My brain can only cope with one model, but FI looks interesting in GFS, do other models share similar longer term views?

Today's models moved tonight's precipitation further south, which should bring larger snowfall totals to eastern Switzerland and Austria. Definitely an upgrade compared to 24 hours ago, and reflected in current precipitation radar images. Should be some nice surprises by tomorrow morning
The flip side of that is, if the whole pattern has shifted southwards, the upcoming retour d'est for western Italy / southern France may be downgraded further.
Second week of March indeed looks potentially interesting (perhaps especially for NW Alps) but too early to have any certainty. That's when the SSW may begin to affect northern hemisphere weather more generally, but who knows whether it'll have a direct impact on the Alps.

@kitenski, ECM also suggests maybe snow from the 5th onwards but a lot of uncertainty - hence the variety of wiggles on your ensemble. Latest GFS run for St Anton seems to suggest colder but drier than your one. There is a suggestion of fairly general snow centred on Switzerland around 10.03, long way away and will change.

It does look much colder across the alpes over the weekend which should at least provide the opportunity to run the cannons.

@Boarderfarce, not sure many resorts have the water to run cannons...and prob too late in the season to run them?

@Boarderfarce, @kitenski, Doesn’t make financial sense to run them as far as money is concerned the major earning season is coming to a close . Might fire them up on a few high traffic spots but that will be about it .

We still have the fixed position lances in position and I expect they will run overnight tonight and tomorrow at least. Most of the fan guns have been removed so apart from 1 or 2 being placed in poor snow points they won't be used. As @kitenski says there is not a huge amount of water in the reservoirs but given that the coming week is our busiest of the season I'm sure they will do what they can tonight.

North and Central Netherlands holidays, the yellow avalanche is widely reported in the press (because of the number plates). I know it will be busy in Skiwelt particularly Westendorf and Zillertal but probably makes less difference further West in Tirol. I don't know what the effect is in Salzburg.

Interesting! Our local area (Dachstein West) prohibits snow cannons running beyond the end of January. Fortunately, we’re getting a decent dump of snow right now - due to end on Monday evening

I believe Tirol allows a particular number of litres per square metre for the whole season (unless like last time we had a bad time and they said dowhat you need, next day reservoirs were full with water pumped from the village). It has been snowing since the early hours, and is due to continue until Monday evening too, will last much better if they can mix with artificial.

We are off to Madonna di Campiglio on the 8th of March. They have not had snow for a good while now and looks like nothing on the horizon now. We have always been lucky with snow conditions but this year may not be our year! Any hope of the outlook changing?? - I know it is still a bit of a way out but reading from posts above this part of Italy unlikely to get any of the snow coming!!

@Rob Mackley, well we have have trip provisionally booked for Easter. Small deposit paid to hotel and a flexible ferry crossing.
If I don't see an improvement of the snow conditions then we will cancel or go elsewhere.
Sure there are thousands in the same position as us for Easter. I would have thought it makes plenty of sense to run the cannons whenever possible to extend the season as far as practicable.

Now seeing 30cm+ forecast from 5th March - 9th March hereabouts….way too far out to get overly excited. Especially this year where the snow forecasts have been so erratic! And mostly wrong!

Normally I would be fck it, we're going anyway but feeling really itchy about as yet not booked 1st to 8th April trip to Tarentaise. 5 weeks is plenty of time for things to change but something.

@Layne, I’m due in Sainte Foy that week but I’ve gonna be brutally honest snow depths are very poor even at altitude, even with the offering of a cold march the sun packs a punch this time of year and unless there is substantial snowfall some stations are going to find it really difficult to get to the Easter weekend offering anything reasonable to ski . Over half term I popped over to Les Arcs for a day and it was very average and at La Rosiere the snow line was already at the station , that was two weeks ago .

Just got back from 10 days in the 3Vs. I’m not going to lie - we had an ace time … BUT even above Val Thorens, anything south-facing was quite sketchy. There is virtually minimal base depths on most slopes with high traffic areas suffering the most. The ground will now start to warm up so don’t assume that anything that falls now with stick. Base reset numero 3 is just not going to happen.

Calling the end of the season this early is a bit foolish.
We were in Morzine during the red snow Saharan dust storm in mid March last year. Crap conditions and warm weather, season looked done.
Two-three weeks later we were in Tignes at end of March start of April. It was -10C and we had knee to thigh deep powder. The best conditions of the entire season at the start of April.

@NoMapNoCompass, not calling the end of season and certainly not in Tignes but things will be very sketchy in many stations in the West unless there is significant snowfall. Unlike last season when the cold snow in the last week of March , yes I was in Grimnetz and Sainte Foy then , that week it fell onto a base this season that base is significantly thinner and will worsen in the March sunshine . For an example normal depths on north facing slopes in the Haute Tarentaise would now be between 50/100cm at 1500m they are 25cms and on south facing slopes they are 0cms(source French Meteo) it must be remembered that at the end of Feb is when snow depths are at there maximum.

Sorry to seem lazy chaps, forgive me. I had a crap trip to VT in December, had better snow in Scotland. Now looking for somewhere to go in the van in the next few weeks and can't find any decent snow at any resort. What's the general consensus for the situation ATM? Anybody got any decent snow links? Every French resort I've looked at seems a soggy mess.

What have you looked at...
Tignes, Val d'Isere, VT, anywhere high basically are hardly a 'soggy mess'. In fact the issue this season of late has been lack of precipitation rather than high temps. It has been cold, but just no fresh snow recently although some light snow is falling as we speak.

In terms of recent snowfall the Pyrennees have just had a lot and the Southern Piedemont is getting a lot as we speak. However, base was poor in both of those areas previously. Prior to that I think Eastern Austria had the last decent snowfall.
General conditions seem pretty poor everywhere so I would be inclined to make your decision immediately before leaving on basis of whatever happens between now and then and what is predicted to happen then. May not be a bad year to go to somewhere like the Dolomites which is used to operating without natural snow.

Yes but the same thread reports boiler plate lurking under the fresh and the Nordkette having been close a lot recently (not sure if that conditions related)
What I really mean is overall snow depths I think are low across Europe. The fundamentals aren't good.

I have not seen this kind of static presentation of depressions at this time of year. And I have watching for years. Basically, two separate centres of depression formation - one in Med and one in N Atlantic, but no depressiosn forming over Iceland and tracking down to Alps.
https://www.meteox.com/forecastloop.aspx?type=1#
Jetstream not active for days on end over Eastern parts of the UK, and the precise location of the jetsream flows is important for what happens re snowfall in the Alps.

Very static weather systems. Very unusual for Feb-Mar. No significant snow forecast for CH or Austria.
