And some chance of snow over that weekend. I suspect it is still too long out, but seems to have been quite consistent.

@Pyramus, which models and what part of the world?
GFS 06z for Meribel shows a dip down to seasonal temps by the 2nd Feb but it ramps straight back up and then isn't showing any meaningful cooling until around the 11th Feb!! |
I think Pyramus was focussing on precipitation…..
Safe to say that temp and precipitation seems more unsettled as we move through next week (all models seem to be indicating this)

@dannyboy23, not the one I'm looking at, dry and warm for Meribel, with a brief dip in temps, all runs & GFS, GEM, ICON and ECMWF all in broad agreement!

Hey, yes, from the 9th (the day I travel).
My take was that this is probably at least as much positive than negative…?
Anyway, will continue watching (which won’t in any way impact where and when I’m going away - probably going mad!)

My read is the temp dip is not brief, it definitely trends down strongly.

Are the snow gods teasing us for the 9/10 Feb!?
Would be funny in a way if we have a snowmageddon for the first day of the school holidays!

I hope so, not because I'm skiing over half term, but if it doesnt snow, a combo of hard icy pistes, half term crowds and a higher than average mix of beginners / inexperienced skiers/ boarders will make for a lot of carnage and accidents.

apparently there was something on the news this morning about "no snow in Europe" and a friend is cancelling a trip to Flaine, mostly because a friend is ill, but she also reported that there is "no snow" so she'd not be missing out!
Absolute bonkers, the media love a bad snow story that's completely untrue!

Early sniffs in the models suggesting potential for snow as early as Wednesday 8th now... Fingers firmly crossed.

The picture does seem to be getting a little more positive. We are flying to Milan next Thursday to ski Monterosa, so I have been keeping a close eye on that. The consistency and predictability for it starting to cool down on Wednesday have increased. The weekend then is further out and therefore less certain, but again consistent forecasts of cold and snow. So I feel happy today. Until it all changes!

@Rob Mackley, skied Flaine on Monday - absolutely fine. Gondola down from Morillon 1100 but plenty of snow everywhere else in the area (skied down to Les Carroz on the way back - all good).

It's looking more and more positive (actually negative lol) now. Pretty much every forecast I have looked at has temperatures falling from Thursday with a prolonged cold period and precipitation over next weekend. Forecasts for Milan and Aosta back this up, temperaturs falling and precipitation. The probabilities on Meteoblue have increased, now 90% chance of precipitation on Friday and Saturday for Monterosa. It's still too far out to be sure but it's looking good!

@zikomo, that's what I'm seeing too (for Switzerland). Last couple of days of GFS runs looking good for weekend of 10th and ECM also showing precipitation but not as cold.
Still a while for things to change though

As I read it, at least for NW alps, the majority of the precipitation is arriving whilst the temperatures are above average?

Looking at the wigglies, it’s the same pattern for Aosta and Verbier. Most of the precipitation is arriving on the 9th and 10th when the temps at 1500m are around +5.

I don't get quite the same picture, not least as it is forecast to be well below freezing at night which is easy to forget. Also I don't really mind if it rains below 1500m and snows above 2000m.
Looks to me for Monterosa that precipitation will start on Thursday (8th) night, when the temperature will be -2. Friday (9th) has a high of 3 and a low of -5 at 1700m, Saturday (10) is a bit colder. Looking at the models I can't see it falling as rain at 2000m.
Which wigglies are giving you +5 at 1500m for Aosta valley on 9th and 10th?
