@radar, yep I've noticed the same the last couple of years, seems the greatest secret in Skiing is out... Saalbach is the place to go! Soul House in particular had quite a few British from all nations in there, though heavily outnumbered of course by our Dutch friends!

There certainly were! I was in Saalbach throughout the whole season, and I remember remarking on it several times. I used to be surprised to hear British voices, but they’ve become ubiquitous. It’s still a rare exception to encounter a fellow Snowhead though.

Gosh, that's the week of the WC finals as well. That'll be quite the party!
That'll be our last week in the area of four, though we're staying over the Fieberbrunn/Leogang side. Any tips on what to avoid? Are whole restaurants taken over? We'll be over to see some of the races but otherwise will our side be a bit less hectic? Any intel appreciated!

As for the "more Brits" thing - we are going to Saalbach for the first time this season in January, so maybe we are on the rise. We are nice ones though

@snorks, looks like alternating sun, rain and snow, for the week ahead; also relatively cold temperatures for November. (Touching wood) it looks like ideal weather for forming a base, with a bit of snowmaking thrown in.

@Pejoli, they are, as @tatmanstours, has mentioned they will meet in Saalbach.
For snowboard lessons, https://www.board.at/en/ |
Ok, so one more question lessons-wise : my wife and I will want ski lessons, the three ‘kids’ (all 18+ for the first time!) will take snowboarding. We’re thinking three days of privates for each group.
Now, given my wife may/may not ski due to a dodgy hip (more later), I’d ideally like both ski &snowboard lessons with the same company, to allow a bit of fungibility if we need to move things around (ie switch one ski day to the snowboarders).
All the recommendations so far look good, but seem to cover one or the other - any good ones that will offer both?

@Pejoli, an option could be https://www.easyski.at/en/, they do both and only do private lessons. They are based in Saalbach next door to the Neuhaus hotel.

@Pejoli, Kris Dragoshinov of the Penhab School is the guy you need for snowboarding lessons. Has a very good reputation.
For ski lessons you could worse than hire our Geordie entertainer friend, David Spacey - who is independent but sometimes does work for Penhab.
Alternatively Iavor Vasilew and Georgi Popov are both excellent instructors, who work for Penhab. Also the boss, Reini Woisi.

@MarcFSki, check out Hotel Die Sonne - it has an outdoor jacuzzi that I watched the sun go down in a few evenings in March this year. Also got a good sauna area and indoor swimming pool. There's a free taxi service that will drop you off and collect you from the slopes.
Hotel Kendler has been on our list for a while and looks excellent but have never stayed there.

I drove past Hochalm a couple of days ago, and I don’t know what they’re doing around the bottom of pistes 40 and 50a - a pretty major construction project, maybe a bridge or tunnel to get you across the road from the bottom of piste 40 to the Hochalmbahn lift station. If that’s all it is, it seems an expensive way of facilitating skiers to cross the road. |
it took me until the last day last year to realise all of the pistes are joined up by various tunnels and cut-throughs...S/H is definitely my favourite resort in Europe, pity the accommodation is so flipping £££ now!

Update on the works at the bottom of 40 and the Hochalmbahn, you can now see that they are building a bridge across the road (yippee) so no more tow rope to the Nordbahn (due to be replaced next year), you will then get a choice of going down to the Nrodbahn or the Hochalmbahn |

Whilst based in Hinterglemm they cover the whole area and will arrange an instructor to meet you. I know Reini and his team very well and always stay at his pension and ski with them quite a lot.

I thought this looked a great option.
After a modern or rustic modern hotel that has a wow factor. The Salzburger Hof in Leogang definitely has that.
We’ll be going with friends for their first ski holiday so trying to pick a good base that’s close to ski school meet points, has easy blues, and ideally an easily accessible apres ski bar.

