Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

billb, Some cruisy blues/reds in Samoens, but they do start/end with narrower sections. If the snow allows, you really must try the red and black below 1600 (not open at present), they are tree-lined and usually very quiet and end in Vercland at the "red bubble" old gondola.

Out on the 29th boarding / skiing with a big group of friends. Have been catching up on this thread with interest! Thanks for all the updates etc. Keep them coming!

The apartment is in Samoens, but thats pretty much all i know at the moment. From what i understand, samoens is on the other side of the valley to Flaine?

Any tips on where the best boarding runs are (ie... no hills! haha)

SH4RKY, My tip - get some skis Laughing

Seriously though.... When you get to the top of the Gondola at Samoens... walk straight ahead (don't strap your board on!). From there you should be fine. If you are happy with speed (as there are a couple of "shushes", especially Perce Neige towards Morillon) just make sure you watch those ahead of you for when to get some speed up. The major one to watch out for is the very top of Flaine heading towards the Gers area... some walking for you there!

and welcome to Sh by the way.

handed my hire skis back a couple of hours ago, after what has been a great week- despite the lack of any real snow dumps. It snowed all yesterday afternoon, & the temps are dropping, however. Again, credit is due 2 the Piste groomers 4 an excellent job with what is available 2 them. The sun & cold on most days this week has made many runs hard, so a great opportunity 2 brush up on my slide technique Happy (via SMS)

Very very cold here at the moment, but the snow is looking like it needs topping-up. No off-piste and most of the lower pistes are closed. But what is open is great. Patches of ice in places and sugary in the artificial stuff lower down. All links open. First day here (Les Carroz) and we travelled the whole GM area today, except Flaine - keeping that for tomorrow.

Flan was icy today, but better cover than the lower resorts. Light snow tonight, still falling in Les Carroz. But will be pleasantly surprised if there's more than a centimeter by the morning. Temps set to stay below freezing for days, so no problems for anyone arriving this weekend.

ski club of gb would call it hard and fast. I would not call it icy at all and generally much better than i though it would be, looks like they have been grooming very hard. Timalets was narrow, with race piste on one side. Morillon was fine, sairon was brilliant fun as all cannoned, Lower piste in les carroz shut, combe has big bare patches on lower bit towards gondola, but it was shut most of christmas as all the lower stuff was and off piste left from marvel, past off piste restaurant is now virtually grass! funny was skiing that in boot deep powder a month ago. Chamois red from tete des saix was rather stony, but open, it wasn't at christmas. Most pistes have a good hard base now, just need snow...please!!

Just to confirm whats already been said, we have just arrived back from a week in Morillon. It's the worst conditions i've seen in the last 3 years we have been. But all credit to the snow engineers they have done a first class job. Sunday to Wed was so warm that the afternoons lower down mean't skiing in caster sugar. But come Weds night the temps plummeted the cannons came on and conditions improved dramatically. Then snow on Thurs Aft meant we had a really good last 3 days. Looks like staying V cold so what there is will be well kept. Had some great days on the reds above Samoens 1600. Defo the best snow in that area but very cold as not so much sun. Theres' plenty open except lower down in Carroz and sadly bottom part of the marvel was closed, kids love it. Looks like a snow on Weds/thurs with more cold forecast means anyone going out will be fine. The piste bashers really work so hard, very impressed. When we left on Yest morning car said - 13C and the snow cannons were going full blast. Safe journey to anyone going and enjoy!!!! Smile My attention will now switch to Les Arcs for the end of March Lads holiday Toofy Grin

Pistes much improved today, had an excellent time. Tiny bit of snow last night seem to go a long way. Really cold. Top of tete des saix has quite a few rocks showing. Samoens much busier than les carroz and morillon, didn't make it to flaine.
old pwertrac 4x4 fun, but you do have to work for your turns rather than something more modern, back on slalom atomic sl10 tomorrow.

Wandered over to Flaine today via Vernant lift access. Surprisingly busy but snow was good all over. -8 deg or so and snow cannons dressing some areas. Great day all told.

I had a fun time today, probably because my expectations were quite low Smile

Sairon was quiet but fun and in good condition with a few icy patches at the top in the afternoon.

I meant to go to Flaine today but forgot you had to go up the lift just after that crappy bit so I ended up in Les Carroz again !

My trip didn't get off to a good start. My mate (whose apartment I'm staying in) didn't tell the managing agents I was coming so I couldnt get in!

Try finding a hotel in Samoens after 10 at night. I got lucky with the third hotel I tried but they only gave me 15 minutes to get there.

Thank god for smart phones.

Flaine was busy today, with some surprisingly bad skiers -lots of stopping in the middle of pistes, just over the crest of drops, and sudden unexpected sweeps across the run. The cold kept the snow in reasonable shape: by noon the upper slopes were all great fun - a few stones, but otherwise perfect.

