Typical. No snow and then high avalanche danger. |
Ground is way to warm, there is going to be alot of Avalanches this season. |
why do you say that? Thinking an icy layer forming near the ground? The ground will cool to around just below zero with a snow pack on it. Would there not be more danger if you've a thin snowpack and very cold temps early season, sets up depth hoar.

Suspect that snow doesn't bond well with the warm ground as depth hoar is also created.
Quote: |
Meteorologists pin the blame on a weak bottom layer of snow. In many parts of the West, the first snowfall came early in the fall, when the ground was still warm. The difference in temperature between the warm ground and cold snow causes the flakes to form large-grained, square or cup-shaped facets, known as depth hoar, which don't bond well.
So instead of a cohesive base, that first snow became a slick, unstable layer prone to cracking under weight, whether from a heavy snowfall, from wind depositing drifts, or from people stepping on unstable terrain. |

As far as I'm aware it means the whole lot comes down right down to the ground/rocks underneath. It means many slopes will have 'bad foundations' and many more avalanches than usual.

DB, last season it was lots of 'snow marbles' that supposedly caused slides due to bad consolidation of snow layers. Think I might stay on the pistes for early season atleast

Any guys on here know how its looking in the Ski Amade area after the recent snow? It's qiute hard to tell on the webcams how much has fallen, but it doesnt look like much more than a light sprinkling. I'm off to Muehlbach am Hochkoenig on the 2nd January, so quite a bit of time to go yet, but it doesnt stop me getting worried
I guess it should be cold enough now to have the snow guns running for atleast a few days, although they didnt seem to be running on the Hochkoenig webcams today.

Markus, had email from friend just as he finished some ski touring at obertauern a few hours ago and said around 20cm fresh and still falling. I've seen snow settling on webcam at 1000m at schladming (hochwurzen). So not too bad, out this weekend so hoping it stays (gets) cold.

as the pic abtly shows:
Does/can this base layer consolidate and improve as the season goes on???
|
|
|
|
|
|
kitenski, i don't think the base layer has gone rotten yet, snow has only just fallen, you need a decent temp gradient from base to surface and time to form depth hoar (marbles). Best thing to do is to read the various austrian state avalanche website reports tomorrow morning. Wasn't that photo above from the states last year?

Same here. The wind last night blew all our rubbish all over the village!!!. But it is not raining here.
Where about are you in Gastein?? What are you doing there?
We often go to the spa baths only about 35 mins away from us. I like the Gastein valley. |
I spend most of the winter here and do as little as possible (apart from skiing).
The valley is very susceptible to the föhn as it's right next to the continental divide and runs north/south.
I've never seen winds like that. They can apparently reach 200 kph. In one of the side valleys there's a 200m wide strip
of fallen trees where a fohn storm ripped through.
It's turned a lot colder now and it snowed down to valley level. The snow cannons are on for the first time on the mountain so there may be something
to ski if the main area opens on schedule on Friday.

djfletcher, We're staying at the Jagdhof Pichl - http://www.jagdhof-pichl.com/urlaub/de/pichl . Do you know where it is? The location information seems to be a bit vague on the website. You were booked up when booked our holiday, which was a shame, since you were pretty much the only place in Muehlbach that had space for 9 people. Hows the snow looking at the minute? Its nice to see that theyve had the cannons running for the last few days!

topjack, keep the reports coming. i plan to be in bad gastein next week at some point... hopefully the predicted snowfall on friday will materialise |
The main area opening has been put back a week until the 12th.
However Sportgastein is opening on the 5th. They've had a lot of snow at the top although still a lot less than in the last couple of years.
Two years ago it opened in early November with 1.5m at the bottom.
Dorfgastein is also due to open on the 5th but only for runs down to the new chairlift.

Been out skiing around schladming today and yesterday. Some fresh snow yesterday and sunny & cool today. Upper piste in great shape but limited to mid station at most locations. There is snow on the ground to the valley but not quite enough to open the home runs. Pretty busy today with some queuing reminds me of french skiing, but with a tad more snow I think more lifts will start to open. DJ David Gueta plays in schladming tonight, not sure who he is but can see the stage from apartment so some free entertainment.