Although I’ve never personally stayed there (it’s next door to my apartments), the location is unbeatable - virtually ski-in ski-out, at the foot of the Kohlmais blue runs, and literally a stone’s throw from the après-ski bars. And I recall ribblevalleyblue saying he’d stayed there, and that the food was the best he’d ever sampled on a skiing holiday.
And a small fortune has been spent on upgrading it in the last year or two
I used to look down from my living room onto its rear lawn; now I have to watch their guests luxuriating in the newly extended outdoor pool.

@MarcFSki, The Kholmains https://www.kohlmais.at/en/ has an excellent location virtually opposite the cable car station and the nursery slope, the apre bars are very close along the same road, but you are far enough away not be disturbed by them. As @tatmanstours, says they have invested heavily in upgrading the hotel.
The apre scene in my opinion is better in Saalbach.
If you wanted a hotel with classic Austrian with modern then the https://www.unterschwarzach.at/en/ in Hinterglem is a good choice you can walk straight onto the slopes the hotel owns the apre bar https://www.der-schwarzacher.at/en/ which is next door the hotel itself has a nice bar too , we haven’t stayed there but have eaten there and it’s very good.

@tatmanstours, @radar,
How is it for beginners getting from Kohlmais Hotel to the ski school meet point? More like first timers actually - they've done the 8 hour course at Snozone.

@MarcFSki, the Kohlmais overlooks one of the nursery areas and accessing the other one is easy using the Kohlmais lift station, take the lift up one floor and walk out the station and the meeting point is there, there is another one up the Bernkogel though for absolute beginners they probably wouldn’t go there on their first day.
The ski schools in Saalbach that do group lessons are Furstauer and Ski Fun.
|
|
|
|
|
|
@MarcFSki, I can’t think of a hotel in Saalbach that is more conveniently located for everything, including the nursery slopes and ski school meeting place.

@MarcFSki, as @tatmantours says, Hotel Kohlmais is highly recommended from myself, only stopped there once which was in Covid year 2021, 2 weeks before Saalbach got shutdown!
I have been a regular to Saalbach for 12 years, but been twice a year 5 or 6 times, my best was one year I went on my own for an 11 day trip and then a 7 day, planned in advance and got a season pass which worked out cheaper, wife was not happy and didn’t allow me to utilise my now free ski pass for another visit!
I have also quite often flown in on the Friday (booked well in advance) to get a full days skiing Saturday and then got a last minute random room in the week leading up to the trip, which has never failed (unfortunately I suspect at the expense of a poor person having left through injury) meaning many times having stopped in 2 hotels for a week trip, giving me more experiences on the rooms on offer.
In all those visits across many hotels and pensions, Kohlmais would be my go to hotel if money allows, the location is superb and the food brilliant.
Hotel Sonne I would rate number 2 from a food and facilities view point, but it is a bit out of the centre, albeit walkable and stayed there a few times.
Hotel Art Kristiania I would stay at before Sonne because of location, food nice, but smaller than Sonne and hasn’t the spa/pool facilities.
Alpinresort in the centre also good, but I think very expensive in comparison to the above, good location in centre, good food, good spa/pool, but not as a good as Kohlmais.

@MarcFSki, we stayed next to the kohlmais last season with a 7 and 9 year old. Ski school meet on first day is a bit of a faff as meet at the bunny slopes by Schattberg lift to sort into groups. A 10-15 min walk with kids. But after the groups are formed, collection and drop off is basically opposite the Kohlmais for the rest of the week.
The snow level is above road level so you cross the road, take the lift up inside the lift station and then walk back out onto the snow about 50m from the meeting point.
I’d rate the location so highly that for the first time ever I rebooked the same holiday for a 2nd consecutive trip (normally love exploring new resorts, but this just worked so well)
|
|
|
|
|
|
@gilo, “we stayed next to the kohlmais last season”
Interesting - my apartments are next to the Kohlmais, and, as far as I’m aware, no one else in the building rents out. Unless you stayed the other side, in the apartments above the Bründl Sports shop?
