Sounds like it shouldn't really be a red, then. Are there others like this that I should be wary of?

@Alastair, if you search You Tube for "Les Arcs Malgovert", there's some footage of people having fun - which goes some way to helping explain it... and yes, they are all "on piste".
The first 400m of Clair Blanc is another Red that isn't - but at least you can look at it from the top and decide to divert around it.
Tuffes is tuff when mogulled, but you can watch people on it from the Arcabulle chair, and there's lots of options off that top station.
Otherwise, I think blacks are serious blacks, naturs are marked, and most other pistes are as they say.

Claire Blanc has a tricky entrance when snow is in sort supply with lots of stones, but you can judge it for yourself from the top. Froide Fontaine, which used to be a red can have some pretty big moguls. Grand Col, the red, has a narrow point after the touching with the back that can get very crowded and a schuss that you have to attack or you end up walking. For some reason this dosn't appear as demanding as it used to be. It may be possible given firm snow to do it standing up. The gulley on Lac can gather a number of bumps, stones and bodies

@johnE,
I've bought myself a traditional French shoe-box in 1800 (Belles Challes) having decided to retire early earlier this year. Nothing grand but having done a couple of seasons (elsewhere) a few years ago during a career break, I've always wanted my own place somewhere out here.
I learnt to ski many years ago in Les Arcs when they were using Ski Evolutif as a teaching method.

@thefatcontroller, Is that via NirvanAlps? I have a discount code for people who rent my place, but I think it's more like 1.5% discount rather than 15%.

@Alastair, Congratulations and welcome to the owners club. Is the Belles Challes the building with the doctor's on the ground floor that snakes its ways up the piste. If it is then we used to walk through it and use its lifts to ease the walk back to 1600 after a night out in 1800. On a clear night this is actaully quite a magical walk.
While trying to locate Belles Challes I stumbled on open street map of Les Arcs. It has some interesting classifications of pistes: easy, intermediate, advanced, expert freeride and extreme. Guess which piste is marked as intermediate?

@johnE, Belles Challes does have the doctor on the ground floor. One of the oldest buildings in 1800 with a bit of refurbishing planned for the next couple of years.
@wills_h, on my list of places to visit but the resort is very quiet at the moment (apart from building works) with nothing much open.
More snow overnight with snow on the ground down to Bourg St Maurice - it is looking quite different from yesterday!

Theoretical question: if you stay in Bourg St Maurice for the season or for a long stay (long enough for the season pass to be best value) what is the best way of skiing other nearby resorts too? I saw that the Espace Killy season pass gives 2 free days during the season at Les Arcs/La Plagne and 2 days at Ste Foy plus reduced day rate for 2 days to €30 per day for La Rosiere/La Thuile
Does anyone know if there are any reciprocal arrangements for neighbouring resorts like that for the Paradiski season pass?
I’m thinking the best way is to get a season pass for Paradiski (assuming you do get the 2 days free per season elsewhere as described above) plus this new Ski Al La Carte pass to cover any extra ski days outside of Paradiski not already included?

I've not joined one of these resort threads before, but going to spend 2 separate weeks staying in Peisey Nancroix this season, after too long away from Les Arcs. Getting excited already, reading this thread. First trip is Jan 6th with family, 2nd is March 10th with a friend from work.
Love the Malgovert run, but it's often not been open when we've been there, so what with that and the difficulty getting to the start of it, haven't skiied it as much as I'd like. It certainly is unique.
When the kids were small their favourite run was Bosses down towards the bottom of the Derby chair. We had to ski it every day on the way back home - it got nicknamed Niagara falls for the steep pitches at the top. 2 seasons ago we came over for a day from La Plagne with same 'kids', and discovered that one of them had always thought that was the run's real name! She's 24 now, and it was her first ever black run...
@thefatcontroller, there will be 7 of us on the Jan trip, for 8 days skiing, all adults, and my poor OH is paying for 6 of them. If you would consider us as candidates for your discount code, it would help his poor wallet somewhat. However, you probably haven't a clue who I am, and I totally understand if you want to give it to a Snowheads Les Arcs regular!

Why not just use Ski a la Carte? It covers Paradiski as well as loads of other areas and you only pay for the days you ski

If you ski a lot it works out more expensive.

Yes, the old drag lift . What I don't get is why they call it Bosses then bash it to temove those very bumps. When mogulled it is a genuine black when bashed I am not so sure. The first black from my neices and others is usually Refuge. I had to escort one of my neices off Bosses when she found the Bosses just too much. One day after it had been bashed and was on the firm side my son decided it it would be a lovely wheeze to ski down it just using ski boots instead of skis. He did it rather well until the flat bit at the end when he needed the skis to just get moving.

@rob@rar, yes, indeed it does cost significantly more on the Ski Al La Carte Pass if going to ski a lot, the season pass is much cheaper!
What have you done in the past when you have your Paradiski season pass and you’ve gone up to Tignes or to the 3V? Just paid for a week’s pass or the day rate as needed?
How many free days does the Paradiski season pass give elsewhere? I have looked online to see what it specifically says about the season pass but I couldn’t find it?

From memory it used to give 6 days: 2 in Espace Killy, 2 in Trois Vallee, 1 in La Rosiere, 1 in St Foy, but I don't think it is so generous now. In previous year's I've either paid the daily rate or the weekly rate for skiing away from Les Arcs. Frustratingly expensive, but I couldn't see a way to do it cheaper.

Last year at tourist rates a Paradiski season pass 'broke even' after, from memory, 26 days skiing. Ski ala Carte needed to be calculated using a spread sheet to take into account the one euro loyalty days, the Saturday discount days, and the joining fee. However, there was also cashflow to be taken into account, as the season pass was paid in full prior to Dec 1st, but ala carte was billed one month in arrears to your credit card - so it could be billed 10 weeks later depending on dates charged to the card and statement pay by dates. Also worth mentioning in passing the OAP rate on ala carte kicks in earlier than the lift co (so my BiL informs me )

Ah, I never knew that, obviously before we first went to Les Arcs. Explains why the run is such a straight line!

@karin, @johnE, there's that extremely narrow, steep drop there we refer to as "Dick's cleft of pleasure" (ahem). I think that's the bit that's marked at the top of the run with its % gradient.
Yer man Richard was filming us mates, on our first ever trip down Bosse: he skied ahead, and stopped just at the lip. "Faster, Faster" he urged us like any good cameraman / director.
The air turned blue as each of us disappeared over the lip and into the moguls with a vague attempt (#fail) to put the brakes on. His accompanying laughter track to the footage gives rise to our nickname for that particular pitch.
b'stard.