If you're due to arrive in the next week or so, pray for a big dump. Just a couple of days of warm weather could see the end of the existing conditions.

fil, Website currently giving 15cm depth at 1600m which is Forum (your accomodation) level. You'll ski to the door (almost) but snow will be variable in quality. Normally about 60 or 90cm at this time. But a week can make a huge difference.....

We're currently in Les Carroz, there's no off piste but on piste is generally fine if you like 'firm and fast'. Toofy Grin A bit pebbly in places and I'm sure some runs are shut but there's plenty of good skiing, and not many people. Very Happy

Excellent day, went to flaine, conditions are variable. Snow is basically fine, but some runs eg lower faust are a bit slick, but with sharp edges is ok. few warning signs for stones etc. I have seen it a lot worse. They are making lots of snow, gun near vernant chair was going on the way to flaine in morning and on the way back in early afternoon. Flaine was a lot busier than les carroz, and to be honest the snow in les carroz, because of less traffic, was better. DMC seems to be developiing longer queues because of the new seats in it? there is also now an express line to fill the cabins, basically if you are prepared to stand you can jump the queue.

Thanks Carroz, i'm out for a week on Saturday and keeping a close eye on what this low pressure system is doing north of the alps. However, it sounds like as long as the temps stay low, they keep making snow and the piste bashers keep up their excellent effort everything should be fine. Are there cannons on the lower part of Combe in Carroz? They managed to open that run yet? Also, is the Diamant Noir in Flaine ridable? Thanks again.

Although not forecast, this mornings report from les carroz (http://www.skifrance.org/mbl-740018.htm) indicates a couple of inches of fresh snow overnight - this is also evident from the webcams (http://www.lescarroz.com/webcams-les-carroz/m86.aspx). It's not much granted, but a few more like this between now & when we arrive there next Thurs would be most welcome!! Puzzled

Ben E C, Diamant noir is very skiable, in fact has pretty good snow. there are cannons on the part of combe near the gondola, but not higher up near gron chair so its shut still.

Er two inches of snow?? more like 2mm!

However conditions today were a bit warmer, stayed in les carroz all day doing 4 runs effectively, but you don't need much else on slalom skis. Snow was fine, quite sunny all day, tete des saix had cloud around for for a long time in the morning.

Its 8.00pm now, no sign of snow.........

billb, Its not that bad at all, quite a few of the runs have lower sections shut, but it is fine across the front de neige

Piste runs seem more worn today, but still managed to find some fresh (if crusty) Lots of bumps to find if you like that sort of thing. Portet on the way back to les carroz was horrible, stones everywhere.

Then you can post your own questions or snow reports...
mattiwilkin, Tips on Samoens

1) Firstly, a "full area" pass is recommended... but do not assume you should head straight to Flaine. Yes, Flaine is great and adds a lot to the skiing week... but there is some wonderful tree lined skiing around Les Carroz, Morillon and Samoens itself has some good skiing. Depending on conditions (i.e. we need more snow for this to happen) you must try the red and black below Samoens 1600 towards the Vercland "red bubble" lift. As I say, this wont be open unless there is a dumping of snow.

2) Don't panic if you get to the village and there is now snow... the village is often green as it is only at 800m... there will be (even if only the bare essential) snow at 1600m where the Grand Massif Express will drop you off.

3) If you wake up and the cloud is low and murky... it doesn't necessarily mean it will be where you are skiing. The cloud often sits at about 1400-1600m as it builds up the valley and you can pop out of the clouds at the top of the GME and have a lovely sunny day... and speak to people later who "gave it a miss because of the foggy conditions"

4) If eating out... book the night in advance whenever possible... or eat early.

5) Don't order Steak Tartar unless you like it still moo ing Razz

6) Cheap(ish) eatery for lunchtime Mimmy's at Samoens 1600 (the level just a bit higher than the top of the GME - you will know what I mean when you get off the GME.)

7) Don't order large Coke in Flaine unless you are prepared to pay 7 Euros!

Cool Avoid the Morillon 1100 lifts at ski-school start time

9) If you have a good dump of snow... ask for directions to the Gers Bowl (Flaine)

10) Don't go off piste high up in Flaine unless with a guide... if you ever saw it in the summer you would understand!

Hope these random thoughts help - enjoy. snowHead

Don't panic people, I just got back from a week and it was fine. Not the best ever but plenty of decent skiing if you choose your runs (i.e. ignore the icey ones and look around for something better). Lower down seemed to be most consistantly good but it did vary from day to day so until new snow comes you'll have to look around each day to find where's good.

if you want off piste then start praying but apart from that they're doing a great job making the most of the snow they have.

1st morning done, just popped back to the hotel, managed an easy 19 km of skiing this morning.

plenty open, all hard packed, and some very thin patches when back into flaine. Tho its the 1st tinge I've had to ski in the shade to cool down!

Back out for the afternoon staying local still will venture further tomorrow
