@swskier, That's great!
Hochfügen has been open since 1st Dec. Hochzillertal opened today, including the link. @Oceanic
The snow is great... I have to keep reminding myself that we're still only at the start of December. Hopefully it will stay reasonably cold so that any precipitation falls as snow.

No, incorrect. There's a ticket office (Kassa) at the bottom of the Kaltenbach gondola station. Just buy your Zillertal Superski pass there on your first morning. |
Great to know! It's weird that they don't show that on the pick-up locations on the Zillertal website, I guess it's not updated. Do you know if it's possible to pick up a day before and pay online? I usually prefer to do that in advance |
The pick up locations shown on the website are I believe for automated machines that issue you a liftpass if you have ordered one in advance online. Presumably there isn't one at Kaltenbach and they are only at the locations shown.
As said previously, just buy your ticket on the day at the Kaltenbach gondola station, it's unlikely that any queue will be more than a few minutes maximum.
Edit: Unless you've already bought your skipass online, in which case you will have to go to one of the locations shown on their website?

Nipped out for a long lunch break today (2hrs) and had a quick ski.
Up Horbergbahn, then Tappenalm, 150er Tux, Horbergjoch, Wanglspitz, Mittertrettlift and then back down the Horbergbahn.
Beautiful weather, and this is one of the things I've been looking forward to working in to my working life now that we're living over here.

@JimboS, I work as an accountant for a firm in Jenbach.
Working hours are somewhat flexible, mainly in favour of the employer , but technically my core hours are 9-11 & 1-3 Mon-Thurs and Friday it's just 9-11. So there's an element of making it work with skiing, but obviously only as long as business needs are met.

@swskier, fantastic, good luck with it. We recently retired and had considered retirement in the valley, but Brexit etc put an end to that dream. Maybe it was only ever a dream, however we have spent almost a full year there over the last 20 years.

I haven't bought it yet. Do you know if it's the same price? If so, it definitely makes sense to do it the way you said.

Some ski areas e.g the Dolomiti Superski in Italy offer a small discount if bought online in advance, however I'm unaware of any such discount for the Zillertal liftpass.

@satibr, @Alastair Pink, The Zillertal prices are the same whether bought online or at the ticket office.
If you buy a ticket online you can pick it up at the ticket office. You get an email/QRcode/voucher or something similar to take to the ticket office. I don't know that it would save a lot of time to buy it before you arrive but it's possible if that's what you prefer.
It's also possible to pick up the ticket whenever and they'll programme the card to be valid from whichever day you want it to start. You don't have to pick it up on the same day as you'll use it.

Nasty accident at Mayrhofen this morning, chair on Lärchenwald Express apparently came loose from the rope around tower 5 and crashed into the one behind.
From Kronen Zeitung https://www.krone.at/3189285 (open in Chrome and use translate)
A dramatic accident occurred on Friday morning in a ski area in Schwendau in the Tyrolean Zillertal: a chair on a chairlift suddenly came loose and crashed into a second set. A mother and her eleven-year-old child then fell around ten meters into the depths. The woman was seriously injured in the back and the child escaped with minor injuries.

|

@Chris_n, good start, that chair only opened today.
I was up at Hintertux today, snow was lovely, visibility wasn't. Very flat light. But still, worse ways to spend a bank holiday.

@Chris_n, That's terrible news, will be a hell of a wake up call to the maintenance team and management. It's one of the older lifts that should have been replaced with a covered one by now.

God that’s so awful. Those poor people. The lift behind was empty at least no more people with serious injuries. Its what nightmares are made of.
Yes an old chair we almost never take due to the propensity for long queue times.

It's been snowing for the last couple of days in Hochfügen. On the edge of rain at the car park, so about 1500m.
The snow on and off piste at the moment is great... Let's hope it stays that way!

A trip to Schwaz for black shoes and black trousers (playing in 2 concerts next weekend with a brass band https://www.haus-der-musik-innsbruck.at/veranstaltung/gaudete-freut-euch-23-12-23/) followed by a trip to XXXLutz, meant I only skied in the afternoon today.
Loads of snow up there, particularly from the top of the Horbergbahn and above, so as a result, the pistes were pretty chopped up, but good fun to play around in. Spent our time lapping Schneekar and Unterbergalm, Mrs Swskier was working on some stuff, so I was just keeping an eye on her.
Pit stop in the Unterbergalm for a Spinatknödel which was delicious, and i'm told was "balled up" by the good lady.
Stunning weather, and a beautiful sunset, what's not to love? Back up again for a few hours tomorrow

Changeable forecast for the week ahead. Landing in INN Thursday and really hope it stays clear so I don’t end up in Munich again!! Some heavy snow forecast on the mountain (and rain the valley) keeps moving between Thursday to Friday. Pretty warm again.

@Matrix, changed quite considerably since I looked earlier this morning at Bergfex. Earlier it was saying the snowfall was split across Friday and Saturday, now most of it is showing as Friday. Christmas day and Boxing day looking nice though.
Need to drive to Kals am Großglockner on Friday, in Ost Tirol, and the quickest and shortest route is via the Gerlos Pass, but with the weather forecast, thinking it might be more sensible if we go via the Inntal to Wörgl, then to Kitzbühel and south from there.

An amazing first day (and first time) in Mayrhofen.
A little warm but snow held up well and was perfect on a few slopes in the morning where they had just got the sun and really can’t complain when you get a bluebird 1st day.
Slopes nice and quiet though (for now). We are here until 27th so sure we will see it get a lot busier at the weekend.
Forecast is looking amazing , on bergfex, with 40cm snow Friday (albeit with rain in town - could be a spa and bar day!!).
But on wepowder and snow-forecast = 4cm so no idea what we will actually get??
What forecast do the locals use ??

We look at multiple forecasts... The general consensus is saying lots of snow and high winds on Friday.
Talking to hotels and looking at the ski school bookings it will start getting busier from the 27th.

40cm of snow won't be an issue, the winds are what would most likely stop play, but I don't think they'll be strong enough this Friday. Of course anything can happen with the forecast between now and Friday though!

A quick question on passes. Can I buy an Arena pass only for 5 days or does it after be the Zillertal Super Pass. I believe the latter? I need the super pass but some in my group may not get that far
Thanks

@Gaz_H, It's possible to buy a one day lift pass for one area. All multiple day passes cover the whole Zillertal.

Forecast has changed again, and gone back towards how it looked yesterday morning (on Bergfex).
Currently showing 37cm Friday and 26cm Saturday, at the top of the Mayrhofen area. Freezing level around 1000m so rain down in the valley, but snow in virtually all of the skiable area.
|
|

|
|

@swskier, with high winds. A few times i have experienced the Penken Bahn being closed and they only run the Horbergbahn. Bus back to town runs ok.
I am not sure there are any sheltered areas in the Zillertal when the wind is like it is forecast to be.
