Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Thanks Mollers, I hope you enjoy.

It is an extremely stressful time; the constant checking of forecasts and webcam, the fear that it will all melt just before arrival, the fear the viz will be shash......

I think I've done some of my best skiing in Val Gardena in December. Plenty snow, blue skies, empty piste.

If it all disappears by Christmas, I'll eat my snood. Razz

Is this the first day the Sella Ronda opens? Looking at the cams it's a bit overcast but the conditions look great and pistes are quiet. A great time to be out there!

The Sella Ronda is open in both directions.
The Super Dolomiti is reporting 170 lifts and 319kms of linked runs open between Arabba, Val di Fassa, selva Gardena and the Alta Badia. The only area yet to open in this sector is the Marmalada which is scheduled by the 22nd December.

Piste depths in Corvara are being reported at an impressive 84cms at 2,200m and 57cms at 1,500m. That is well on the way to the season target depth. Snowmaking progress has reached 69%.

Meanwhile down the road it’s Week 3 at Kronplatz with 109 kms of ski runs and 27 lifts open, 80% of the system. Most of the remaining runs are scheduled to open on the 16th December.

https://www.bergfex.com/kronplatz/webcams/c1395/

The outlook is warming up slowly towards the middle of December but it looks dry after Wednesday which should be good news for the skiing.

Across the whole Dolomiti Superski area there are currently 324 lifts and 869 kms of runs open, 72% of the whole system snowHead

Doesn’t sound as though there are any of us out there yet?

I’ll try to keep the stats above updated as more of the system opens up. They look to be on course for complete opening by Christmas.
The target date for the Great War tour is now Boxing Day.

Looks busy on the webcams today. Is it a public holiday ? I can imagine there might be a few more Austrians and Germans heading south next week chasing the sun and sheltering from the rain?

As long as you’re not planning to ski off piste the Dollies should be a good option this week. It looks as though they are going to be sheltered from most of the rain, poor visibility and high avalanche risk. There should be plenty of skiing available. The longer range forecast is for temps to warm up next weekend but then perhaps cool down a bit later into December. Have fun wherever you end up snowHead

Hi,
I'm in Alba (Val di Fassa) right now and I'm a bit confused by the lift openings posting on the official Superski website: 130 Alba - Col dei Rossi says at the same time that it is open and closed due to strong winds. Anyone know which one is the case? Many thanks Very Happy

The Super Dolomiti is reporting 187 lifts and 396kms of linked runs open between Arabba, Val di Fassa, selva Gardena and the Alta Badia . The Marmalada glacier has also opened. The Sella Ronda is open in both directions. 83% of the runs in those areas combined are now open.

Piste depths in Corvara are being reported as 84cms at 2,200m and 61cms at 1,500m. Snowmaking progress has reached 87% of the whole area and slope preparation is at 72%. Snowcover looks almost assured now for the season.

https://www.bergfex.com/groeden-sankt-ulrich/webcams/c15188/

Meanwhile down the road, it’s Week 4 at Kronplatz and almost the whole system is now open there with 114 kms of ski runs and 29 lifts open. Conditions look perfect.

https://www.bergfex.com/kronplatz/webcams/c14486/

The outlook for the 22nd - 24th looks very unsettled with strong winds at altitude and some snow. After that it looks to settle down and become dry again though temperatures will be on the mild side. The prospects after that look good with more sheltered weather than other parts of the Alps.

Across the whole Dolomiti Superski lift pass area there are currently 361 lifts and 1008 kms of runs open, 80% of the whole system !

The next milestone is the opening of the Great War tour on Boxing Day.

Really excellent conditions in Alta Badia. Saturday was very cold but sunny. We’ve had 3 bluebird days - lunch al fresco this time of the year was such a treat.

Endured the Masarei lift three times - it was unbelievably ok once but otherwise absolutely bone chilling. Costoratta lift and the run back down were an absolute joy. Hadn’t done it before on previous trips for some reason so a lovely discovery.
Edelweiss Valley was fabulous in the mornings. Full sun meant slightly softer afternoon conditions at which point we headed over to Corvara for a bit and then the glorious 9a/11 back.

Have quite enjoyed our stay in San Cassiano, having been based in Corvara twice previously. Hotel ferried us to and from Piz Sorega quite efficiently.
Quite sad to be leaving later today. Think snow is forecast for later in the week. Looking forward to Very Happy returning in Feb Very Happy

Note- Probably best to avoid the VG valley on race week if you like to use the whole of the valley. Since the last time we landed on race week, the carnival has grown out of site. Essentially, the Sasslong track is out of bounds for four days unless you pay an additional 30 Euro spectator fee. Even then, it's almost impossible to ski from Ciampinoi to the St. Christina funicular. On the upside, if you made the effort to get to Seceda, it was very quiet.

It was incredible today. Spring skiing with no one there. Pinted at Boë, lunched at Utia Trieste, snifter at Ciampac, last rights at Panorama. snowHead

Panorama bar rebuild is great but I mourn the death of the outside bar.

Carnt help but notice the storm force winds forecast for Friday afternoon and Saturday morning over the tops in the Alta Badia.
Expect lots of pine needles and fir cones blown onto the pistes and then pisteuers out with leaf blowers !

Kronplatz has significantly lower forecast wind speeds so may be a better option with more sheltered runs and lots of Gondola lifts?

At Kronplatz it’s Week 5 and the whole system is now open with 120 kms of runs and 31 lifts open. It is one of the few ski areas that is now fully open. Conditions look excellent.

https://www.bergfex.com/kronplatz/webcams/c14486/

Across the whole Dolomiti Superski lift pass area there are currently 366 lifts and 1019 kms of runs open, 85% of the whole system.

The next milestone is the opening of the Great War tour on Boxing Day.

The outlook is unsettled over the weekend with very strong winds over the tops. Staying warm after that but dry which should preserve the quality of the snow surface and maintain good visibility for skiing and piste preparation.
