Something of a siege atmosphere in BSM tonight - lots of people with luggage obviously not getting to where they wanted to be, a few tour op reps trying to work out where their stray sheep have gone, every bar and eatery - even those which wouldn't normally be open right now - packed to the gills, and a gymnasium being pressed into action as an emergency shelter. Nothing like as much traffic around as at this time on the equivalent evening last year though - I get the impression that not much is actually getting this far.

@philipb, ugh, grim. There are two McDs at Albertville in case you need to know - one at the Géant shopping centre and the other at the last exit off the roundabout if you head off the dual carriageway following signs for Annecy. I can't imagine anything else will be open and accessible.

Anyone travelling today you have our thoughts
And to think I arrived back home today from bare slopes
Hope you all arrive safe and have a fab week.
Our first trip in 1996 was similar - something like an 11 hour transfer from Lyon to Mottaret, and apparently one of the last buses allowed up the valley. Was a wonderful snow and weather week which has never been replicated so I hope you all have a biblically brilliant holiday.
For what it's worth, try not to get stressed (that's an oxymoron if ever there was one), cuddle up and keep warm and the time will pass.
A poor chap at Innsbruch Airport had what looked like a Heart Attack this morning (hope he's ok if anyone on here knows him) , so grit your teeth, keep the kids warm and supportive of whoever is driving you. Don't let it be worse than it could be. Keep safe all

Took us 6 hours from.Chambery to BSM and that was using some very minor roads. Eventually forced to joined the expressway about 10km before Moutiers, road was slushy up to then but most already had chains on. Chain check on entering Moutier - we have winter tyres but they still wanted confirmation we had chains. Then the fun started: compacted and rutted snow and gentile uphill. Had to drive around a few obstacles and traffic in opposite direction stationary most of the way to Bourg. Eventually got here at 6pm having left Dijon at 8am. Looking forward to the conditions tomorrow just have to decide where.

Good advice from PAM W. We left at 8am because of the weather which helped. Coming back however a different story due to the problems at ADH Snow chains are a must but the problem is people struggle to fit them. I passed loads of people with the instructions out trying to work them out. Thank god for snow tyres!

All the people due to leave today at our hotel have had to pay to stay another night whilst the incoming guests are stuck 15k down the valley. Road from Valmeinier/Valloire down to St Michel still closed.

Departed from grenoble airport at 11am this morning on a coach transfer with Crystal. We are approximately 4km past Albertville with no idea where we are going or emergency plan. Does anybody know when/if the roads up to la plagne might re-open?

Just looked at Brides Les Bains web cam and the town looks completely snowed in! That's at 600 metres.
I don't think anyone is going to arrive into any high resort on Coaches tonight!

Very sorry to hear of all the travails. But the good news is that the snow should be pretty good for you this week. I didn't manage any skiing at all over the week due to a bad knee, so very jealous. I'm driving back from PdS tomorrow , catching the eurotunnel at c. 7pm. Any thoughts on road conditions for the journey back? Once on the motorways are they clear?
Thanks.

Earlier in the evening there was a plan to group all the TO coaches in Moutiers then take them up to resort in a convoy led by the emergency services.

@philipb, point out to her that she will have to get out and wee in a snowdrift at -10°C with the whole traffic queue watching if she drinks it all.
Mind you, by that time she probably won't care.

2063 people - mostly Brits- stranded at Chambery now housed in three emergency accommodation centres in Aix-les-Bains. Oisans returning more or less to normal, only major jam is between Bourg d'Oisans and 2Alpes.

I feel lucky that we are on a Sunday-Sunday transfer and have missed the carnage today. However it does mean we need to leave Tignes for Geneva tomorrow morning. Any advice from those on here on what to expect? We are going to get out earlier than originally planned. I was thinking probably leaving resort around 5:30-6am. Flight is at 12:30....

@Lizzard, yes, she just said maybe those 'she wees" on sale at the Ski Show weren't so funny!
Several cars just turned round and drove the wrong way back up the slip road onto A43, I'd imagine the gendarmes might find that an interesting manoeuvre.

Have heard from my daughter, though find it hard to believe that Grenoble Airport is closing at Midnight, so what happens to all the people there ?
All buses out of Grenoble centre to Airport fully booked till after 11:00 - thank God for my sister in law (ex) who is putting her up for the night and then taking her to the airport tomorrow.
Now only need the other piece of the jigsaw, my mate who is attempting to drive to Grenoble airport tomorrow morning !
Still reckon you might well read that I have to drive down tomorrow...............

@Hyst, we're in a hire-car so I am the transfer It's fully equipped with snow tyres and chains so I don't expect us to have any issues in that aspect, I'm just hoping the roads are clear when we set off and we can make it to Geneva without too much trouble!

I have been reading some rather horrible stories from Chambery area tonight. People being put up in emergency shelter (sports halls) and not getting much help from there tour opp's. It even appears that the reps are very much in the dark too

Yeah, like driving licences are so impractical? Winter drving a simple extension, snow tyres a simple mandatory requirement (as the are on Aoste motorways 15.10-15.4 - not that that seems to work )

@Renry, what do you want their TOs to do? The only thing a rep can do in these circumstances is sympathise and get shouted at.

We've made it to ste foy. Took about three hours from BSM. Usually 30-40 mins I think. The train was the winning choice today. stevomcd was an absolute hero getting us here safe and warm.
Best wishes to all who are still en route.

Same here dry in the valley now but snow just up the hill where the cloud is clagging onto the slopes.
Still not enough snow though, we could do with another 50cm.
